The details of the incident are stunning: while on vacation, he was racing his young son to the car (who among us with kids hasn't done that?) when he tripped, fell, and hit his head. He slipped into a coma and died. After growing up in inner-city Baltimore and then playing the most physically punishing team sport at the highest levels of competition for 11 years of his life, that was how he met his maker. Heartbreaking.

Upon retiring from the NFL, he apparently founded a non-profit organization that helped under-privileged families find stable housing. Tragic loss. RIP.

Wow. That is terribly unlucky. I bet things like this happen every day though. Like maybe someone has died from bumping their head while getting into a car.

but I believe Benazir Bhutto, who was shot during her assassination attempt, actually died because her security tried to force her into the motorcade vehicle so quickly that she hit her head on the way in. Died from blunt force trauma.

when I feel like someone should start a trend of everyone wearing a helmet (at least a bike helmet) at all times.    Ugh.

Next on the list, full body armor anytime I step outside my house.   But I'd need more than one color to keep it fresh.  And I'd probably keep getting arrested for looking like i was up to something.

These stories never surprise me because, as a cop, I've seen first hand that life and death can be very arbitrary. The experience has taught to me the great lesson of appreciating each day.

I remember when I was a kid, my dad was a chaperone on a field trip for my little brother. after the first trip, they had time on the playground and my dad was just playing tag with the kids.

one wrong step, he fell and broke his leg. I always thought that was a freak accident, one we could tease him about for years. but, I cannot imagine the horror if he had died from that fall.

prayers for his children, that's rough.

It sounds as though he made significant contributions to the world after football. What a terrible loss! This bothers me more than the loss of drug addicted or alcoholic celebs who are celebrated in the media throughout the year.

Another freak accident that I saw was Anton Yelchin, a 27 yr old actor (played Chekhov in the recent Star Trek movies, was killed in his driveway. He stepped out of his car and it somehow moved and pinned him against a pillar. WTF?

In that specific case, I believe he was driving a car that was under recall because people kept getting confused if it was in Park or not because it had a really funky gear shifter.  So there is a lot of speculation that he got out of the car when it wasn't in Park, thinking that it was.  Which, when you are on a hill, is obviously not a good idea.

So the car probably did NOT roll while in Park.  He probably accidently didn't put it in Park because of the car's funky setup.

A guy I worked with had a friend who was walking along a wooded path in the city with his wife, when a tree fell and took him out. Think about those odds. I find it easier to believe that that's not simply a freak, random event.
