Brad Hawkins prep school update

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Brad Hawkins had 14 receptions for 208 yards in Suffold's most recent 48-41 OT win.

He had 2 TDs. Here was his quote on being asked about his status

Link to the article where an NJ.com fool thinks some bottom-feeder in NJ will steal him.

"Right now, I'm still committed. I'm still committed to Michigan, right now. Things are going well with them," he said. "So nothing has changed. I'm still committed, I'm still loyal to them."

But Hawkins is still, at least, open to hearing from the multiple suitors to come through Suffield. And he admits that Rutgers is the team recruiting him hardest.

"They are just saying they would love to have me and they need receivers," said Hawkins.

Hawkins says he's contacted by Rutgers wide receivers coach Jafar Williams every other day, while he hears from Iowa and Michigan coaches a couple times per week.

According to Hawkins, Michigan will still take him despite him not qualifying initially. Hence, when he speaks to passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach Jedd Fisch, they discuss other things.

"I already know where I stand," said Hawkins. "That's been discussed, so we just talk about how I'm doing."

He did sign. Dytarious did not, but from what I've heard Dytarious is definitely coming here in January.

He's not even playing football right now, just taking classes at a prep school for the semester.

Someone yesterday said no chance he comes to Michigan, but this seems to contradict that heavily.  If Fisch is still in touch with him I imagine there's something there.  That said, it could also be to make sure Hawkins and his family and HS coaches don't think we flat out bailed on the kid.  Who knows, hope he lands here or somewhere else good (not Rutgers).

Who are you going to believe here?  This Hawkins guy who claims to have some "insider information" on who's talking to him or our own Mr Yost?

Seems pretty clear to me that Yost has the scoop on what's going down.  I wouldn't listen to a word this Hawkins fellow says.  What does he know?

Come on.

He's making the extra effort to come HERE by taking the hard way and going to prep school, when he could've just went somewhere else that doesn't have our standards and probably played this Fall.

Let's not mock him.

It's simply not true. There are multiple examples of recruits denied admission that were qualified and enrolled elsewhere. There are many more who our coaches had to back off from because they wouldn't make it past admissions. Michigan grants a limited number of waivers, allowing coaches to take some kids whose scores fall on the low range of NCAA of qualifying. They do require more core classes than the NCAA minimum and I don't believe they waive that. Wisconsin and ND do the same thing. That's why Wisconsin lost a signee to MSU a couple of years ago.

The NCAA now allows "academic redshirts". Those are recruits who fall somewhat below qualifying. They must redshirt as freshmen. You can be sure that MSU will take some and I highly doubt we ever will.

I was specifically thinking of Hawkins case, although I didn't state it. He was denied eligibility by the NCAA Clearinghouse, not UM so he would not have been allowed to play at any FBS/FCS school.

Michigan uses the NCAA for admissions, and the Big Ten for GPA metrics as a policy. These are not higher than any other school in the conference.

That being said, it is a lot harder to maintain the minimum GPA at UM than say MSU because the courses are more difficult and they don't inflate grades like other schools.

So basically, if an athlete shows red-flags that they may not be able to maintain eligibility they could be denied admissions on an individual basis, although that's not "the written policy". The university has a set number of "non-standard" (basically high risk) that they will allow. This number is not made public, because it allows for some gray area. At the end of the day, it all depends on the quality of the athlete.

That was the rumor, but that was also in 2011. New NCAA eligibility rules went into effect Jan 1st of this year. They are much stricter than before, and are on par with what UM's personal policy threshold used to be in regards to core classes required, GPA, and test scores. That is why the NCAA policy is used now.

Obviously he seems like he is a take but wouldn't he and dytarious johnson count against this class in terms of numbers?  Because it seems like we are already tight on numbers and now you are adding in two more commits and I'm just not sure how the math is going to work out unless a bunch of guys drop out of the class or we finish really dissapointingly with the guys we are in on.

I did not expect that he would still be a take. But if his grades improve, why not? He can obviously play.

How does he compare skill wise to the 4 main targets Michigan has focused on? With this year's freshman class and pretty solid with DPJ, Collins, Black and Oliver (if I remember correctly), that would be a lot of WRs.

But I would be surprised if he is part of the next class. Lack of depth at other positions (line) and DB just make it seem unnecessary to take him at this point.

If Hawkins wants to play WR then I agree with you. But it seems like he was ticketed for safety even before the issue with his grades came up. That's one of our thinnest position groups, especially if Hudson's long-term future is at the Peppers spacebacker spot.

Nice numbers, but still prep school. I still think at the next level he's best suited to bulk up and become more of a move TE or a safety. We'll see where he ends up though. He could end up as an outside WR in more of a spread system.

I remember playing NCAA 2005 for the GameCube. Unlike the more complex Dynasty mode in later versions, you had to pick one of about five recruiting pitches for each recruit. It was kind of fun starting out as a really crappy team, because you could pitch immediate playing time to everyone and have a decent chance at success.

Good luck to the young man. Tough situation be in. Hopefully it works out for him. The 2017 WR crop is going to be very deep though.

Very deep but possibly unproven.

Sure, McDoom and Crawford are getting in on some plays and jet sweeps, but when Darboh, Butt and Chesson walk out the door in January, I'd say more than 75% of this year's receiving production will be walking out with them.

We'll have a talented receiving corps to say the least, but unless we see these guys getting in a lot more this year (which they very well may), they'll all have a lot to prove next Fall.
