OT: Amazing Australian Tennis Finals - Venus vs. Serena and Federer vs. Nadal

Submitted by BoFan on

It's amazing all four of these champions are in this year's final.  These players should have peaked 8 years ago which is the last time they all played in a Grand Slam final at Wimbledon.

i actually know a few of the posters and a number of 'lurkers' and they are good folks. i would be interested in meeting any number of you all in general. i have a feeling that even the overly abrasive ones aren't so bad in real life.

incidentally, i didn't neg you and i'd be curious who did and why.  another mgoblog mystery.

It's crazy how they can keep up this level of play.  Everyone keeps waiting for the changing of the guard and the vets keep hanging around.

I'd love to see Fed get one more but I don't think he quite has the legs at his point in his career to survive two full weeks in a Grand Slam.  He tends to wear down in the last couple of rounds.  OTOH, I thought Nadal's body was pretty much broken  down by now, too.

For both of the finals. I will make sure to set my alarm at 5 to watch the latter half of both matches.

It's been a very wild tournament. The top two guys were swept away very early in the tournament.

Yeah, Andy's loss was annoying because I like him, but Novak is kind of a dickhead and I was happy to see his ass get bounced early. I loved that for so long he could not win Roland-Garros, but he finally got it last year...the bastard.

Dickhead, but he's completely different than he was five years ago. His interviews after losing have been nothing but complete class and he doesn't whine at all about things.

Back then yeah, but I don't see that out of him anymore.

I think this is awesome, but is it getting to a point where we should wonder if they're doing it clean?  To be world-class in your mid-30s is nuts.  (In Nadal's case he's not quite that old, but he's pretty much wrecked his body in past years.)

Federer is so smooth and looks so effortless that he can probably play until he's 40. Nadal on the other hand looked like he could break down too young with his style of play. If anything I'm surprised they don't have arthritis or carpal tunnel from the repetitive motion of flipping back their hair or pulling wedgies

I am upset to have missed the two men's semifinal matches. I forgot to record Roger's match. I actually did record Rafael's match, but forgot to turn my iPhone on do not disturb mode. My ESPN alert popped on my screen when it was sitting on my desk and naturally I looked at it, only to see that Rafael won. Both semifinals went five sets...very upset I missed them. I will certainly be watching the final, though.

that we have had this topic open for almost 2 hours and we haven't had somebody say WEIRD THAT THEY HAVE TWO MENS FINALS THIS YEAR, or something along those lines.  I never understood the hate a lot of folks have for the Williams sisters.  They seem like a great american success story, and also seem pretty darn likeable to me.

Way to go mgoblog community, I guess?

I'm pulling for Venus and Nadal. Both of those would be great comeback stories. Serena has owned her sister since the early years. And Nadal's body has been a disaster the last few years. Federer has all his records already.
