The idea of retiring Desmond's jersey was brought up during the 1990s but seems to have been shelved. I think the plan now is to not retire any more of them. The only one we've retired in the last 20-30 years is Ford's, and that was obviously a special case.

I'm not a fan of retiring numbers in college....
... but a big part of that is that 11 is my usual number in sports.. and I can't get a jersey with it...
I can't afford to get such a thing at this point in my life, but I have seriously considered going the custom-made route for my first NICE football jersey and selecting one of the retired numbers.
I mean, how cool would it be to walk around with a Tom Harmon jersey? Or Ford? They just aren't widely available, and I think it'd be cool, even if they are modern jerseys instead of true to time period. Plus, if you keep the names off the back you can test the knowledge of others around you to see if they call you out on the retired number.
Agreed, old #98 would be an awesome jersey to have. Archie Griffin's is still the most popular jersey at OSU--Michigan could probably make this work if part of the pre-game video was a tribute to great Wolverines of the past.
Also, how many team's fans can wear an ex-President's jersey? That's pretty awesome.

nice question, but NO. I want to see others wear those numberes and make the future fans proud of the the players wearing them.
When I'm in the autunm of my years I want to look down apon that field and see some 3.7/40 y.dash kid running a pick 6 or a 90 yard td pass from Chad Henne's great grandson wearing #7 against sparty or tOSU.

I use to wonder the same thing until I started reading history on Michigan football. The Wistert brothers story is really, really cool.
This has got me wondering...any guesses as to who will rock #5 next year? I bought a Forcier jersey last year but rumor has it he'll be switching to #4 so any ideas?
I'm hoping it's maybe Dorsey because that will allow me to dance like a jackass and say things like "O LET DO IT" and "WE BAWLIN' BOY" throughout games.
Right! THIS is why I'm glad we got a guy like Dorsey, even with the Freep shitstorm that came with him. I want U of M to have at least one player who will act ridiculous and give us all someone to talk about and emulate when we're drunk and stupid. That recent pic of blown-out Dorsey with his embroidered "No Fly Zone" Michigan hat lends credence that he might the guy I'm looking for.
...I just hope he's actually good and can keep his nose clean off the field.
After watching his UA highlight tape several times, there are a few very positive things I take from it:
1) He might have more fun playing football than anyone else. He was excited and smiling throughout that entire clip. I don't necessarily like him acting like such a showboat but he definitely enjoys making big plays on the field and wants to celebrate it.
2) He knows he has a lot to learn. In that video he talks about many of the guys on the opposing team being talented future D1 athletes and says something to the effect "I can learn a lot from playing these guys." To me, this says he knows he's got a ways to go before being the best.
Like you say, if he can eventually (which nowadays means by the third game of his career) become an impact player and keep his nose clean (which I am confident will happen, since he is leaving the state of Florida to get away from his troubled past), I am all for having a guy like him on the team. O LET DO IT!
