OT: Resetting cells to younger states
This is very cool!!
http://www.sciencealert.com/cellular-reprogramming-has-been-used-to-rev…
In short, the article discusses results of experiments (on mice) demonstrating that cells can be "rejuvenated" to younger states of themselves. And, thus reverse the effects of aging on the whole organism.
Very cool in general, but also, I'm wondering if this may have implications for getting additional years of eligibllity for this (and future) year's seniors (and/or previous graduates). And, how it may effect Tom Brady's attempt to compete in the NFL at a high level well into his 40's.
/s (mostly, but very cool stuff nonetheless)

I'm pretty sure this article will never be linked on RCMB or 11W. Unless they're making fun of us.

Their loss.
Each of us will be poking fun at them for 150+ years and each of them will be limited to "normal" human life spans for mocking us.
We win!

But then again, who does?

Am I the only one that read the title and thought this was about cell phones in Hawaii and Alaska?
December 16th, 2016 at 2:20 PM ^
was that they were building jails in Alaska and transferring prisoners there.

No one lives forever, no one. But with advances in modern science and my high level income, it's not crazy to think I can live to be 245, maybe 300. Heck, I just read in the newspaper that they put a pig heart in some guy from Russia. Do you know what that means?

I don't know how you highlight your text. Do you do that so people see your post?
December 16th, 2016 at 11:16 AM ^
I didn't try to do it, I just copied/pasted from a website, as my stenographer is on her lunch break...

A neurosurgeon in Italy is about to perform the world's first human head transplant.
So in the future, you'll simply be able to transplant your head onto a younger body and extend your life indefinitely.

Can my new body have a six-pack? Because even when I was young and exercising constantly and athletic, I've never managed to have a six-pack. But come to think of it, my head would look HILARIOUS on a body with a six-pack.
December 16th, 2016 at 2:34 PM ^
You want a six-pack? It just takes some work but once you get a routine down it gets easy.
Get up early each morning, get some good workout gear on, (personally I like the new ones with wicking ability when you get the sweat really going).
Then go (I like to jog when possible as it increases the cardio quicker), and head to your local package store and get a six-pack. They should have several varieties to chose from, just try some and find your favorite. That's all there is to it and you're very welcome. It can also work with kegs and cases too if you pick the right package store.

I wish humans lived longer. I'm 35 now and it's just sad to think that I will be watching only 50ish (if I'm lucky) more Michigan seasons.
December 16th, 2016 at 11:20 AM ^
Just think how bad it was a few centuries ago. I used to say to my students, "OK, so why do you think you only need to be 35 years old to be POTUS? Doesn't that seem young? Well, it's because EVERYONE DIED AT 40 BACK THEN! Or why do you think Ben Franklin's dad had 18 kids? BECAUSE EVERYONE DIED IN CHILD BIRTH BACK THEN!"

I've always wondered why we humans need to go to all the trouble of brushing/flossing our teeth to maintain good tooth/gum health as we age (and other mammals don't).
I've concluded that we aren't supposed to be living as long as we are. If we die at 40, teeth brushing/flossing would be moot.
December 16th, 2016 at 11:49 AM ^
Honestly, I think I read about this once and they think it has to do with our evoultionary process. A few million years back, our teeth were much sturdier, and good for rippin' and tearin'. Now they're more cosmetic and far less sturdy...

Yup, this, it's because we eat shit. But, can you blame us, it tastes so good.

I feel like this would have been a GREAT premise for a Michael Crichton novel.

My favorite was Sphere. I think I stopped reading MC right around Timeline, but loved Congo, Jurassic Park, Sphere, Airframe, Andromeda Strain.

This has been discussed for some time and the ramifications are pretty significant. There are a lot of people in their later years doing everything they can to extend their lives long enough to "catch the wave" of reversing cellular/DNA aging. A successful and highly available version of this medicinal breakthrough have some serious consequences with regards to world population and resource availability.
December 16th, 2016 at 11:26 AM ^
I did, in fact, "catch the wave" and am actually over 150 years old as we speak. And you know what? You little bastards wouldnt sit down back in 1880 at games either.

One should never be seated while watching Horace Prettyman on the gridiron.

Also, what affect would it have in the brain? If I "reset" my neurons do I lose memory? Experience?
Going through Jr High and HS again with a new body and my current knowledge would be a blast.
Just being 16 again would suck.

This is very interesting. I wonder, with improved organ health, the ramifications this could have on any illness. Something like cancer. It's too bad there won't be any human trials for so long when I'm sure there are thousands of people willing to try the chemical treatments.

Can we reset Isaiah Wilson's cells to a state/time when he would pick M?
Too soon? Too late?
