Reffing in Michigan State games

Submitted by ertai on

Here are Brian's UFR referee grades for this year's MSU game:

Offense: +3, -7, -4 overall

Defense: +0, -22, -22 overall

Total: +3, -29, -26 overall

Fans always complain about reffing, but this is ridiculous. I remember reffing being terrible for many of the other Michigan-MSU games in the past. Why is it always so bad for just this game? What can Michigan and the Big 10 do about it?

At the start of each game, each ref has a balance of $10,000 (maybe it varies based on how much influence/responsibility the particular ref has on the game.

After the game each team submits a list of plays for review to the official ref-ing review board. The reffing review board deducts $500 (or vary based on the egregiousness) dollars for each missed/incorrect penalty.

I realize that a particular school could just submit a bunch of junk but I would also publish a list of a schools overall success rate at the end of the year. This way if a school/coach goes overboard they would be shamed at the end of the year.

This idea is not fully formed so it has flaws.

I imagine even if they could them accountable they wouldn't. The NCAA and the B1G are so ridiculous. I don't know if the NCAA and NFL are the same in regards to officials. But making them full time employees and having them do mandatory weekly training on the rules and review process would be a nice start.

I do, if Tackle Taco Tuesdays (on Saturday) continue to cost us yards in more competitive games.

OSU is grabby as hell in their outside run game and were the beneficiaries of some dubious non-calls in their comeback against Wisconsin.

Don't we have an option to compile questionable calls and submit to the B1G for review? I would hope someone would be all over that. Granted, nothing will come of it, but it's about the principle, damnit!
