Meta: When will the site allow embedded video in an OP again?

Submitted by mGrowOld on

For a LONG time now it has been impossible to embed videos in an original post.  The two, no make that three now four most recent posts under this one, for example, all tried (and failed) to do so and the OPs think they're doing someting wrong which they're not.

Any plans to fix this little problem anytime soon?

I found a convertor which rolls back the YouTube HTML embed codes a few versions and it looks like it worked above. Let me know if you see it, folks.

Also, enjoy the song, for it is a cool song.

Well, first you need this link sadly - LINK

It's easy to use though - paste the YouTube link into the top box, adjust to 400 pixels so it fits into the MGoBlog world and then hit "Generate". Use the "Standard defnition" code.

It should function as a workaround for the time being.

When I was at Michigan we accessed the nascent web using NCSA Mosaic, before Netscape was even a thing. I saw several websites back then that looked and worked better than 2016 mgoblog.

I love the site, so I take it as "charming", but man would it be great if we just had a recent version of Invision Power Board to DISCUSS on.

Here is the reality for everyone. This site is created by Mr. Cook and ran by his staff for the front page content and the revenue potential it may bring. Everything else is expense content. Low hanging fruit in the message areas are a low priority. The lack of posting in a message OP with an embed detracts from how much additional income? What is his ROI?

Right. There's a lot more traffic on the board.

But I think the above poster is saying, "How much more traffic would it generate if somebody can embed in the OP, as opposed to embedding the video in the first comment or just linking to it?"

If the lack of embedding in the OP isn't discouraging traffic, then there's no incentive for Brian to fix it, except for the mild annoyance of having people ask questions about it.

a) I get that, but I have a hard time believing it's a difficult fix. I mean, I'm not capable of doing it, but I don't think it would take a rocket surgeon.

b) Perhaps the underlying question/motivation might be the long-awaited upgrades to the site. IIRC, there was supposed to be an overhaul before the 2015 season, and then it was suggested an overhaul would occur before the 2016 season began. Presumably, the embed issue would be fixed with the overall site upgrade.

I'm not complaining. I know how tough and frustrating it can be to upgrade my own site. I'm just saying that people's expectations may have legitimately been set at a certain level, and now some might be wondering what the holdup is.

Here is the reality.  I just offered to write 10 lines of javascript to fix it for free....  So his "ROI" is exactly the same as his "I".  However ROI can not only be judged on monetary values when it comes to website users.  Ease of use would be greatley increased, making it easier for more users to post interesting and engaging articles.  It would also keep people from leaving his site, because nobody sets the target to "_blank" when they post a link to open a new tab, instead his users go to YouTube and stand a very high chance of getting distracted and not returning to view more articles or forum posts.

Don't piss off the hamsters during the season or they'll take their wheel and go home and we'll all be mogoblogless.

Besides, you can just channel your inner Tim Berners-Lee and hand-code yer own damn fancy-dancy YooToob embeddens.

I wish I could give you a million up votes for using a Devo video .  I wish everyone was familiar with their work beyond Whip it . They have so many great songs .

Saw them in concert two years ago. The warmed up for and TOTALLY upstaged Debbie Harry/Blondie. Far better, having more fun, engaged the audience more. Would see them again any time. I even got a piece of a yellow painter suit, though the Energy Domes at the merch table were WILDLY overpriced.

Since this thread has already turned to a shit show I hope it's ok to ask this. Don't want to start a new thread. Heading up for my annual trip and normally we tailgate but I'm meeting up with some people so we may be bar hopping a bit more than normal. Are there a few bars/areas we should definitely hit? I know every says to stay off main. I usually end up there anyway. Maybe a better question is where should we not go? Thanks for any info and sorry for the hijack. I figured this was better than a new thread.

Well Brian did mention back in the summer they were looking to upgrade the site I believe. Long overdue because honestly the look and functionality of the site is rather inexcusable for 2016. The blog content is great but everything else desperately needs an upgrade.

The content here is generally 11 out of 10. But usability? Gack. I've been here years now and can't figure out how to get to page 2 of forum posts. I had to make a cheat sheet of HTML for posting plain jpegs. On busy days the home page shows a Cloudflare static version.

Again, content is king and MGoBrian and Co. have that nailed, but I also don't think it's ridiculous for users of the site, who generate a lot of content in comments and forum posts (which in turn generate ad impressions) to wish for things that most other sites sorted out 10 years ago.
