TomVH: Trai Turner Update

Submitted by TomVH on

Trai Turner is a 6-foot-5, 340-pound OT from Louisiana.

I spoke with him today, and he told me he currently has a Michigan offer. He also has offers from SMU, Kentucky, Houston, Southern Miss, and Tulsa. He has verbal offers from Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi State. Nebraska also told him that they will be offering today.

Trai is good friends with Carvin Johnson, and said that Carvin picking Michigan will definitely play into who he chooses. They played on opposing teams, and Trai laid a big hit on Carvin after he intercepted the ball. They talked about it together, and have been friends since.

Michigan is high on his list, because of his friendship, and also because of the relationship he's building with Rich Rodriguez. Being in Louisiana, it's going to be hard for him to make a visit, unless it's an official one. He is definitely going to try to get up to Ann Arbor, though.

He should have his highlight tape soon, it's being created right now. It sounds like we have a really good shot here.

He just emailed me his highlight video (it's not done, so he doesn't want it out, yet). He's a monster.

He said that he plays with a little mean streak. He's right.

I'm pretty sure that you can play however you damn well please!

But seriously though do you think that this could could make it through conditioning since it's hard on the "big boys"?

to be a 6-2, 200 lb. high school defensive end, playing all day against Trai. And just beat down, for 60 or 70 plays. That would be a good week to sprain your ankle on Thursday.

...recruiting kids like Carvin Johnson who have their heads on straight. Sounds like we may have another budding Ricardo Miller in this class.

It seems like the coaches are going after a few linemen this year who don't necessarily fit the "lean and athletic" mold, whereas last year, that didn't seem to be the case. I wonder if that's indicative of the rumor floating around that Rodriguez wants the linemen to add a little bit of beef this year...

I was thinking the exact same thing.

It seems like the coaches have learned after their first two years in the Big Ten that 280 pound offensive lineman might not be the best idea. Although, I think at 340 pounds, Trai Turner might be a little too big to be effective in RR's offense.

If Trai comes to Michigan, I see him working with Barwis and trimming down to 320 lbs of solid muscle and being a complete beast.

I think they are looking for strength, speed, and explosion over body fat. UM is "small" because they are young and aren't fat. I think we will see a big improvement this year with the same players who were "too small" last year.

It won't come from pizza, though; it will come from the weight room and chronological growth.

I'm wondering when we will have another Jake-Long-like offensive lineman. Obviously, nobody will be quite the same as him, but I'm just talking about a huge dude that can dominate most defensive linemen he faces. I'm hoping some of our current guys can turn into even half the blocker Jake Long was. Trai Turner sounds like a whole different animal. Is Trai a super muscular dude or are we talking the Terrence Cody build, DT from Alabama?
