Lewis vs Woodson: whose iconic INT was better?

Yeah, take a breather, WD. Lewis's INT was spectacular but you're insane if you consider it to be iconic, let alone iconic on the level of Woodson.

was iconic. You may not think it rivaled Woodson's (though I think from a purely athletic perspective it was pretty close), but it is a play I will always remember and put an exclamation point on an all time great career at Michigan.

Seriously?? That may just be the catch of the year in college football. This is going to turn into a generational thing. Guys over 30 are going to say Woodson. Younger may say Lewis. Both where phenomenal catches that will be talked about for years. No disrespect to Woodson, but this was a deep ball that was thrown in man to man coverage, game on the line, he stretched out for 5 yards and caught it on the way down. After initially seeing the play, I thought the Woodson catch was better, but the more I watch the jourdan catch.. man.

This isn't even a close contest.  The Woodson interception was on a ball that was being THROWN AWAY.   Woodson basiclaly Houdinied with on hand and somehow got a foot in. 


Lewis on the other hand screwed up (self-admitted) and jumped too early, then managed to use his amazing athletic ability to still make an unbelievable interception.  And honestly, we would have been better off if he had just dropped it.  Fantastic play?  Absolutely.  Better than Woodson?  Not even close.

Usually I'd be in your camp but the catch was incredible and the one critique of his play last year was "wheres the picks?". 

Theres the picks.

I'd rather have the intangible benefits of the incredible play than the benefit of field position that ended up irrelivent.

If we go all the way this year too, Lewis' catch will be a big part of it. But so will every block, catch, kick, tackle, and run. This team is special.

Woodson's was like  I wasn't really paying attention cause it looked like QB ws just throwing away and that was a wow that he could catch that pass. Lewis was like "oh shit the receiver is behind him, thank god he hung in the air an extra fraction of a second.  Way more fear associated with the Lewis INT, Woodson's was a a little more spectacular.

I think the first few commenters missed all the snowflakes last night comparing these two. it's actually up for debate. I think woodson's is better if for no other reason than lewis' only reminded me of it, didn't surpass it.

but it was also in a blowout. lewis' was the game clincher. I understand the people saying knock it down, but honestly, he's so off balance that if he tries to knock it down, it could still end up in the receivers hands. I agree woodson's is more iconic and I think the fact that it's a tossed away ball makes the difference physically, but they're really close.

And we didn't actually capitalize on that int with scoring more points. we were the better team and pulled away. Woodson catching that had zero impact on the actual game other than maybe continuing our momentum. they couldn't move the ball on us all day and had he not intercepted it, we likely stop them anyway.

I guess it could've ended up in the receiver's hands, but it seems unlikely.  And I think there are two things that swing the debate easily to the Woodson catch.  One, if Woodson had dropped it, Sparty would've still had the ball and the game would've still been in doubt, whereas if Lewis drops it, it's still a game-clinching play.  And two, Woodson had to worry about the landing; Lewis did not.

also, the landing in the receiver's hands thing has happened before. recently. remember auburn beating UGA like that in 2013? two guys tried to swat it and it bounced up and the receiver caught it and scored. If JL whiffs (which is the most unlikely thing of all), he has a play on the ball. If he hits it, with the way he jumped so early, there's a chance it hits back up or keeps it going just enough to get back to the receiver still, similar to speight's int earlier in the game.

Were you alive for Woodson's, WD? This is not even a question. 

Woodson's was as spectacular of a catch, on the road, against a rival (coached by Saban), and had the added element of having to get a foot in bounds. 

Lewis made an incredible catch, but it's not Woodson's.

The cranky folks don't even know which one I think was a better play. I didn't say it. 

I just want to hear opinions because it was a debate at our tailgate last night.
