Sam Webb NON-NAJEE Updates from AAA Practices via WTKA

Submitted by ColeIsCorky on

Sam actually touches on this whole Alabama flight saga if you care to listen to it, but there's nothing real positive or negative that really needs to be added to the discussion. If you care to hear about it, listen to the podcast. We will know where Najee goes on Monday.

On to the other stuff.

Chuck Filiaga - Prepare for a Hello post. Nothing much on performance, but it doesn't sound like much has changed as far as expectations.

Donovan Peoples-Jones/Tarik Black - Tarik Black is "the revelation" to Sam. Tarik Black is now right there with Nico Collins in Sam's opinion (which Sam is very bullish on Nico). He's been the "big play threat" so far, more so than DPJ. Sounds like we should expect a rankings bump, which I believe he's already a composite Top 150. DPJ is still DPJ, but it sounds like Tarik is performing swimmingly.

Ambry Thomas - Going to really be a factor in Michigan's secondary as a Freshman.

Deron Irving-Bey - Looks like he's going to start on the DL for the East team. Not refined with technique so much, but he's really fast off the edge and in that fashion has been turning heads.

Jay Tufele - "Unblockable." Not very big, but "they can't get their hands on him." Don't believe things are trending well for him, but he's still one of Michigan's top targets. I haven't heard about Michigan being completely out of it for him, so there's still at least some hope there.

Aubrey Solomon - While some of you are writing him off and/or don't want to hear his name again after the drama the other day, it sounds like the staff has been pursuing him even harder now. Sam isn't saying Michigan will get him, but mentioned the word "weird" in regards to his recruitment. Michigan not completely out of the picture, and it's hard to tell if maybe this piece of drama between him and Michigan actually helped Michigan's chances? Who knows. If you don't want to hear more about him, just ignore this section. Either way keep your expectations low for your sanity.

This is perphaps the strangest/most dramatic non-Signing Day recruiting season I've ever followed, and it looks like these last four weeks will continue in that trend.

We have a killer class so far, so no matter what happens between Najee, Tufele and Solomon (and others of course), we are still going to end up with a top 5 class. DIB and Tarik Black are two that I would expect to see a rankings bump so far based off this new information.

Back to work. Hope this helps start off your weekend in a positive direction. Have a good day, ladies and gents.

Link to podcast. Sam starts talking about half-way in.

The Fan in Fargo

Worked with a guy from Oklahoma and he asked me what kind of Coke I want. I told him regular and I hate diet. He didn't know what the hell to think of that. Coke can mean a Mountain Dew, Sunkist or any kind of pop. Soda would mean baking soda to me growing up. Now I understand regions of the country. Oh and in Phoenix the only place you can find Mountain Dew is grocery stores. No restaurants or gas stations have it. That was so weird to me because the one million people that live in the states of SD and ND are addicted to The Dew. You guys do know what Mountain Dew is over there in MI don't you?

For better or worse (probably worse other than the entertainment aspect), I think this is only the start of it for years to come. Between social media, high production commit videos, more and more recruiting services and blogs, flight trackers, etc. it's only gonna get weirder and weirder.

These soap opera recruitments are being fueled by the recruiting site hype, social media, intense high-stakes competition among the programs, and inflated expectations.  The Malik McDowell, Aubrey Solomon, and Najee Harris sagas are just a taste of what we're going to keep seeing.  sigh.

Its my fault.  Back when Lloyd was putting together the Drew Henson class, I didn't realize how good it was until after they all signed and I read they were regarded as the best class in the nation.  After that, I became interested in the names of the top HS kids and where they were expected to go to college and hoped Michigan reeled in more than the turds in Columbus. I blame myself really.

Having him in the fold would be great.

I still think Najee is going to end up in Tuscaloosa.  I will be pleasantly surprised if he books the flight to DTW.  Don't want to get my hopes up.

Solomon...hmmmm...sounds like Harbaugh & Co. could be doing some work there.  We could certainly use him.

still on the board IMO.  We simply have to get a large, talented OT that appears ready to contibute early.  We already have some high upside project guys lilke Ulizio, Steuber and Honigford in the fold.  We need more early impact guys and Filaga fits the mold.

And still had to come back and read through this.  I keep telling myself that if the season hadn't ended on such a down note, I wouldn't be getting this caught up in recruiting, but who am I kidding?

Can't wait until September. All these big names who we know are gonna be good, and then the ones we can't predict. Nobody expected Evans to hit the ground running (pun intended). Metellus was basically the lowest rated guy in the class and he wound up starting in the bowl game. I can't believe I actually enjoy the anticipation and recruiting process again.
