Wolverines Domestic - like a "Yanks Abroad" article only not USMNT player performance in International Soccer leagues, Wolverines in the NBA. So basically, just a quick little recap of the NBA goings-on regarding former Wolverines for people who don't follow the NBA.

This Week: Sat out this past Wednesday's game due to an ambiguous "personal reasons" description.  That said, he hasn't played in Washington's last four games. The Wizards are surging and Burke currently sits fourth on the PG depth chart behind John Wall, recent arrival of Brandon Jennings and Thomas Satoransky. Burke status was listed as a DNP-C (Coaches Decision) for yesterday's game against Orlando.  Barring injury or dramatic change, Burke is likely done contributing in any manner this season.

This Week:  Nik Stauskas scored a season-high 24 points with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and four 3-pointers in 37 minutes against the Pistons on Saturday. This, obviously, was one of Stauskas' best performances on the season. He's currently enjoying a little additionally time with Gerald Henderson down for injury. That said, Stauskas' quality performance is on the heels of a start Friday that saw him net just five points against the Knicks while backup Justin Anderson grabbed 19. Up and down is pretty much Stauskas' season right now and he's going to need to take advantage of these opportunities if he wants to hold off Anderson.

This Week: THJ scored a career high 36 points in a 135-130 loss to the Cavs on Friday, netting 5 3-pointers along the way. THJ backed it up with a 24 point outing on 9 of 16 (4 3PT) in a one point loss to the Pacers on Sunday, leading all scorers. Two big outings for THJ after being relegated back to the bench with the return of Thabo Sefolosha from injury to the Hawks starting lineup. We'll see how the Hawks look to manage this system as Hardaway has now scored in double-figures for 17 straight games and topped 30 minutes in his last two.

This Week:  GR3 hit the game-winning triple against THJ's Atlanta Hawks on Sunday and finished the game with 11 points, 3 3PTs, 4 RB, 1 S, 1 B and 1 A. Robinson is coming off the bench again after a couple starts while CJ Miles was down for injury. After averaging over 20 minutes in his previous four, Robinson topped 20 on Sunday for the first time in three games.

This Week:  Levert is currently the starting 2 guard for the lowly Nets. Levert's emergence has been one of the few bright spots for the Nets this season and he's been filling the stat sheet up with solid performances in a number of different offensive categories and on defense. Levert started the week with a 13 points, 7 reb and 3 stl effort in a rare Nets win over the Kings and ended his week with a career high 6 assists in a loss to Portland on Saturday.

This Week: At 37 years old Crawford is still hanging on, but his usage for LA (as well as his production) has been pretty up and down.  That said, Crawford had a resurgence on Saturday scoring 25 (10 of 17) in a win over the Bulls.  CP3 was down earlier in the season which saw a nice little run for Crawford, now that Paul is back, Crawford will likely return to his role as a team leader and hopeful fire-starter off the bench.

Sad to see Burke's career trending this way. It's not good. Stauskas is playing on a bad team but he seems to show flashes of putting things together.

Levert could wind up being the best pro on that title run team, which is not something I would have expected. We'll see. THJ is in pole position right now.

The problem I gathered about him was that his shot never developed. Teams will cut you slack if you can score or defend well, but if you are only average at both you are very replaceable.

when Dumars passed up Burke for some dude from Georgia I had never heard of.  KCP has turned out pretty decent. I know it's easy to bag on Dumars, but his draft record for a stretch was really good.

In a 4 year stretch he picked

-Greg Monroe

-Brandon Knight

-Khris Middleton

-Drummond

-KCP.

Now on the other side of things, he stupidly traded Middleton AND Knight for Brandon Jennings. You win some, you lose some.

People always bagged on Dumars because he drafted Darko, even though that was probably the right call at the time. But when he passed on Burke everyone around here freaked out because everyone assumed a short, score first PG with mediocre defense and average athleticism would work in the NBA, for some reason. KCP has been a really nice pickup.

A NPOY with a strong shot and dominant college performances isn't strong enough to outmuscle NBA guards, quick enough to zip by them, and doesn't have enough hops to outjump them. Ah well, we'll always have Kansas and The Steal.

Nearly all of the stars in the NBA today were not hearlded recruits or superstars in the making when they were drafted. A few examples:

  • Russell Westbrook had to beg to get on UCLA, busted his ass, still busts his ass and is a triple-double machine.
  • James Harden was some quirky guy who went to Arizona State, busted his ass and got drafted 3rd. Still busts his ass and is a bonafide MVP candidate
  • Isaiah Thomas is 5'9". Five freaking Nine! He was drafted 60th overall... See above re: work ethic.
  • Stephen Curry. Went to Davidson, busted his ass, but was just a shooter and a compliment to Klay Thompson... His work ethic is legendary and he'll end up as the best 3-pt shooter ever as well as a top two ball handler (Kyrie).
  • Jimmy Butler. A defense-only guy from Marquette, drafted 30th overall is now the team leader for the Bulls.
  • Kawhi Leonard. Another "defense" guy from San Diego State. The leader of the best franchise since the 60s Celtics.

There are many more. THJ and CR3 are doing great and their growth this season is something to be proud of. Both have the skills and the pedigree and it looks like their hard work is beginning to pay off.

Levert is actually the starting 3 for the Nets, but he's playing both the 2 and 3.

Stauskas is the definition of a guy that, for whatever reason, just can't be a starter. His starter/bench splits are amazing. As a starter he shoots like 37% overall and 31% on threes with 46% true shooting. From the bench he shoots 47% overall and 43% on threes with a 64% (!) true shooting.
