Would you want a night game against MSU at the Big House?

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on

Last year Warde Manuel said that we wouldn't have a night game as there wasn't a game big enough to be worthy of it. This year we only really have one big game at home in MSU. I see numerous advantages and disadvantages to putting the game at 7 or 8 pm. For advantages, it helps recruiting and gives the team a boost from the home crowd energy. Throttling State on primetime television would be sweet. On the other hand, it props up a 3-9 program and might lead to more issues with drunk fans but 3:30 games are already dark anyways and the SEC does these games all the time. It seems like something Harbaugh would do IMO. What say you?

After the loss to OSU that season, I stopped playing the "what-if" game.  Losing to OSU meant the playoffs were not happening regardless of the end of the MSU game.  Same with going to the B1G Championship game.

I would still be saying "What-If" had the Iowa game ever happened.  But Wilton Speight never separated his shoulder and the ghost of Lloyd Carr's coaching philosophy never possessed Jim Harbaugh's mind.

It's not bad to play football in cold weather. But it's not great to watch while freezing in cold weather. We already have issues with OSU fans taking over the big house. If more people end up not coming because it's too cold then it will just be embarrasing.

I guess it would be fine. I do think might games should be reserved for, lack of a better word, "non Juggalo" opponents. Nobody needs to see a pan of the crowd and a bunch of neckbeards punching people because MSU is down 20.

No, give them all day to suffer after a defeat. Not going to lie, after this past years game I went on a beer run and saw those Sparty fans crying in the store, and I smiled. Inside and out.

See, if it's a question of if do I personally want an a Michigan vs Michigan State night game, I wouldn't mind it. The big question in general that should be asked however is will fans be able to maintain their all day drinking?

The "drunk fans" argument is lazy. There will be dumb, drunk fans for every game and night game. Does that number go up if MSU is involved in a night game? I would say yes. It shouldn't be the reason to not play them at night.

Many other major programs have primetime night games. If Notre Dame can deal with the security issue with MSU then so can we.

No, I wouldn't want it. Of course, the decision isn't up to me. But from a pure marketing standpoint, you're going to get the crowds for Michigan State and Ohio State for a Day game. Plus, I really do think vandalism and drunkenness would be more of a problem with Michigan State. So I would have a night game with someone else. Wisconsin? (Wisconsin knows how to drink and party, but not as bad with vandalism as MSU.) Nebraska? (Nice crowd.)  Iowa? (also a nice crowd.)  Penn State? (least favorite of options, but still better than MSU.)  A marquee non-conference game? (ND, obv., but also UCLA, Texas, an SEC team, etc.) Not Michigan State. Think there are too many potential problems.

EDIT:  I "almost", for the sake of the whining MSU night game crowd, want for there to be an MSU night game in Ann Arbor. And for bad stuff to happen. Forget about burning couches . . . how about some burning cars and good fights and rocks through windows in the law quad. Which would shut down that nonsense of an MSU night game for good.

Lazy arguments. There are plenty of huge rivalry games that happen at night with the possibility of all of the things you mention happening and guess what? They still have them. And as for whining, you sound more whiny than the people who say have the MSU game at night. You're whining about things that COULD happen instead of things that did happen.

  1. I'm not against night games. Actually, I think we could have a couple a year . . . one non-conference game, and one conference game. I'd prefer that night games be over with by mid. October.
  2. What I don't understand is why it is necessary that a night game be against a marquee opponent. Michigan is ALWAYS going to have a full house against MSU and OSU. That being the case, why not have night games against tier two opponents? That way, all the people who are really hot for a night game can get pumped up to play San Jose State or Northwestern or Illinois or Purdue or Indiana or Rugers or Maryland at NIGHT!!
  3. I can grant that Michigan could theoretically play OSU or MSU or PSU at night. Still think that specifically against MSU, you are more likely to have trouble. Just my opinion. But maybe not. Which is why I said that fine, go ahead and try a night game against the Big 3 from Michigan's perspective, and see how it goes.
  4. Regarding whining, I have no need to whine . . . I like things just the way they are right now. I support Coach Harbaugh. If he doesn't want night games, that's good enough for me. (And if he wanted night games, you can bet we would be having them!)

EDIT:  I do believe that if night games become a regular thing, it will have some kind of impact on tailgating and who goes to the game. More specifically, there has always been a significant group of attendees who make a full day of it, getting up early to drive the van or RV to Ann Arbor from the Detroit metro area, from GR, from Bay City and Saginaw and Kalamazoo and Chicago. Many of these folks would leave at 5 or 6 in the morning, and are home by 10pm. Even with stopping for dinner in town or on the roads. That works well when you are going with a group, and when you have kids. Now, assume the game is over around 11pm. You get to your car by midnight. You're home by 1am? 2am? Later? That just doesn't work. Especially with a cranky wife and wiped out grade school or high school kids. Last year, after the Wisconsin game, the traffic on 94 was backed up pretty much all the way to Kalamazoo. And I was going to Chicago. I am not a blue-haired retiree. Some of you will counter, get a room and stay overnight. The problem is three-fold. First, getting a room means adding a huge chunk of expense which day trippers want to avoid. Second, there isn't the room capacity in Ann Arbor. You can't find rooms now . . . and you want to add demain for maybe 5,000 more rooms? Third, time involved. A full day is one thing. A full weekend? It just isn't worth it, because there are other things to do with life. Night game? Yeah, I'll pass. Let those who want to go, go. I'll DVR the game, start it a half hour to an hour in, shut off my phone, enjoy good food, drink, friends, hi-def TV, no commercials be done watching about the same time the game is over in real time, and be home and in bed within a half hour.

I would love to have a night game at the Big House vs. Sparty.

This whole 'too drunk' thing by the Athletic Dept. is weak sauce. SEC does it all the time. We need a big stage, big atmosphere. It should be rowdy, it should be tense and it should be a prime time beat down. Ain't nothing wrong with that.

I get OSU stays where it's at becuase of tradition and weather. But in October, the hell with it. The idea AA lacks the resources or man power for an event at this time slot is absurd. Just gotta have the want to.

It would be a huge stage for recruiting and of course, VICTORY.

What will they burn if they can't find their couches?

The degree of unruliness may not approach that of the fans of tOSU, but I wouldn't want that fanbase running around campus at night.  I still remember when the Friday before the big game many male students stood guard on the buildings all night to prevent mottos and epithets in green spray paint.

I'm ok with attending a night game against Florida at Michigan Stadium then the next year attending a night game at The Swamp.  Instead i have to fly to Dallas to watch my sisters favorite team get thier ass kicked again.

Can you imagine the personal property damages? Can you imagine how the country would look at this like Staee is a team worthy of a night game. No, Notre Dame was one thing and I suppose ofwe had another team of their caliber like in the olden days that is. Very few teams should get that honor and Staee is not one of them. I would be ok with USC, Texas, Alabama teams of that caliber. Staee does not fit the mold.

playing a night game at Michigan is some kind of sacred honor or something. Everyone has night games. They are not special. They are just a game of football played in the dark with lights turned on.

We should be playing 2-3 of them a year, if nothing more than for the fact that it gives more people an oppurtunity to tune in and watch our team crush somebody, and it drives business to local bars and restaurants all day and night.

I know, tradition, blah blah. neg away.

People love to beat up the "tradition" straw man, but there are practical reasons why some fans (particularly those who have to drive in from long distances) do not want night games.  I'm fortunate enough to live close to campus so they aren't an issue to me, but I can understand why someone who has to drive 3-4 hours to A2 might not want one.

It's interesting how the cretinous toothless redneck fans of LSU or Clemson can manage the horrific, insuperable obstacles inherent in attending night games several times a year while the intelligent, educated, and highly successful fans of the Leaders and Best are unable to get past those same sort of barriers even once.

A night game with MSU would be sweet....talk about a nice, rowdy environment for a huge rivalry game. If I were a student, that would a highlight of my college career.
