Iowa roll call and visitor suggestions

Submitted by WhoopinStick on

Making my first road trip to the University of Iowa on Friday where I'll be meeting up with several other Michigan fans that will also be first timers.   For those that have been there before we'd greatly appreciate any recommendations for places to go Friday night, things to do during the day on Saturday, and suggestions for best spots for tailgating!

Who else is making the road triip this weekend?

First time to Kinnick for me as well. Flying to Des Moines Friday night. Lodging in Des Moines. Will spend the day in/around Iowa City. Excited for the night game! It will add to the feeling of this being a BIG game.

was there in 2011 (went to all games that year - historic for me !)   Anyway - last time I parked in a hill side lot that was adjacent to a permit lot ... majority being Hawkeye fans but scattered Michigan students in the lot too.  So how far away is Finkbine Golf Course from the stadium ?

Thanks and Go Blue!

Also making my first trek to Kinnick Stadium, along with my brother and two buddies, the latter of which have never attended an away game.  Really excited for the trip and the game!  Looking forward to checking out the gameday atmosphere in Iowa City.

Think we're in Section 134 which I presume is a visitor area seeing as the tickets were purchased through the Michigan AD.

I went to the night game a few years ago and had a blast. We didn't tailgate though. We posted up at a bar and watched football and bar hopped all day then walked up the hill to the stadium. It was a great time and the setup there is pretty great. Several bars/food options then just follow the crowd to the stadium. We parked in a garage in downtown Iowa City and walked everywhere. Fun college town.

First time in Iowa City for a game (although I lived there as a young child).  Taking my three oldest kids with me.  Flying in to Omaha on Friday (cheapest flight from Dallas with points). Tickets are in Section 108.  Looking forward to a beatdown!

First timer going with friends and family as well.

We are staying a little outside of Iowa City but want to walk around the campus and see the "must-see" aspects of Iowa so to speak.

Also a good restaurant or food options would be appreciated.

Monica's is a great restaurant right in Coralville (North edge of IC).  Everything I've ever had there is good.  Wide variety menu.

Wig and Pen has outstanding pizza.  It's just down the street from Monica's.

In Iowa City on campus, check out the Ped Mall (Pedestrian Mall).  Lots of food choices there.T

If you want a nice dinner (a little more pricey, but still reasonable), the Iowa River Power restaurant is nice with a great view of the river/dam.  All have websites for locations and menu options.

Daughter (who's a senior) and I will be there.  Going to every single game this year (her idea), so the journey won't be over until January 9th.  A stadium takeover a la Rutgers would be nice...

My previous trip to Iowa City was very enjoyable, except for the outcome of the game (Lloyd's first foray into rugby punting didn't turn out so well).   Iowa fans were pleasant sorts.   Maybe they will be more unpleasant if the Hawkeyes get steamrolled.

I'll be there. Hoping to find a good place to watch the USMNT in the Hex the night before. Not sure about tailgating, we have heard that the apartment complex we are AirBnb'ing at has people tailgating at it but I might prefer going to a more populated lot.

How about the "no liquor at university lots" rule, though? That's an obstacle.

I once went to a record store in Iowa city that occupied the upstairs apartment of an old house. On the bannister leading up the stairs someone had left a neatly formed scoop of spaghetti bolognese.

Don't touch it.

Calling all Mgobloggers.....I'll be in lot 3 just east of the river close to the stadium.  Leaving suburban Chicago around 8 and plan to have full tailgate up and running by noon. Come by and say hello. You wont miss my set up...two Michigan tents...two 4 foot high top bar tables, multiple grills, TV...should be fun.

I think we parked at the Hancher commuter parking lot (Lot 55) the last time we attended a game at Kinnick.   The walk wasn't bad at all, and easy egress to I-80.   I think there also might be a free shuttle from this lot.    Not sure about tailgating legalities (alcohol) at this lot, so do your research before committing.

Two busloads will be going. We leave Friday morning from UM-Dearborn and stop to pick up others at Domino Farms in Ann Arbor. This group travels to almost every away game every year. Party all the way there. We have even met Wolverines at rest stops in Ohio to pick them up on the way to Penn State. If it is too far to drive from SE Michigan, there is a land package and everyone books their own flights.
