OT - Ann Arbor Digital Cable (Comcast) TV Still Out - SIAP

Submitted by A2Fan on

I'm in the Allen School neighborhood & have had no TV access since Wednesday ~ Power came back Saturday afternoon.

The Set Top Box is just blinking like a Christmas tree

Anyone have the particulars as to what the heck is taking so long or any similar experiences?

When that happened to me I swapped boxes with another TV and got the same results.  Turned out the power cable was bad.  I had assumed the ethernet cable in the was was damaged.  My problem occurred after a power outage.  This is probably not your issue since the Comcast guy had never seen this issue before.  Worth a look if you have another cable that fits the power input.

Not in AA, but western Wayne County. It appears there was a utility pole that was snapped, but it didn't have power lines attached, which means the repair is not a priority? That is a guess.

There have been several Xfinity trucks at times by the pole, but nothing appears to be progressing. Of course, no customer rep. is able to give any indication as to a repair date.

Telecommunications outages are definitely not my specialty, but if you can't find anything obviously wrong on your end like a bad cord or faulty receiver or something along these lines (it is entirely possible that fault current from our outage can fry their stuff), then in my experience it goes back to a bad power supply or a bad node in their system, or the service from us to one of those is still out - it seems like it is always one of three or four things. I will defer to any Comcast / telecom people here though.

One thing that I know does happen is that sometimes the power supply or node for a telecom provider will be on the opposite side of a sectionalizing location (like a fuse, for example) from the houses they support.

For example, in my own subdivision and on my own circuit, the Comcast power supply is south of a particular fusing location, whereas my house is north of it. If those fuses open, I stay in lights, but I will lose the Internet and cable after the battery on the supply (2-3 hours) runs out. That happens quite a bit around here.

Hahahahahaha. I love it when Comcast tries to say "oh you lose DirecTV every time it rains" ...I've had both and lost Comcast WAY more frequently than DirecTV. I'm a happy Playstation Vue customer now though :)

What's going on with the modem, is your internet working?  Comcast internet has been up (and never lost power) here on the Old West Side...had it lucky I guess.

I had that happen once, just went to the Comcast store there on industrial and swapped out the box for a new one. It was either the box or power cord that was fried.

You need to cut the cord. I've been cable free except for about a year in 93-94, and for a month sometime in the last 10 years when we had free promotional ATT Uverse cable. Interestingly, when the supervisor from ATT called to tried to talk me into keeping cable, after I gave my arguments, she said, off the record, you really are wise not to keep the cable.

Because I have no cable, I also have no cable bills, and no cable frustration. I went out to a local bar to watch the game vs. Purdue on Friday. Didn't have to go out Sat. or Sun., since the games were on CBS. Cost me all of maybe $15 for lunch and a tip and something to drink. Well worth it. A lot cheaper than cable. CUT THE CORD!!

I doubt you'll be able to get a refund from a company like Comcast for your residential service, but who knows.  I live in BFE, Iowa, and we had a small degradation in our internet access speed on our DSL from the local telco a few years ago.  It lasted for about a week, but it really was no big deal.  When I noticed that the performance was faster than it ever had been, I called the phone company and they said how sorry they were for the inconvenience (it was really minimal) and that there would be no internet access charge for the whole month.  Pretty impressive.  I was only calling to see if they had upgraded our service speed unbeknownst to me.
