Week 10: Best thing you saw...

Submitted by mi93 on

That was enjoyable.  Opportunities to get better against edge rushing are good.  9-0 is certainly a great thing to see too.

Elsewhere (and with Washington - Cal still ongoing and entertaining so far):

- the SEC only has one team with less than 2 losses after A&M loses their QB and the #4 slot and FLA gets Bert-ed (PAC and Big 12s also only have one team with < 2 losses with only the PAC having a playoff shot);

- Baylor gets what they deserve for trying to rally for Briles;

- and what's not to Lovie about 4th and 3 for the win in Champagne?  Maybe great offensive play calling could help win lots of games rather than in an attempt to win just one.

This week, though, best thing I saw was Tommy Armstrong, Jr. returning to the Shoe after being carted off the field.  Great to see him running across the field to join his teammates.

What you got?

TCU destroying Baylor for what was an insult to everyone for wearing those black uniforms. And also Texas A&M clearing up any doubt for the committee as to whether they deserve a spot in the playoff or not

Was the young boy sitting behind us who was excitedly looking up players and numbers in the program after the play was announced. Warmed my maize & blue heart to see a young Wolverine eagerly and excitedly learning about his team.

And Steve Levy is talking about Mo Hurst's dad and a back injury he had.  He said bulging dick instead of bulging disk.  He didn't flinch after saying it wrong.  Apparently it's legend now.

equals the combined record of Sparty, following a loss to a woeful Illini squad, and ND, who get taken down by Navy.  Hard to believe - Michigan has 3 more wins than those two combined.

Screw Sparty and To Hell With Notre Dame!  Life is good!!!

Yea it's gotta be Tommy Armstrong coming back in the fourth to be with his team. His injury looked scary for a little, happy to see that he will be fine. Not to far behind was the play from our QB, he's been money most of this year. Not going to be easy taking his job youngsters

Setting up 2nd and 34 which Evans turned into a (near?) TD. Shamefully that play was not ruled a touchdown, but 2nd and 34 no big deal w today's offensive dominance.

There's no shame.  It wasn't a touchdown.  He carried the ball in his outside arm, which was above his outside leg, and he straddled the pylon.  The ball has to cross the goal line above or inside of the pylon to be a touchdown.  It didn't.  The ball was correctly spotted inside the one yard line.

The ball does not have to pass over or inside the pylon. The plane can extend beyond the pylons. However, it is only extended if the player touches the pylon or the end zone. Unfortunately he did neither. Had he done either it would've been a touchdown.

It only extends out of bounds if a foot or hand contact the end zone. If Evans foot would have touched inside the end zone, that would have extended it out of bounds and the ball would have crossed it.

Correct. One foot was planted before the goal line. The other foot travels outside the pylon out of bounds. The first foot passes through the end zone but never establishes that he was in the end zone.
I don't know why people were up in arms about this not being a TD. It was blatantly clear to me.

Relevant text, Rule 8-2-1(a):

  1. A ball carrier advancing from the field of play has possession of a live ball when it penetrates the plane of the opponent’s goal line. This plane extends beyond the pylons only for a player who touches the ground in the end zone or a pylon.

Now, if you want to argue that the ball was inside the pylon, that's your perogative, but I thoguht it was outside; I just rewatched the replays, and he clearly touched neither the ground in the end zone nor the pylon.  (Kudos to Brian Griese for explaining the rule clearly on the broadcast, BTW).  I think it was the right call; at best, it was disputable, so they were correct not to overturn it, and I stand by my original statement that it wasn't a "shameful" call at all.

The best thing I saw -- well, heard -- was the chanting from the Horseshoe while Tommy Armstrong was lying on the turf.  Tom-my! Tom-my!, and then Tom-my Arm-strong!

I was listening to Huskers radio, and the guys in the booth were audibly moved by the gesture, which they said came from the OSU student section.  I never thought I'd be saying this, but hats off to the OSU students for their show of sportsmanship.

I think every fan base has assholes, maybe some more than others... But by and large I'd like to think that most are actually respectful and humanity wins out. I don't think anybody wants to see a college kid get seriously injured, and the few sociopaths out there that might, well, we can't paint with a broad brush because of them... But still, you are correct. Classy move by those Buckeyes that started and participated in that chant.

But possibly in part motivated by the buttkicking that was ongoing at the time. I'm just being honest. If Nebraska was up 28-0 at that point, I sincerely doubt that you hear this chant.

Still, yes, it was nice to see. I'll give those mouthbreathers a little credit on this one.  ;-)

Right? With N entering the red zone. Good chance if TAJ doesn't go out, it is 24-10 at the half, with seven of that 24 basically spotted to OSU. N likely would have still lost, and the outcome would never have been in doubt, but it wouldn't have been the bloodbath that it was.

Like I said, each fan base has the assholes, and maybe even a few sociopaths (like the ones in ours that threatened our punter last year)... And maybe there was an unusually large number in attendance at that game... But I'd like to think/hope that if the entire fan base were somehow polled or judged in reaction to such a circumstance, that at least the majority would care for the safety of the human being. Maybe I'm being far too optimistic or naive, but I actively want to have faith in humanity.
