Went low...dirty play.
October 2nd, 2016 at 7:09 PM ^
Well when no one is aloud to go high anymore you kind of have to go somewhere when you are a DB who weighs 190lbs vs a Tackle tipping the scales at 315lbs.
Given the disparity between the two players I think this is just something that happens. Hopefully He can rehab and come back within a year.
I hate to say it but more of these kinds of injuries will happen now because no one can hit anywhere above the waist anymore without being ejected.

Ugh. OL was just starting to hit its stride. Depth is a problem.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:06 PM ^
It'll be a problem for another year yet, too... Unfortunately it's the position group that takes the longest to fix with recruiting/development.
Another year for Speight and O'Korn plus Peters arrival off of a RS year makes me feel somewhat optimistic for QB, but the OL will still be a work in progress with three starters leaving.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:28 PM ^
Quite possibly 4. With 3 years starting experience, size and versatility, Mason Cole could be a candidate to leave early.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:57 PM ^
"Mason Cole could be a candidate to leave early."
After one year at a new position plus he didn't redshirt? Well he better have a great combine.
October 1st, 2016 at 9:22 PM ^
for a prospect's stock. It's a myth and always has been.
October 2nd, 2016 at 11:49 AM ^
Tell that to Leonard Floyd or Carson Wentz or Shea McClellin or a host of other players who get drafted higher than projected before combine, after hype at combine. Pretty asinine comment, considering the NFL deems it a hugely important place to compare players at same positions, face to face.
October 2nd, 2016 at 9:03 AM ^
Mason Cole is too small, needs another year...amiright?
October 1st, 2016 at 9:55 PM ^
Doubtful, OL who leave after three years need to be Orlando Pace level physical prodigies. Cole leaving early is a crazy level worry.

And one game too far along to take a RS year... Bummer. I think the team can absorb the loss, at least against everyone not named OSU. But it really stinks for Newsome.
October 1st, 2016 at 7:48 PM ^
I actually thought Bushell-Beaty settled in relatively neatly.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:48 PM ^
Minus the 15 holding penalties.
October 1st, 2016 at 11:20 PM ^
I'm not blaming him. I'd have had at least that many.
October 2nd, 2016 at 8:13 AM ^
"too many lined up in the backfield" penalties as well. he was lining up to far off the LOS, cheating back to get a step on the outside rusher.
October 1st, 2016 at 7:50 PM ^
After seeing a game of JBB, I would say Newsome was the most underrated player on offense.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:47 PM ^
Maybe Bredeson will practice at tackle and be ready once we play a real team
October 1st, 2016 at 9:52 PM ^
Newsome may need to take a redshirt next year, linemen take a while to come back from knee injuries and that one looked bad. Poor guy!

Not good news, but injuries happen. Next man up
October 2nd, 2016 at 9:11 AM ^
You do realize we aren't deep at OL or are you refering to putting the kicker in?
October 2nd, 2016 at 11:54 AM ^
I think the realization is subjective, first. I also think the saying means that a good team cannot dwell on the injuries and that the team has to adjust. Our line is good enough, depth wise, to adjust. JBB, Bredeson, Kugler: what they lack in experience will hurt, but they still have talent. These players have had two years under Drevno, and he knows how to coach the line.
October 1st, 2016 at 7:49 PM ^
Well crap
October 1st, 2016 at 7:53 PM ^
Well, I hope Harbaugh is wrong in this instance. Please be wrong coach.
October 1st, 2016 at 9:01 PM ^
If you watch the replay his knee bent the wrong way . . . we'll see him next in the spring game.
October 1st, 2016 at 10:57 PM ^
I noticed that. It hurt me just watching it...
October 1st, 2016 at 7:54 PM ^
That's such a shame. Also someone want to tell Carl Grapentine that Grant Mason graduated 10 years ago? Last week he called Mason Cole Grant Mason and this week he called Grant Newesome Grant Mason.
October 1st, 2016 at 7:56 PM ^
Probably more like 15 years ago. I'm not sure Grant Mason is the right shape to play left tackle.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:02 PM ^
No, more like ten
October 1st, 2016 at 7:55 PM ^
this sucks. Guy goes from being the biggest question mark on the oline to a strength with a bright future..and now probably lost for the year. WTF the only injuries we get are season ending it seems, we can't catch a break.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:03 PM ^
Injuries happen to every team. It's the war of attrition. That's why it's important to recruit at a high level to make sure you have quality depth. Obviously there will be a drop off but I think JBB can be solid once he settles in with the rest of the line. Hopefully it's nothing long term, remember, nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Yep it's all about depth. The goal is adding talented class upon talented class to the most competitive possible atmosphere where development and excellence are expected on daily basis...a machine.
All 85 matter. Its extremely tough (and obviously doesn't always work out) but next man up isn't just some cheesy mantra...it's the MO of elite programs. I don't think M is quite there yet but hopefully they prove doubters wrong (and, if necessary, 76 or 74 or whoever steps up and gets it done)
October 1st, 2016 at 8:45 PM ^
We've only had two season-ending injuries (if Newsome is fact a season ending injury). Taco, Mone, Lewis, Furbush, and probably some others I'm forgetting have all come back from injury so far. If anything, Michigan had been pretty fortunate on the injury front.

October 1st, 2016 at 7:59 PM ^
Newsome was better. You could see by the drop off to JBB that he was really playing well. If JBB continues to struggle you might see him again.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:42 PM ^
didn't play that bad man. he stepped up!
October 1st, 2016 at 9:13 PM ^
maybe they'll kick Braden to tackle
October 1st, 2016 at 8:31 PM ^
Bredeson* was beat out by Newsome and as far as I've heard has been strictly practicing at guard since. Probably wasn't ready to go in at LT with no game prep.
October 1st, 2016 at 7:55 PM ^
Hopefully nothing serious but I thought JBB looked decent at times. Obviously won't be as good as Newsome but he looks like he could settle in nicely if that's what it comes down to.

Fuck. That will suck if he is done for the year, definite drop off when he left.
October 2nd, 2016 at 11:58 AM ^
JBB has talent, and if he starts I would not be surprised to see him cut down on mistakes. One of his mistakes was the hold on the well-timed blitzing backer. I also won't be surprised if Braden moves out to LT and Bredeson goes to LG.
October 1st, 2016 at 7:56 PM ^
I'm not as sour on JBB as everyone else. He obviously wasn't perfect by any means, but with him in there we were still able to move the ball on the ground and I thought he looked decent in pass pro. He also got thrown in there with no prep against a really tough D.
I'd prefer that Newsome's injury isn't too bad and he comes back soon, but if it is long term, think we'll be okay. Another injury might be too much to handle, but just this one should be fine. None of the DLs we face besides OSU and MSU (and that's mainly because #respekt) scare me too much so he'll have time to grow and get real game reps.
Also this could be very helpful for nex year. If he plays well that's another OL spot locked down for next year.
October 1st, 2016 at 7:57 PM ^
Well that really really sucks.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:02 PM ^
Considering we'd not seen him at all, I believe, this season before today, I did think Bushell-Beatty settled in well enough after a rocky first couple series, but any extended time out for Newsome definitely hurts - hopefully, the MRI is not as bad as it looked on the field. As others have said, this is one position unit where depth is problematic if we have to reach deep into it.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:04 PM ^
We've got time to hopefully get the right line combo up to speed before Sparty.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:07 PM ^
That's too bad. I hope he'll be back for next season. JBB looked ok today and has some games to get better. One nice thing is that JBB will get a lot of experience to be our starter next year.
October 1st, 2016 at 8:08 PM ^
That knee bent in a way it shouldn't
