REPORT/RUMORS: Harbaugh Telling Recruits Pep Hamilton Is Joining Staff (per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport)

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

The other Pep Hamilton thread is off the front page and this is a newer development that sounds like "it's happening."

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport Harbaugh's been telling recruits that Pep Hamilton is joining the staff.

Note on #Browns AHC-offense Pep Hamilton: #Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has been telling recruits for a few days that he’s joining the staff.

On a scale of 1/10, how do we view this (rumored) hire?

Anyone with NFL experience and Andrew Luck on the resume can't be too bad, but I'm curious to see how the board experts see this...

...I'm not sold as an OC, I would've said 7-7.5 out of 10.

But as a Passing Game Coordinator/QB coach/WR coach? Home run hire. 9-9.5 out of 10.

Great experience, NFL pedigree, solid recruiter...plus he brings results and a familiarity with Harbaugh's coaching. Sounds like a seemless transition.

I was just getting ready to compare his experience to Jedd Fisch's so folks could compare.

Clearly The Harbs is big on collaboration, he and his staff has said so much. As an Offensive Collaborator this looks like a fantastic hire, as well as the effect on ancillary duties. The QB University distinction may have faded, (and may return) however if U-M becomes Coach U, I doubt anyone will be upset!

Is this one that will stick or will he be gone next year? I like the fact our coaches are really good, but few of them seem loyal other than Matty, Drevno, and Harbaugh himself. I guess it comes with the territory, but hard to have a cohesive unit when there is a new coach or 3 every year. Hard for recruiting when kids like a guy, then he leaves

Harbaugh is hiring assistants that want to move up in the coaching ranks. He's happy when they do, as he should be. He's giving them reason not to leave for lateral jobs. That's loyalty in the coaching profession.

Hoke had a very cohesive unit. The only guy who ever got a better offer still left. That's not what you want. You want a mix of older coaches that are likely to retire here like Mattison and Brown and younger guys who will get promoted soon, either here or somewhere else. Then replace them with more really good coaches.

What you want is continuity at the top. That's important.

Don't know if this is a politically correct thing to say, but I coach high school football and have found that inner city kids relate and form better relationships with Black American male coaches when choosing a school. So from a recruiting aspect this has to be a home run hire especially with his NFL experience. I honestly don't know how well he can coach though.

It can be touchy...but in this case, it shouldn't be (IMO). This isn't like the guy who was arguing that it would be wrong for Oregon to fire Taggart and hire Chip Kelly because Taggart is black...no - it's wrong, because he just got the damn job, I don't care what color his skin is. Wasn't the exact argument, but close enough.

As far as what you're saying, it's absolutely true in a lot of (probably most) cases. As long as we don't act like ALL black kids prefer to be recruited by black men - I don't see the issue with anything you said.

Sure that will help. Just like his NFL experience will help in a lot of (probably most) cases.

Just like it's not bad to say/agree that Tony Tuioti helped with Polynesian and Hawaiian kids.

When Harbaugh first assembled his staff, it was orginally a concerned of mine to be honest - then he got Greg Jackson as Tyrone Wheatley was the only African-American on his staff at the time.

I personally, would love to have a multi-racial and multi-cultural staff and have coaches that can relate to every kid Michigan chooses to recruit as far as race/culture goes.

But if not, it's no big deal - kids relate on many other things as well.

I'll say this too, I also like that he's younger. We have an older staff and I think it's important to have some young coaches because some kids relate to younger, energetic coaches who watch what they watch and listen to what they listen to...other kids like being coached by guys with a lifetime of experience.

We're a pretty mixed bag - that's a good thing, IMO.

Race always is a touchy subject, always has been - always will be.

Maybe not to you and me (I personally thing it was 100% okay and can't imagine why someone would be offended - other than the fact that I've been on this earth long enough to know that anyone can get offended by anything and when it comes to race there's someone will always be offended).

But I agree, truth is better. Go Blue to you as well - it's a beautiful day.

Well, We Are Back, I'm glad you clarified that you were speaking of the American and male variety of black American football coaches.

I was going to suggest we look at some of those black Ugandan female American football coaches, along with the famous black English hermaphrodite American football coaches, not to mention the talented trans-gendered Tuvaluan black American football coaches association members who could quadruple dip in the recruiting resume department with their street cred as black, Polynesian, male AND female people.

However you've made me realize that in the age of Trump we should probably limit the search to the strictly male and American type of black coaches for both maximum relatability and acceptability. Thank you.

Apart from the unnecessary inclusion of "inner city," there's truth to your point. It's mostly human nature for people to feel a common connection and closeness to other people to whom they can relate, with race being one of those factors. Historically, big-time schools often had a black coach on the staff for that sole purpose. Bigger pictuee, given the dearth of black coaches in the college and pro ranks, Harbaugh's coaching tree has always been fascinating. Last I counted, there are 7 black head coaches at the FBS level, and 3 coached under Harbaugh at some point. Wheatley is poised to join that number at some point. Even before he returned to Michigan, I had long admired his willingness to hire black coaches and put them in position to move up the ranks.

In a general sense I agree with you. But I wouldn't go too far with that concept. I don't call it  a homerun because I don't even know the guy. Just being black doesn't mean you relate.

At the end of the day it is about coaching and I want the best coach, no question about it. However I can tell you I was asked in early December if Harbaugh had brought in any black QBs. At that point the thought never crossed my mind. The answer was no and while I don't make anything of it you can be that someone out there has.

Hiring a black coach, when there are so few black head coaches, is a big deal. Recruits and their parents do take note.

I'm so tired of political correctness even being a consideration. While it may not be the case in every recruitment, being able to speak with a coach you believe truly understands your circumstances is certainly important to many athletes and parents. One of the recruits' mothers, I can't remember which, said exactly this in an interview, when talking about Gwen and Harbaugh.
