USC must be feeling at least a little heat from the NCAA investigation. They they have decided that having agents at their practices might not be such a good idea.

I watched ESPN last night and they had a piece on USC's first practice, in summary, it went like this (obviously these aren't exact quotes, but they are close):
Statement of player A - We have rules now... well, we had rules last year, ... but, this year there are more rules.
Statement of player B - Coaches aren't here to be our friends, they've made that clear... it's different but it will be good for us
And my favorite from player C- Some of the upperclassment last year could get away with anything, it's different now
... disciplinarian. I can't begin to imagine how bad things were under Carroll, if players are complaining about Kiffers.

Shouldn't we be hearing about penalties? Is this all they have to do?

The NCAA hasn't done anything - harsh or lenient - yet.

and leave it at that! That just about sums it up.
I don't think the NCAA will be fooled by this in the least. Whether they really want to penalize a cash cow like USC is another story.
NCAA's cash cow is the NCAA basketball tourney. For example, the entire organization's annual revenues for '09 was $700, according to its annual report-ish type thing

Of that, roughly $600 million is television and marketing rights revenue. $570 million of that was from the contract with CBS for tourney television rights (see page 63 of the above report).
The NCAA may or may not come down hard on USC. However worries about future impact of NCAA's income won't likely factor into the consideration.
I doubt the actual NCAA makes that much from USC. Certainly not enough to allow USC to dictate.
They really are on the cutting edge. Before you know it they'll be installing one of them touch-tone phones in the coach's office.

This actually reminds me of how the MLB (or maybe the NBA?) recently announced that it was enacting a "No firearms, deadly weapons, or explosives" rule in their clubhouses. I guess some people have vastly different conceptions than most of what is acceptable in both society and sports.
According to the crawl on ESPN last night UTEP hired Floyd as their basketball coach and UTEP was assured that Floyd won't be punished in the USC affair.
How can the guy that paid the guy who paid OJ Mayo not get in trouble? That's like me giving you money to give to the hooker. Since I didn't give her the money, even though I got the BJ, I didn't engage in prostitution and since you didn't get a BJ neither did you.

While coaches getting in trouble happens pretty infrequently, it does happen...

So USC has been breaking worse rules for longer but the whole Michigan thing will be open and shut in less than a couple years? What a freaking joke.
They think Lane Kiffin is a disciplarian, that really says a lot about Pete Caroll...
