Week 12: Best thing you saw...

Submitted by mi93 on

Well, that was fun.  As painful as it might have been for 45 minutes, I'll take a comfortable 4Q (because crazy awesome defense) win to head to the Game 10-1.

Lots of things to qualify for this week's best thing.  OK found another fraud.  Colorado too - and in the process further validated our Wolverines.  MSU fought OSU to the bitter end.

Now for the best in my eyes....

Wazzu v Colorado was a great game - but appreciate those of you with only 1 TV might not have seen much of this one.

Each week I've strived to find the non-UM highligt but for this week I'll offer JOK for 30 yards on 3rd down to set up Deveon for the lead was the best thing I saw.  In desperate need of a statement in an otherwise tight offensive performance this was the key to 14 points and some critiical breathing room.

Beat Ohio. eom

ok, not eom OT...I was at a wine tasting tonight so be nice too me RE: grammar and spelling.  :)

This story actually is on my list as well, and really only because it is evidence that it is indeed never too late to live out a dream. I was actually shocked that this didn't make the board as a thread by itself as we're normally good about finding the little-known gems in the world of NCAA athletics as well as the head-scratchers.

Ha! Funny and yet as a nearly 45 year old great for him. How about we celebrate eternal youth, this fine young man, and a love for this magnificent game.

Just seeing such a snowy game at Michigan Stadium has been a lifelong dream. It looks so picturesque with the lights beaming down and it's just so rare for there to be snow with home games only extending until November. Wish I could've gone, but definitely am looking forward to experiencing a snowy Big House in the future

I go back a ways with Michigan football, and I've never seen it snow at the Big House like that. It was like you put the whole stadium in a huge snow globe.  We sit in the south endzone and you could barely make out the other end of the stadium.  The players celebrating after the game by diving across the snowy field was priceless.

Best Things...

D. Smith being THE Senior on Senior Day.

James Connor setting the new ACC all-time TD mark after battling back from cancer.

Wisconsin, Penn St. & Colorado continuing to make our resumé look better than advertised.

Brian Kelly continuing to implode.

Mork unnecessarily going for 2 with almost 5 minutes left in the game to basically punctuate their shit show of a season whilst keeping the Mystique of "The Game" in tact.

WMU staying unbeaten while hosting CGD and setting up a pretty big showdown with Toledo for a spot at a NY6 berth.

Chattanooga hanging around with Bama for 3 quarters showing they are capable of the uninspired half/game, just like anyone else.

Snow Angels.

Oh... And J OK. I know he didn't get a lot of love on this board today, and for the first half, probably rightfully so... But for your first start with the program, coming off a big upset, and having the pressure of keeping a potential championship season in tact... He didn't make any devastating mistakes, took care of the ball, did improve as the game wore on, produced the play that probably changed the game for good, and came up with a HUGE 3rd down conversion with the defense bringing heavy pressure. That's actually an area where Speight, and the team as a whole has struggled to close out games, leaving it up to the defense. Obviously Speight is still the much better option for all ultimate goals, and here's to hoping he gets well soon... But I think Mr. O'Korn showed he is capable of improvement and if it becomes necessary, maybe another full week of first team reps and opening the playbook more will give him a chance to play well in CBus.

O'Korn executing perfectly Harbaugh's brilliant strategy of having him play as if he was awful in order to inspire over-confidence in OSU. It must've been hard for John to intentionally hold back like that, but I'm sure he just focused on all the fun he's going to have next Saturday, when he comes out of seemingly nowhere to start dropping bombs on the Buckeyes.

something magical about the first snow of the year. For myself and many others, this magic was compounded by the fact that it was our last game in the Big House as undergrads. The last four years have held many memories in that stadium, both wonderful and dreadful; but, this game felt like a pretty great ending.

scoring defense (120 pts. in 11 games - 10.9; #2 is Alabama at 11.4 and #3 (tie) OSU and Florida at 13 per game); and

overall defense (246 yds per game, #2 Alabama is 253, #3 OSU 280, #4 Florida 282).

Looks like scoring offense slipped from #6 44.5 to #11 42.3; not a big surprise there.

The 55 year old man playing for SC State is the best thing I saw this week. ND losing again is a close second. The heavy snowfall at the end of Michigan's win comes in third for me. I love snow football.

Tell you what the worst thing I saw was:
Rutgers has played 8 conference games and has been shut out in half of them and only scored 7 in two more. And they were shut out through 3 quarters in those games. That's 32 quarters of conference play and they have been shut out in 22 of them. But yeah, so glad to have that New York Market...

XtraMelanin (aka Quiverfull) and his son, at their huge tailgate party in the shadow of The Big House. (But, more accurately, not "things" but people.).

My only regret was that I didn't have more time to spend there, as it was already about 2:30 when I found them and stopped by for a short visit. Every bit as friendly and welcoming as I thought he'd be!

and i was thinking the exact same thing re: robf is every bit as cool in person as he is on here, and what a champ to take time from his tailgate gig to hunt us down.   very fun, and thank you for doing so.   was hoping some others, maybe smash, might stop by too.

as to the game, the easy best things i saw were:

1.  the third quarter

2.  the snow.  i love snow and i missed it when i lived in socal.   not only that, it didn't even mess with the 200+ mile drive home.  it was a bit dicey up north, but that is what old 4wd trucks are for, and not much traffic so it was no big deal.

But it was my pleasure to meet you and your son, and now that I know where to find your tailgate, well, FREE FOOD and DRINKS! (Kidding, of course)

I had the same good fortune with my drive home to SW Michigan, as the snow stopped about the time I pulled out of AAGO after doing a short post-game tailgate, complete with another round of bratwurst. Only caught a light flurry or two of lake-effect snow the last 20 miles.

managed the game beautifully in awful conditions. No turnovers. Dominating defense. Snow angels. People having fun in the snow. Great game. Fifteen play nine minute drive in bad weather conditions. Good stuff. 10 and 1. What a team!!!!!!

run with a longer touchdown run, trucking an IU player on the way, then continually putting his man stamp on senior day after that with another big TD run, and some mega effort first down runs.  The cheerleaders doing snow angels in the 4th quarter, followed by several members of the team doing snow angels after the team became 10 & 1, reminding some of us while they are great young men, they are also college students.  The whole team celebration after the game and the sportsmanship between the two teams after a hard fought game in amazingy tough, but beautiful conditions.

Well, after that game if we win at OSU, Deveon should be able to get 1000 yards, he only has 250 to go (so if we win at OSU, he would have at least 2 more games and possibly 3 more).  Should also have 4 backs over 500...

By the way, if we beat OSU and lose to Wisconsin, would both Michigan/Wisc. get in.. or is Michigan out then

A win. Not the prettiest, but it's a win. Our schedule and wins look pretty good right now with wins over numbers 7/8/10. Osu's schedule is also looking strong with wins over numbers 7/9/18. This is going to be the biggest version of the game since the year that Bo died and I like our chances if Speight is back and our defense tackles.

I've never seen a game with snow like that. It was incredible. The players sliding around and making snow angels at the end just capped it off. The crowd was amazing too. It was so cold I expected people to leave but they really kicked it into high gear in the second half.

I'm really glad this was the game I decided to go to this year (even if I did way over pay for the tickets)

We were ALL wondering the same thing in Section 17. We saw McDoom make a great special teams play right in front of us to prevent a ball from going into the endzone, but I don't recall seeing him out there on offense, at all. Maybe he was, and I totally missed it, but he certainly didn't get a single one of his standard jet sweep carries.

Unless Harbaugh was trying to make Urbie forget all about McDoom on offense?  ;-)

You Only Live Twice

As the clock ticked on, I think it was around 8 minutes when O'Korn led the team to a crucial first down and you could see the realization start to take hold that it was extremely unlikely for IU to be able to score twice from that moment on.  The snow angels and belly slides started well  before the game was over - such joy in that stadium, a feeling I will never forget.

and the best thing I HEARD was Carl Grapentine, "....and the ball is marked... somewhere near the middle of the field."

Michigan Seniors undefeated in Big House. Every Michigan was trying to focus on the game at hand. Beat Indiana. 8-0 in the Big House and close out the year with those conditions. True testament to the team. Happy for the Seniors. Beat Ohio State. Michigan can win on Special teams.
