Michigan State Snowflakes: General Observations

This will be the repository for your hot takes which defy neat categorization for our game versus Michigan State.

MSU guys always seem to want that game more than our players do. We beat them today because we just had more talent and it prevailed. MSU played very well compared to how bad they've looked this year.

MSU pretty much did the same thing last season. They were playing bad going into that game even then. It just shows how much they raise their level against us and we don't always match it.

If the talent had been anywhere near similar, their effort probably would've pulled this game out again.

They hate us more than we hate them, and it makes them put forth a more intense effort.

Seriously.  I came to the board to celebrate a win over MSU, not to hear Michigan fans bitch and moan because we didnt manage to beat them by fifty points.

Things got a little uncomfortable in the 4th quarter, but if you had told me at the beginning of the season that Michigan would be 8-0 and would beat MSU by 9 in East Lansing despite playing their worst game of the year, I would have taken in a heartbeat.

There are certain some things that will need to get fixed going forward, but people crying and carrying on like we just lost really need to get a grip.

Thank you. Some here act like we were supposed to win by 40 or 50. It's a rivalry game on the road. All that matter is the win. The worst are the people who keep saying we will lose to Iowa and/or Ohio State now even though Ohio State just barely got by Northwestern.  Come back to reality people.

He was getting interviewed on field as part of the gameday 15-second interview with the noon game coaches spiel and he said something like "We prepare for this game all year". In most seasons, that game IS their season. And in this year it was especially all they have to play for. Glad to know we ruined it for them.

See this was Michigan's plan all along. They knew they would win even though the refs would likely play to the home crowd and that Michigan State was essentially playing a bowl game/Super Bowl. So, why not get MSU fans hopes up, and then play a crappy, conservative game in order to make the terrible Michigan State offensive and defensive coordinators look like they called a good game, giving Dantonio a reason to keep them for next year essentially sabotaging next year. Harbaugh is a genius, Peppers for Heisman, Go Blue!

I know. But that's exactly what I'm talking about. They had the opportunity to step on their throat so many times and make that statement. Show that killer instinct against a hyped rival that Harbaugh embodies. And instead they folded in the moment and it was MSU that made the statement. Next year's game against MSU looks pretty iffy now considering what they were able to do so easily late.

I mean, I think we all agree that that happened today. I guess my thought is that the general pattern from Harbaugh is to destroy teams, go for 4th downs, be aggressive etc. So I don't worry about it on a recurring basis the way I did with some previous coaches who repeatedly lost games for that. There's more ruthlessness now, philosophically, so I'm a little disappointed...but not worried about how this played out being indicative of future problems.

In the end, after some time passes this will just be a win for us, and a turning point back to normalcy in the series.

No. I wanted a blowout because beating up an instate rival who recruits the same players you do means something. I wanted a blowout because in the end, everything comes down to the OSU game. And everything before that tells me how the team is expected to perform in that game. So when I see the number 2 team in the nation have opportunity to get a kill shot against a highly motivated rival on the road, and repeatedly not take it, the fold late, yeah, I find that disappointing because of what it means for the OSU game.

I guess we'll just disagree.  But I hear you saying past performance isn't predictive of future performance, which, at least when it comes to football, is not usually true.  But whatever.  If UM wins the B1G, I can look back at this and shrug and chalk it up to rivalry stuff.  If they struggle down the stretch and/or don't win the B1G, then it looks like all that early season flash, was in fact just that, flash.

I dunno man, everything about the 4th quarter was bad. We were 30-10 in the 4th and gave MSU a serious chance to win. Sphincterball was in full effect

missing the 2-pt conv kept them down by 7 (poor pitch and subsequent 2-pt return not withstanding).  If they make it then a TD wins without an extra point attempt.  I do not care for MD but petty?  Really?  My point is we do not have to trump up stuff to prove that MD is a deusch bag.

This team played like fucking garbage the second half. I don't care if they are our rivals or not, MSU is a garbage team and the score should have been 42-17. Also don't like seniors like Hill falling for the bait and committing personal fouls.

Offense was great in the first half, poor in the second. Defense was bad at times and solid at times.

Michigan did not look like the 2nd best team in the country. How you stop playing in the 2nd half of a rivalry game I have no clue.

Really disappointed with the defense and the team's effort in the second half.

Exactly. Occasionally weird shit happens on the road. And weird shit happens in rivalry games. The hallmark of a good team is to survive the weird shit and win.

I mean Jesus....a bad 7-5 Michigan team that squeaked out wins over UConn and Akron was a failed 2-or conversion away from beating #3 Ohio State a few years ago.
