I've spoken with a few members on that team or freshman at TC that year.

Basically what I've come up with is about 15% is true, 30% is Disney dramatized, 60% is completely made up.

Everyone I've spoken with says Boone was a "grinch." They also say Yost had more to do with bringing the team together than Boone did. Yost was the the coach all of the players liked black or white.

The assistant coach wasn't racist and never quit.

Just about all of the characters were all made up in terms of personality. The trip to Gettysburg is made up, but they did have a fall camp off campus.

Disney basically took a real story and rewrote it.

The move is "inspired" by a true story. It's definitely not based on a true story.

Interesting factoid. Coach Boone's younger daughter was a principal at an Ypsilanti middle school for a while. She is now the superintendent at Plymouth Canton community schools. Maybe most people don't care but I think it's cool to have a local connection to such a classic sports movie.

I was reading up on that team not too long ago, because my uncle played for the team they beat in the state title. It's always interesting to look at the back stories, where everyone ended up, and separating fact from fiction in based on a true story stories. There were a lot of things online that painted the coach in less than a favorable light.

I have coached against TC Williams HS for the past 7 years and it makes me sad to see the football team become a shade of its former self. Storied program with great facilities but tons of problems within the athletic department. Can't hold on to good coaches.

Boone is a good man and he will have plenty of good advice for these young men in how to deal with adversity with integrity and class.
