Most Points in a season
After today's drubbing, I decided to see where team 137 ranks historically.
Year | Coach | Record | Points |
---|---|---|---|
1902 |
Yost |
11-0-0 | 644 |
1904 |
Yost |
10-0-0 | 567 |
1903 |
Yost |
11-0-1 | 565 |
1901 |
Yost |
11-0-0 | 550 |
1905 |
Yost |
12-1-0 | 495 |
2003 |
Carr |
10-3-0 | 460 |
2011 |
Hoke |
11-2-0 | 433 |
2016 |
Harbaugh |
432 | |
1976 |
Schembechler |
10-2-0 | 432 |
We are currently tied at 8th all time with at least 4 games left to play. Currently averaging 48 points per game, if we continue on that pace for the last 4 games, we end up with 624 points, which is good for 2nd most all time. Of course, if we put up 48 against Ohio State, we might as well add a 5th game for the Big Ten championship game, which would have the potential to make this the highest scoring team in Michigan history.
It's a long shot, but would be amazing. As it stands, this team should end up being the highest scoring team since the Yost teams.

No rich rod on this list demonstrates what a disaster that was.

Precisely.
How many of those 2011 points was Denard responsible for? I'll be conservative and say all of them.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:56 PM ^
You can credit Denard's touchdowns, Hoke' coaching or Carr's seniors on the team. Pick one or all. But you can't credit the guy that emptied the bench for the next 3 years and just lost 7-69 to WSU.

Say whatever you will about high scoring games and the relative competition - to finish with numbers approaching the Yost era is impressive.
November 6th, 2016 at 9:47 AM ^
Has moved on to Oregon.
November 6th, 2016 at 10:00 AM ^
Fuck you.
November 6th, 2016 at 10:06 AM ^
whoa there. a little early to be drinking for a Sunday morning eh?
November 6th, 2016 at 10:31 AM ^
You want to credit the coach who led michigan to their worst offensive output of the modern Era? Michigan scored 250 points in 2014 and was so inept one offense that it was laughable, but sure coach hoke is responsible for that 2011 offense being so prolific. Don't get me wrong, richrod's defenses were just as epically bad, but to credit hoke for 2011 is like sticking your head in the sand.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:56 PM ^
A poor man's Rich Rod offense. If I remember correctly, Hoke and co stubbornly tried to run a pro style offense until about the Nebraska game when they decided to spread it out and run an offense that suited the players
November 5th, 2016 at 11:54 PM ^
Hoke didn't walk across the country for this job just to play basketball on grass.
November 6th, 2016 at 10:02 AM ^
Oh God, the walking quote! As if Hoke would have the conditioning to pull that off.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:47 PM ^
Look, I'm not here to argue if he was a good coach or not, but I do think that offense was his specialty and Hoke had the benefit of an offense that might of been historically great if it weren't suffocated by bad coaching.
The offense under Hoke got worse each year after that.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:59 PM ^
Hoke had to rebuild a roster that RR had destroyed. And it's the starting roster we have this year.
November 5th, 2016 at 9:18 PM ^
Hoke rebuilt the roster for a completely different system and offensive philosophy. when RR's offense worked, it worked really well.
November 5th, 2016 at 9:26 PM ^
It worked really well against Delaware State and Western Michigan, but it never worked well against real teams.
November 5th, 2016 at 9:33 PM ^
We have Harbaugh!!! No need to have this debate again. It's offensive to my football sensibilities.
November 6th, 2016 at 12:58 AM ^
I'm with Mabel on this one.

Logged in to upvote you Mabel! Hush up you knuckleheads and move on!
November 6th, 2016 at 10:04 AM ^
It's always the RR hating trailer trash like "BoFan" who start these things.
November 6th, 2016 at 12:15 AM ^
Richrod's offense never did anything useful vs a decent team while he was at Michigan
November 6th, 2016 at 10:36 AM ^
Both coaches were absolutely terrible as evidenced by their tenure at Michigan and afterwards. Both will probably be looking for a job in a couple weeks.
November 6th, 2016 at 5:06 PM ^
Did you forget about the O-line problems that resulted from RR recruiting? Forget about Taylor Lewan's statement during a postgame presser? Gardner deserved tons of credit for playing behind that line--he got beaten up by opposing defenses but still gave it his best each game. BTW, consider which of the current O-line members were recruited by Hoke's staff.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:53 PM ^
They scored 32.6 PPG in 2010, so it's not like his offense was a disaster. It was the defense.
2011 was 33.3 PPG. Not exactly far off.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:58 PM ^
Right! /s
His offense today lost 7-69 to WSU.
November 5th, 2016 at 9:20 PM ^
Right!
Denard was straight trash! /s

Saw this on ESPN:
From ESPN Stats and Information: Michigan has as many 50-point wins against FBS opponents this season (3) as it had during the Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hoke eras (2008 to 2014).

I'd like to see where this team winds up historically with regards to points margin, our offense and defense both look historically good right now.

my spreadsheet has both, but I did not compare spreads. will have to do it later if nobody else does. those Yost teams were flat out dominant though, I don't think 2016 beats them in point differential
November 5th, 2016 at 7:36 PM ^
7 games with 40 or more points - the offense has been just as impressive as the defense and special teams. It's like watching a complete team.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:38 PM ^
It was all about the offense not making mistakes and doing enough to get the defense a blow so we can win a bunch of 17-3, 17-6, 17-10 type games.
November 5th, 2016 at 8:32 PM ^
after the first couple of games, I expected regression. I assumed the special teams and defensive TDs would dry up. they have, but the offense vastly improved. I'm just amazed at how consistently our offense puts up points, it's really a thing to admire when they are clicking.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:39 PM ^
Yes. This is the most complete team we have had in years. So grateful for Harbaugh. Oh wait...another OSU fan just told me that Harbaugh is leaving for the NFL in a year or two. I better not get too excited.

from the State fan who told me the same thing. On the other hand, we're hearing it from two disparate sources, so it is probably true. Right?
November 5th, 2016 at 7:37 PM ^
Impressive but those Yost teams did it with less games.

Thank you for pointing that out...I didn't want to be the one.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:46 PM ^
It's the same thing with records, like rushing yards and whatnot. There are more games these days, so it is not as impressive when someone breaks a record from decades ago. There used to be 9 or 10 games a year plus a bowl game. Now there are up to fifteen games a season. Huge advantage these days to break records. Can't fault the current or recent players for that, but it is what it is.

exactly. it's a completely different game today. there is more complexity and parity now than Yost dealt with.
this was just an armchair quick stat, nothing deeper.
November 5th, 2016 at 8:02 PM ^
We all know that. It doesn't really need to be pointed out.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:41 PM ^
amazing teams.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:45 PM ^
*fewer

and fewer points per touchdown....
November 6th, 2016 at 8:33 AM ^
Touchdowns were 5, but extra point kicks were two. On the other hand it was all on the ground, no passing.
November 5th, 2016 at 8:03 PM ^
And without face masks.
November 5th, 2016 at 8:20 PM ^
is get 106 next week, and 107 after that and there you go; eleven games, 645 points. Easy.
November 5th, 2016 at 7:40 PM ^
How the season finishes out we will likely finish higher than any team not coach by Yost (aka over 100 years worth of football). That says a lot about Harbaugh and what his teams look like when he gets it going. Very impressive.
