OT: Random M Alum/Fan Encounters

Submitted by Lan Jiao on
Had an interesting and unexpected M encounter on Monday. Was on The Great Wall in windy, 35-degree weather with only a scattering of fellow morons to be seen. I'd just about reached the day's objective; a guard tower at the crest of a hill with a steep series of treacherously-narrow steps leading to it....and dude pops out of the tower with that ubiquitous maize 'M' on his forehead. I ripped open my ski jacket to show him the same 'M' on my chest, and we shared a few stories, Goldfish crackers (should have been cereal), and a 'Go Blue!' before receiving the 'LezzzzgoI'mCold' look from our wives. What's your best/most random/most fun M meetup/encounter? Cheers from The Orient. Eggs Benny are on the menu for the OB if you're in Guangzhou Saturday morning. Go Blue.

Met a fellow Econ grad while drunk in Istanbul. Then I remembered that he was my traveling buddy, we had flown there together, and had been drinking side by side all night.

Floating on a life raft, hoping for a sign of civilization, when all of a sudden pirates scooped my up out of the ocean. I though all was lost until I saw a big Michigan emblem on the captain's peg leg. We shared stories over a few pints of lager and he brought me back to the states.

*As this post is being read, the contestant confidently looks down with a slight smile off to the side and bobs his head, already sure of the response to exclaim momentarily, and earn that true Daily Double of $6000 to get back in the game... *as the reading stops "What is..a run on sentence Alex!!" Alex: You've got it! One category to go...under a minute to go.

Always cool when that happens. I get excited seeing the block M in a different state, let alone the other side of the globe.

I took my wife to the Halsey concert at the Masonic Temple in July and not only ran into a random Michigan fan, but one that, thanks to a DM or two that I found out about later, knew exactly who I was. THAT was strange. Don't get me wrong, I was amused to no end, but it was strange.

Summer 1971, and I'm at the Hadley Landing Site, trying to get the damn Lunar Rover to start. Sonofabitch if I don't see two Michigan alums there.  One pretty close, and the other one pretty far away - but certainly the closest person around for miles and miles.

I yelled out "Go Blue" and no answer.

I yelled out "GO BLUE" again, and no answer.

Then I realized there was no atmosphere, so I flipped on my intercom system - they answered then.

Hiking Waimea canyon 9 years ago. I saw a family and the dad was wearing a Michigan hat. I said "Go Blue!" And they all just laughed nervously. It was actually really awkward. Took my kids to Disney this year and while at Animal Kingdom I was wearing a block M hat, and a little girl, maybe four or five years old, comes up to me and says "go bwue!" I turned around and her dad was standing right there, also wearing an M hat. We laughed and I shook his hand and exchanged a go blue. It was probably one of the most adorable things I've ever seen. (The kid, not the dad)

I ran into Elvis Grbac's sister in Myrtle beach, what seems like forever ago. She ran up on me and told me her brother played for Michigan, I didn't believe her but, she ran and got pictures to prove it to me.

I was at a beer tasting event because I am classy and shit. Anyways I got a ton of free samples because of my Michigan hat. Literally no one else at the tasting got one free sample. At least that is what I was told.

Seriously though I have had numerous encounters in New York, Chicago , DC with fans just walking down the street. I know strong alumni bases in all big cities but always a nice moment.

last year in Virginia, saw a guy with a JalenChrisRayJimmyJuwan shirt on, I had a shirt I got off mgostore on and go figure we are both on here. Unfortunately I moved a week later out of VA or I would've been set for a play date friend. I actually met another dad on her their in the past to. Nothing topped Santa Cruz beach, had my Michigan shirt on and a guy walking by starting singing hail to the victors loudly on the boardwalk.

I've been to about ~47 countries and I've counted about 4-5 where I did not see at least one person wearing something Michigan.

Random alum/player encounter I do enjoy telling:

I fly to/from Seattle about every 2-3 weeks for work, and I've accrued enough status that I get upgrades from time to time. When you're on the upgrade list, you can see how many open seats there are and a list of names and their order.

So this summer, I was #2 for an upgrade and there was only 1 seat open and the name in front of me was JON/D (they don't liste entire names). JON/D got the upgrade, and I didn't and as I boarded the flight to get into my coach seat, I saw thast JON/D was actually Dhani Jones.

Go Blue... but seriously, I really wanted that legroom  Dhani!
