Past Players(that didn't work out) in Don Brown's Defense
Random Bye Week question:
Which ex-Michigan players do you think would thrive in Don Brown's defense that did not have much success during their time in Ann Arbor?
I would love to see Marvin Robinson at the Peppers position, as well as Pipkins at NT.

than he was at safety. He came in with a big rep and made some big plays and big hits. I know he was an All-American, but he was a boom or bust player on the field, too many breakdowns in coverage. He was not a bad player by any means, but I think he had the potential to be a lot better.

Shazor couldn't cover a grenade. Its why he had no NFL career to speak of.
But, he could hit like a train. That's why he was an all-american - run support.
Ian Gold is probably the worst answer to this question that ever existed as he had a wonderful Michigan career.

Despite a lot of talent, never really used properly, but was still one of the best players on some trainwreck defenses. Still was good enough to get drafted and go on to have a solid NFL career that is still going well past the average career length (albeit as a bit of journeyman).

NT is not that different in Brown's scheme compared to Mattison's. Pip would have done fine in Brown's scheme....if he didnt have Mone and Glassgow ahead of him on the depth chart.
Robinson...I dunno....he just looked awkward everywhere.

Another answer that came to mind is Brian Cole at safety, but he'd pretty much be a plug and play in any defense.

shame it didnt work out with cole, he has a chance to be a really good safety and it wouldve been huge to have another impact player in that small '15 transition class

He's a starter for TTU, and NFL clubs are putting somewhere around between #15-#30 among DT in the 2017 draft.
He's ranked right around Mo Hurst on most draft projections.

15-30 is a big range for just a position. So he can be a possible 3rd or go undrafted?

Once you get past the top 10 guys at a position - you tend to see a lot of variability in the rankings.

Low hanging fruit, but it would be hard NOT to improve if your defensive coordinator changes from GERG to Don Brown.

I remember Kenny Demens being decent in spite of GERG's coaching and actually quite good once Hoke/Mattison took over. I dunno for sure that he'd be starting but at the very least I think he'd be in the two deep, spelling Gedeon and McCray

Craig Roh. I can't think of a player who was misused during the RR era worse than Roh.

He wasn't bad as an end. I think he could have been a pretty good player if he had proper coaching.
On the other hand, Roh at linebacker was one of the worst experiments I can remember. He was so bad in space.

as it is about the overall defensive coaching staff. Somehow, I think a lot of Michigan's DBs and safeties of "yesteryear" would be even better with the level of coaching Harbaugh has brought to Ann Arbor. The linebackers would be better too given Don Brown handles linebackers. As for the D line, I think Glenn Steele, Brandon Graham, and others did just fine with the coaching they got during their years.
