M Lax shocks #10 Penn for biggest win in program history

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

A lot of things were happening today all at the same time.

Michigan entered today's game against #10 Penn in the Michigan Stadium opener with an 0-27 record all-time against ranked opponents.

The Michigan Men, while not playing a great schedule, have done what they needed to do. Going 6-1 heading into this big showdown with an Ivy League team at home.

Michigan raced out to a 7-2 lead against the Quakers with the lead being cut to 3 at halftime.

Penn would outshoot Michigan by 15 and would score two goals in the final minute to cut Michigan's lead to one goal, but the Wolverines held on for the 13-12 win.

Brent "The Nose" Noseworthy had his 5th hat trick of the season, along with Ian King who also had a hat trick.

Noseworthy has 25 goals. The B1G season has not even started yet. He will become the single season goal scoring leader (32) very shortly.

Michigan did the following with today's win

  • Beat a ranked team for the first time ever
  • Beat an Ivy League team for the first time ever
  • Clinched a winning season for the first time ever
  • Pushed the win total to 7 wins, which is the most in program history

The Wolverines will play their next game against UMBC, two weeks from today at The Big House.

Fantastic! If they can keep it going it would be awesome if we could get a big crowd at the game before the spring game. Hope this sparks big things for the future!

Ranked opponent thing was a big monkey to get rid of.

Almost did it against Cornell one year and a lot of them have been very ugly losses.

This is a big step. Progress. We're gonna have our first winning season at the very least, too.

Would be nice to parlay this into an upset of OSU and Rutgers to get into the B1G Tournament for the first time ever.

There are six games left and we have a 7-1 record. Winning record has not been clinched.

Monumental win, though. I think the team's known they can hang with the big boys for a while; good to know we can actually beat some, too.

Easily the best win in program history.

Hopefully they use this momentum to cause some talk in the Big Ten, which is stacked this year and could be argued is the best confernce in the country with 5 teams in the top 20.  Michigan being the only team on the outside, but have won the games they should win, MIchigan winning today is obviously an upset.

They have been average this year. They were destroyed by UNC and Hopkins early this season and then have wins against two below average teams and then another loss to Richmond and Towson. They don't have a great record at 2-4 but their SOS according to the computers is high. It should be a good challenge for Michigan and a win would give a lot of confidence going into the big Ten season opener at Maryland. They played Maryland tough last year so that could be a great game.
