Report that NFL will try, and fail, to get Harbaugh soon

Submitted by crg on

Per Freeman at B/R:

"I keep hearing several teams are going to make the Michigan coach mega-offers. He won't take them. Harbaugh isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I don't care if he's offered a trillion dollars, a starship and a Cuban cigar. Harbaugh. Is. Not. Leaving.

That won't stop teams from trying."

Good to see that at least some NFL reporters are seeing what is obvious to us.

Good for Jim. Sounds like he will always be the highest paid coach in college...as every time this happens he will get another raise and stay at THE greatest university and football program of all time!

He wants to be paid, and Michigan is making sure the money is not an issue, but that's it.  NFL teams will offer him double what he makes now, and it won't matter.

I think the NFL showed him -- hell, was determined to show him -- that it's a business first, and not in a hole-in-the-wall restaurant sort, but the sort where Joffreys who inherit billions are put in charge of things with no competition or other means of getting rid of them.  You literally have to wait until they die of old age.

At Michigan, he has the means to build something.  He'll make his money, but I think the end result of his legacy is a building named after him, and a statue in his honor.

Two reasons for this post:

1) The source article by Mike Freeman, who claims he has heard people saying the offers will come.  I don't know him or how reliable his hearsay is, so it could be real or just generalization.

2) Many other websites picked up this story, and it was also discussed on the morning news radio (regular news, not sports station).  Therefore, I assumed there was some degree of truth in it and posted.

Neg away if you must.

his kids are a big factor..... his wife said that she wants to put down roots for the kids (and they have another kid on the way...). he loves the fact that they go to the same school that he went to...... i dont thing they are going anywhere soon.

btw.... its alot easier to deal with 18-year-old kids that will run thru a wall for you, as opposed to the alex boones of the nfl...

During the search it was insinuated that Harbaugh to NYJ - MIAMI or Oakland all over MICHIGAN.

That means raising a young family in New Jersey, South Beach or Oakland (and the Harbaugh residence in the Bay Area was a 2hr drive with Bay Area traffic to Oakland).

The Bears (who hired John Fox, lmao) were the only NFL franchise of appeal - Harbaugh played there and Sarah is a small town, KC-area Midwest girl, not the NorCal socialite she was made out to be.

They're not going anywhere.

Nice!!

And seriously, it's like with Fantasy Football ...all these hypothetical scenarios with pundits deciding where Harbaugh should go, based on theory and money and complete fiction and the false notion that the NFL is 'better' (if that were ever in doubt, it certainly is right now with the NFL suffering dramatically in ratings and overall enthusiasm for the product).

Harbaugh shows up at events early, stays late and takes pictures with anyone and everyone.  Nick Saban, on the other hand, keeps the engine running and slips out the back door at first opportunity.  He shows up at other M Athletic events on a regular basis, takes time for the charitable work and is a genuine guy.

All of this flies in the face of the notion that 'any NFL job' is better than college.

Because it's not.

Pete Carroll is getting $8mil/year as the highest paid NFL coach.  From what I've read Harbaugh is getting $9mil this year (might not be that much every year, but still) so exactly how much more money can an NFL team throw at him?

In addition to things others have said in the thread, Harbaugh has power at UM and the love and respect of the fans.  Yes, he has to recruit teenagers and schmooz the big donors, but literally all he has to do is win and he is set.  And he happens to be working for a university with large resources and has a boss he knows and gets along with.

I think it was a blessing Harbaugh is a former NFL coach: He has cred with the recruits, plus he knows how it is on that side so the grass should always look greener on the side he's on.

He is not going anywhere unless there is internal fight as we have witnessed from some other schools.

Money is not everything - he probably understands that better than most of us.

Mgrowold will try, and fail, to win the super lotto, have his youngest child keep his room clean without being told and to get Charlotte McKinney and Kate Upton to perform for his enjoyment in the nude.

Why don't NFL teams make a run at Urban? I understand that Saban has failed in the NFL and that may make teams wary (but so did Pete Carrol and look at his NFL success).

Just not sure why they don't take a shot at Urban.

I think he's a good coach X's and O's wise, but to me, he has superior athletes that make his system look better than it is. Chip Kelly was figured out in about 5 minutes in the NFL, and I think it would be similar with Urban. The college game is where it's at for him, where he can have an imbalance of talent and speed.

He consistently fields elite offenses and defenses. Like Harbaugh, it seems his defenses are better than his offenses. I don't think there's much evidence to suggest Urban wouldn't do well in the NFL.

Aside from X's and O's being an elite coach requires being an elite manager of men, organizational structure, and identifying assets (players). I would give Urban a shot. Doesn't mean he'll succeed but I don't think theres enough evidence to suggest he'd be in over his head.

couple things:  Running quarterbacks like the ones Urban employs (heh) have been tried in the NFL and have not worked.

The offense is relatively simple which allows athletes to athlete without really thinking; doesn't work in the L because everyone is a super athlete

A manager of men he hasnt proven to be. They call them college kids for a reason.

The only reason, if true, that there isn't enough evidence to know if he would be in over his head or not is because he hasn't tried to go to the L. Maybe that could tell you something.

agent not to even entertain NFL GM's if they came knocking or Urban.

Some guys are college guys...Urban seems like it.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him take a stab at the NFL but unlikely.

Coaching at OSU he's a God and recruiting is relatively easy compared to other places around the country. Ohio pumping out talent in his backyard and cherry picking elites from across the Nation= money.

I don't think Urban has the balls to try and be an even bigger God and take the Browns job. I don't think he's that stupid though.

Contraband, a trillion dollars and a starship? Are we talking the USS Enterprise or Millennium Falcon?

I might have to hear those talks.

PS - Coach and the entire staff need a raise.

they should offer him a piece of the team as a bonus for winning the Super Bowl. I don't think a high salary offer will ever draw him away from a job and a place he loves.

Elway was offered the option to buy part of the team. It obviously would have been a great investment and much smarter than what he actually did with his money.

No way he was offered a eight figure salary to be an assistant executive. The reason he was offered the shares is they were low on cash. You may be confusing the salary with the amount he was already owed by the team.
