OT: Would you EVER work at OSU?

Submitted by david from wyoming on

In a heart beat, yes I would. Welcome to academia. I applied to work with Lonnie Thompson as a phd student and would have jumped at that chance. If I'm offered a post-doc with the ecology department at Ohio State (since they do work at the UM Biological station) I would jump at that too. I've applied for grants with OSU faculty, I've talked to them at conferences and asked their advice, I drank with them and when to lunch together...in general I have no issues at all.

Oh wait, I guess I'm not as much as a fan because I'm not a fanatic.

I don't normally promote prejudice, racism, or hatred toward any group of people, but I, honestly, I'm not doing it here either.

Neg away...

you'd get to rock Michigan gear around a bunch of douchey OSU fans all day every day, and (hopefully) get reasonably-priced tickets to The Game every other year

One of the better pieces of advice that I got while as undergrad was that if I were ever to be in the position of negotiating for a faculty position, it's totally okay to include season tickets as part of your asking price. This prof got 50 yard line tickets as part of his offer just for asking.

At OSU? I wonder how many years ago that was. The director of their new biomed research institute came to our campus, and I was giving him a hard time about taking the job. He's not from the Midwest, and not a big football fan at all, but he still asked about season tickets as part of his package just for the hell of it. This is a fairly prestigious guy who is making something around a quarter-mil a year already.

OSU told him that they couldn't do tickets, but they offered an additional $10,000 a year instead.

Let's do the reverse. Mr Schembechler, would you ever work at Michigan?

That worked out ok.

I'd work at OSU, I have lots of family in the area. My wife won't leave SoCal though, so not unless I want to live alone.

I'd work for tOSU and make Cooper's record against Michigan look impressive. I'll shoot for one loss seasons every year, giving Michigan a huse boost in the polls after utterly crushing previousily unbeaten tOSU.

After tOSU canned me, I could move to some non-BCS school and rebuild my coaching career.

And the amount of threads on this subject could spawn a new blog itself.

What next? "Would you eat a bologna sandwich at OSU?"

I'm reminded of the story, though, of Woody Hayes being in Michigan on a recruiting trip and almost running out of gas because he wouldn't stop to do it in Michigan. Great story.

Not only would I take it, though, but I'd go undercover. Michigan fans are always whining about Tressel's cheatin' ways--you can rock OSU gear, sneak inside their "fort"--and get the inside scoop.

Then you can reveal all and be a hero.

to admit that when my girlfriend and I got engaged our senior year, I made it clear that she had to remove OSU from her list of potential medical schools since there was no way I was going to live in Columbus. Besides, she was almost certainly going to get in at Indiana (in-stater). So that's not so bad, right?
Fortunately she did get into IU (and never applied to OSU).
Of course, now I'm a grad student and program director at Notre Dame, which probably makes me a big hypocrite.

but like my gsi that was an osu undergrad, you're a douchebag if you go to Michigan and ohio state. Go apply to any other school and if you don't go in check out Wayne State.....Especially don't go bragging about how much you want to go there on a Michigan blog and cry about me "judging" you.

Their money is green...But then again, so are the stink waves rolling through the streets of Columbus.
Congrats on the job, or good luck, if you haven't gotten it yet...My reading comprehension sucks right now.

I would. But I would consider subterfuge and espionage as part of my responsibilities. Booby trap the practice field, install covert cams in the strategy meetings, etc. I think I could salve my conscience.

I couldn't do it. I have to drive through Ohio to get home to Michigan a few times a year. We always gas up and eat in Kentucky before we cross into Cincy. I don't want to give any money to that god forsaken state. There are only two exceptions to that rule. Cedar Point and King's Island, Roller Coasters trump my burning hate for Ohio.

Absolutely. You could tell all the students:

OSU administrators understand the Michigan Difference. That is why they hired a Michigan grad to teach you. OSU administrators could have hired an OSU grad for this position, but the reality is that a Michigan grads is more qualified. Michigan produces the leaders and the best. No matter what happens on the football field, you will always be OSU and we will always be Michigan. GO BLUE!

The FIRST job is at OSu--a future job, with them giving you a sterling reference--is in Ann Arbor--sooooo I think it's a no-brainer.

but going to FSU for a doctorate did not keep me from cheering lustily for Florida in the '97 UF-FSU football game in hopes of clearing FSU from out of the way between UM and #1.

It's only a job. I suppose the big question is, will you spend your football Saturdays in Columbus or Ann Arbor? After all, Columbus is a heck of a lot closer than Wyoming. Will you have to give up sporting UM gear at work?

OSU isn't a prestigious school, but it's not a shitty one either. It's at least equal to, and probably better than, MSU academically. So yes.

I am only 22 but I would like to end up as a college professor some day. The benefits of working at a public school are pretty sweet (health insurance, retirement, etc). My preference would be to teach at UofM actually (I love the Civil Engineering Department there) but OSU would not be that bad a job either. I think when you get into the academic wing of a school you'll find more friendly smack talk. I took a few classes at LSU once and one of my teachers was an 8 year OSU student (undergrad all the way through PhD). Our trash talking was friendly for the most part.

I know a guy who's an exec at a large construction company that does a lot of work for U of M. He's also a Sparty.

I asked him once if he was ever conflicted about doing these big projects for Michigan. He got this big shit-eating grin on his face and said, "What, are you nuts?"

Money talks.

Well, assuming I had the skills, if I could get a job where I could drain their athletic departments funds, do a series of untraceable transfers ending with it all in my offshore account, and escape to a non-extradition country ...

... maybe.

I *will not* judge another Michigan fan for thinking and feeling differently, but I would only work at OSU after falling under a circumstantial cage of great life difficulty. I wouldn't mind collaborating with physicians or P.I.'s there, but I wouldn't want to walk those streets daily.

But g'damn: The daily received aggression--an admittedly presumptuous consequence of refusing to suppress my school pride--would be my undoing. I suppose I rank 'relaxed environment' pretty highly when it comes to the subjects of home and work. I don't think that's too crazy.

Nor is the alternative.

It's just not for me.
