Final 2016 Polls & Ratings (AP #10, Coaches #10)
I saw the final AP poll posted earlier, but I thought some would be interested in seeing all the final advanced stat ratings as well. The advanced stats were much higher on Michigan than the final polls.
S&P+ and ESPN FPI rated our bowl performance as our worst performance of the season which is a big contrast from how Michigan finished in the bowl last year.

They won and we lost. Happens all the time in human polls.

all that much where you finish, but when you realize that Michigan beat two other Top 10 teams, including the Big Ten champion handily and lost to another in double OT on the road inspite of horrid officiating, and then loses in the final two minutes by a point in one of the nation's biggest NY6 bowl games, while the two teams rated ahead of them played lesser ranked programs in what are exhibition matches, and Penn State blew a 2 TD lead in losing to USC in the fourth quarter, you got to question the criteria for the final judgment.
The fact that Penn State and Wisconsin were both rated lower than Michigan entering bowl season was because they both lost to Michigan. And in Wisconsin's case, it also to Ohio State at home and to Penn State after squandering a 21 point lead in the Big Ten championship game, so how does beating the MAC champion in the Cotton Bowl make their season more impressive at season's end than Michigan?
I am not really hurt by any of this because in the end Michigan while having a good season, certainly didn't reach any of its goals, and finished probably where it should if you are going to place that much weight on an exhibition matchup as the final barometer of seasonal success.

Advanced stats don't factor injuries in. Losing Peppers for the game makes the Orange Bowl harder to evaluate.
But also need to take into account that some of the advanced stats did not see the bowl as a close one-point loss. S&P+ had the adjusted scoring margin as a 12-point loss with Michigan only having a win expectancy of 6%. Iowa was a an adjusted scoring margin of a 3-point loss with an win expectancy of 33%.

Is it good or bad that the team performed like a top 4 team this year and finsihed ranked #10 ? Was it just bad luck ? Or does the team lack some intangible ? I lean towards luck personally.

FSU got manhandled by us too. They did not look good except for a couple of Cook breakaway runs. Good defenses do that to you.

Team still had too much Hoke in them.
Even though we had the leads at the end of every game we lost. It just never felt like we we're quite out of the woods.
And naturally, some stupid fuck up happens causing us to lose.
I feel like this will go away once more Harbaugh players come up within the team.

I'm surprised that Foggy U isn't ranked for next year. I've been following Latest Crystal Balls on 247 and they are quietly putting together a good class for next year. Solomon, etc.

If the polls reflect the "Always Be Closing" or "What Have You Done for Me Lately?" impact, then I suspect that Michigan's losing three of four games to end the season doesn't look very good to the people who vote in the polls, even though the Orange Bowl loss could be attributed in significant part to losing Jabrill Peppers for the enitre game (on very short notice) and Jake Butt for the entire second half due to serious injury.
The three Big Ten teams ranked above Michigan won 11 games apiece and closed better than the Wolverines. Penn State won nine straight after getting trounced in The Big House and before they lost to USC 52-49 in the Rose Bowl. Ohio State won five straight before getting crushed by Clemson 31-0 in the CFB semifinals. Wisconsin won six straight before losing 38-31 to Penn State in the Big Ten championship game and then beating Western Michigan 24-16 in the Cotton Bowl.

It all makes sense. USC though, not so sure. I know they finished on a 9 game win streak, but #3 feels high to me. Sucks that if UM won, they could have taken that #3 spot.

It's all about finishing games. Of JH's 6 losses at UM, the only beatdown was OSU yr 1. Otherwise, all losses were within 1 score, competing the whole way.
I feel like another 1-2 years and the team will be finishing games, mainly by upgrading from poor-to-average O-line play to great O-line play.

sounds like we are agreeing here? helpful additional info, and with close games, that happens sometimes. I do think the OL solves that, helps hold on to wins by moving the sticks.
