Indiana has fired Tom Crean
I honestly don't know how that same thing hasn't happened to Izzo. He's always halfway on the court barking orders at his players and the refs never do anything about it.

just how bad Crean's conference record was. 71-91 since 2008.
Weren't they on probation/ncaa sanctions when he took over?
But by his third year, IU had some talented (albeit young) players in the rotation. If you excise those first two seasons, his conference record is still a very meh 66-60.

Hope to see Harbaugh support the basketball program more.

This probably should have happened a long time ago. I guess it was fun while it lasted.

Back to living in a van down by the river.

There are some good young coaches out there right now, hope they botch this one.
he's good at musical chairs...
1) please no Brad Stevens
2) am I crazy or is Crean a decent fit at Illinois?
Then Harbaugh would just be shifting his twice-a-year loyalties to another B1G "rival"
Creaned corn canned
Tom, you know what you did!
Tip for any small school looking to interview Crean: Don't make him wait too long in the lobby; the dude will wear out your carpet with all that pacing.
but won't miss his pathetic ass...good riddance
I'll always remember Crean for this

If he was coaching some mid-tier NBA franchise like, say, the Milwaukee Bucks, and was having mediocre seasons, I could see him opting to leave. But he is coaching one of the premiere teams in the league, and he is only a few games out of first place.
Unless he feels his heart truly belongs in college ball, he's not going anywhere. Would be a lateral move for him at best.

It is a step down. Celtics to IU is a step down.
Coaching in the NFL to coaching at Michigan is a step down too. It takes a special person to make that move especially given the handful of NFL franchises that were reportedly interested in Harbaugh at the time.
Plus it took a bit of luck with the timing that the 49ers fired him right when Michigan was looking. If Harbaugh has the 49ers going to the super bowl again he probably doesn't walk away. I doubt the Celtics fire Stevens at the end of the year.
Stevens signed a 6-year contract extension over the summer. The Celtics have improved every year he's been there. Right now they're a borderline title contender, and are much more likely to continue to get better than worse, given how well the franchise is set up. Unlike other organizations (ahem 49ers), the Celtics are all pretty much on the same page at the management level. Oh, and Boston >>> Bloomington. I don't think he even picks up the phone to politely listen when they call.
The Celtics get Brooklyn's No. 1 pick this year, which will have the odds to be the top pick in the lottery.
Since Crean is family to Harbaugh, I am guessing that an extra special ass-whooping will be in store for Indiana this season. Add in the fact that Greg Frey will be amped up as well, this could be an extra extra special ass-whooping.
They could hire a competent coach.
On the other hand, this same AD fired Kevin Wilson and hired Tom Allen as permanent head coach without even inquiring about PJ Fleck.
I just realized that it is almost 15 years to the day that I was first angered by Crean. I picked Marquette to win the tourney that year, and Crean, Dwyane Wade, and company lost to Tulsa in the first round--in the first game that tipped off the 2002 tourney.
I crumpled up my bracket and threw it to the floor in STL; it probably sat there until it was swept into a box and moved to LA last year.
About 15 years from now, he's going to rise up and anger me, but today, I smile.
I will miss his antics, but I won't miss anything else. The guy is a total ass-clown.
Hopefully Indiana goes out and hires someone who is worthy of that program's prestige.
as is his idiot son.
HE RUINED THEIR PROGRAM
Please let them hire Alford, please let them hire Alford....
I want to know if Fred Glass went all Bobby Knight in this meeting.
"I'm just disappointed in the....*kicks credenza*.....FUCKIN' PROGRESS THAT WE MADE!"
Either way, it will be interesting to see which direction they go in next.
I sort of like for our opponents to have crappy coaches. Hope Indiana finds a guy just like Crean to replace him.
$4M buyout - sheesh
I am sure Mark Cuban will pay for that with all of his shark tank profits.
For his family.
Syke!
This is great on multiple levels: 1) he was an asshole and deserves this and 2) it eliminates the awkward situation with Harbaugh. In fact, Jim will probably make it a point to root hard for us whenever we play IU now.
with Indiana and Washington. Thing is, UW is in the red with their budget, not sure they have the space ($$) to hire a big big time coach...like Wichita coach.
adios, asshole
may be my all time favorite moment.
Here's to hoping he runs over Izzo next season.
According to a friend who is a Mizzou alum, he was being considered there. That was a few weeks ago.
Hello Steve Alford. Would be a great fit and honestly should have happened years ago.
Harbaugh and Bo but with Alford and Knight.
We (GT basketball) got a coach fired?!
I honestly thought when he went he would've taken an involuntary Medical Hardship or transferred..
so will Izzo retire and Crean take over at MSU?
I share the general overall view of Crean based on the Meyer incident and his general demeanor. That said, I have hard time taking much pleasure in anyone (or nearly anyone) getting fired. Not criticizing -- I get the dislike he's earned, but also know that losing a position is tough even if it's not a financial issue.

Crean won a Big Ten Title last year. Usually that buys you at least a couple years. This surprises me a bit.
I hope for the IU AD's sake that he has a can't-miss prospect ready to bring in. Many of the IU fans seem to have a pretty short list of coaches they're willing to accept, Firing Crean is easy; hiring somebody that will satisfy the fanbase, not so much.
