OT: Why are all of my teams struggling?

Submitted by the_big_house 500th on

It's really difficult to figure out why I have the worst luck when it comes to my sports teams. In the last 10 years only 1 of them went the distance and that was the Wings but recently all of my favorites have just fallen short every year it feels like.

1. Michigan (most recent)
2. Green Bay Packers
3. Cleveland Indians
4. Columbus Crew
5. Columbus Blue Jackets
6. Columbus Clippers

I'm also partially a Blue Jackets fan but I have always placed Detroit first as they are my original team. Anybody else having a losing lineup too as of late?

Considering the fanbase attracted to this site, might it not be better to ask if anybody does not have a losing lineup as of late?

That being said...it's all up from here (let's hope)!

That all professional teams in Ohio suck. Every one of them currently is just god aweful in all aspects. The Clippers have one of the nicest minor league stadiums in the game but they are just terrible to watch. The Crew won the MLS Cup in 2008 so I was happy to see them do well. I've always been a fan of them. This past year however they didn't even make the MLS playoffs. The Indians: Nuff said. I've often thought about dropping them to become a Tigers fan instead. Green Bay: I'm a Packer fan till death, that runs in my family. My dad was one and my brother is too. As for the others Jackets and what not, typical shitty ohio franchise ownership with in the organizations. I can't tell you how many times Ive heard in Nationwide at a Jackets game some fan yelling "THIS IS WHY WE DON'T MAKE THE PLAYOFFS." Sad part is they're right.

Try being a Maple Leaf fan. They are 29th, traded away their first and second round pick this year and their first round pick next year to Boston for Phil Kessel. If we are lucky we will make the playoffs by 2020.

Not only am I a fan, but I have season tickets to each of the following:

-Red Wings
-Michigan Football
-Michigan Hockey
-College Hockey at the Joe

I have spent a fortune this year to suffer in person.

they have been my consistant team year in and year out. 2 Stanley Cups since 2000. (2002,2008). So in my eyes they have always been my "there when I need it team." I envy you though man because I would love to see a Michigan game at Yost and have season tickets to the Wings season. I love Joe Louis Arena and sadly I have only been inside it once and that was for the Quarterfinals Matchup last year between them and the Jackets. It was game 2 and Detroit killed them 4-0. There is nothing like the playoff atmosphere in Detroit, god it was amazing. I'd love to have that feeling again too.

You're a Blue Jackets fan.

I'm sorry, but I'm getting really tired of your posts. They're always about the pep talk you wish you could give the football team or whining about how they aren't winning. Please stop.

La Salle Basketball- Projected 4th in A10 and at least expected to go to NIT failed to qualify for the A10 tournament
Oakland Raiders- Since they got killed by the Bucs in the Super Bowl they have been as bad as the Lions if not worse
Liverpool- Looks like they might not even finish in the Top 4 this year and the only cup they are still in is the UEFA Cup

Let's see. I have:

Michigan football.
Michigan basketball.
Virginia football.
Virginia basketball.
Detroit Lions. Eat shit and die, whiny Packers fan.
Detroit Pistons.
Detroit Tigers.
Detroit Red Wings. No playoffs this year?

About the only thing keeping me afloat is UVA non-rev sports, which are doing really well, thank you.

Boo hoo, my packers havent "gone the distance" in the past ten years. Go to hell. My Lions havent made the playoffs in 10 years. I dont think they have had a winning record in the last ten years. This is no place to piss and moan about the packers, blue jackets or any other team from the armpit of america.

When it comes to the Jackets I never wanted them here anyways. I was a fan of only one hockey team that was in Columbus and that was the Chill. The best mother fucking rodwy sons of bitches the ECHL ever saw. You wanted to see hockey that had constant hitting, fighting and actually well organized hockey the Chill was the team to watch. Hell Ruskowski threw all the sticks on the bench on the ice during a game because of a bad no goal call. The scoreboard literally said on it "raise hell." This was no Jackets team that I can guarantee. I'd never EVER in a million fucking years buy season tickets to Jackets games to watch a team lose 6-0 or 7-0 every night.

Chicago Bears - mortgaged the future for Cutler... that worked out
Chicago Bulls - D rose is good, but we're a few years away (aren't we always?)

that underarm deodorant. I use Mennen, and it seems to be getting me some points.

Also--whoa--anything w. "Columbus" in it tends to throw up a red flag. . .

I think you should switch you allegiance to Ohio St. for the following season. And cheer for Michigan St. and Notre Dame while you're at it.

You should back up your things, move to Europe or South America, and become a rabid soccer fan. Of course if your "soccer" teams start losing, maybe you should consider giving up sports all together.

UM football, basketball and hockey
Baseball: Tigers and Reds- nuff said
NFL: Bears (although they have made a SB this decade)
NBA: Chicago Bulls- still missing MJ
NHL: Red Wings- good until this year

With my teams I never know what to expect because most of them are playoff caliber if the chips fall right but over the last couple of years they haven't been. No consistency.

Is anyone a fan of a team thats doing well?

if you're a fan of Michigan sports and Detroit sports.

Detroit Lions. nuff said.
Detroit Pistons. Ehhhhh
Detroit Red Wings. Down year compared to previous years
Detroit Tigers. Choked their way out of playoff race/AL Central race.
Michigan football/basketball. nothing need to be said.

1. Michigan Football
2. Michigan Basketball
3. Seattle Seahawks
4. Detroit Lions
5. Edmonton Oilers
6. Seattle Mariners
7. Detroit Tigers
8. Detroit Pistons
9. Seattle Sonics (left)

Last year's Michigan Basketball team the only bright light the last 2 years.
Here's to hoping for a good run for the MNT in the World Cup this summer, although they would probably rather not have me root for the them.

An unlikely team has helped remind me that sports can be fun: my local high school hockey team. Thanks to three thrilling 4-3 victories (two of which came in overtime), Chelsea hockey has now advanced further into the state playoffs than ever before. They won again last night and are in the semifinals tomorrow at Compuware Arena.

What makes this more fun is that this isn't the strongest team Chelsea has produced in the last four years. Actually, the teams of the last 2-3 years were more skilled than this year's team, which finished the regular season just under .500. Everybody expected the last two or three teams to get this far in the playoffs, and few expect this year's team to get anywhere near this far. But somehow, these guys figured out how to win when they needed to win.

So yeah, the college and pro teams I follow are suffering. But I'm still having fun anyway. Barring another miracle, there's a pretty good chance this unlikely playoff run ends tomorrow (they're going to play Flint Powers Catholic, which...well, I think 23-2-3 says it all), but that won't make it all any less enjoyable. First-ever accomplishments like this are always fun.

Reminds me of Playoff NBA basketball. Oh, how I used to love 4-5 years back when the Pistons were always the #1 seed going in. It was always a question of who we would face in the Eastern Conf Finals.
The gong whenever Ben Wallace did something ridiculous.
The horn anytime Rip re-invented the lost art of the mid-range jumper.
The Bah-Bah-Bah-Billups whenever he hit a clutch 3.
The Sheeeeeed anytime he caught the ball in the post.
These were truly the sounds of spring. They trump the chirping of the birds.

Eh, that's a different kind of bad. The Pirates haven't even had a 100-loss season in that run except for once. They just sort of show up and cause ennui-induced depression and apathy. Maybe they end up last, maybe they don't, but they're very consistent and always settle nicely into that 66-74 win range (though lately it's been worse than usual) and overall they basically just exist. That's kind of the way the Tigers were in the mid-late 90s and early part of this decade until 43-119 embarrassed Ilitch into action.

The Lions are more ire-inducing than apathy-causing. They're spectacularly shitty in ways that piss everyone off, and turn themselves into a laughingstock by drafting fat and lazy wide receivers, stepping out of the back of the end zone, taking the wind in overtime, speeding out of practice on a motorcycle, stealing the bags of the teammate that replaced you, etc. etc. The Pirates got to where they are by just puttering along with conventional wisdom and not being very good at it. The Lions buck conventional wisdom and always seem to end up on Sportscenter for it.....along with finding a way to make history at 0-16 in the process. The Pirates make their fans tune out; the Lions find new ways to piss them off.
