Hiring Les Miles as an analyst
Les is almost certainly out of a job after this season unless he can somehow beat Alabama. Do you think Harbaugh hires him to his staff? He probably wouldn't get another head coaching job due to his age and he has ties to Michigan. He has always recruited well and could Harbaugh recruit the deep south due to his established relationships there.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:20 AM ^
On a list of things that won't happen, that's pretty high up.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:34 AM ^
Amen. I think Harbaugh would be wise to stay away from the Hatter. Especially if all the Moeller's wife stuff is true. Let sleeping dogs lie.
September 25th, 2016 at 10:48 AM ^
People need to let that rumor die. It's almost certainly unfounded but the internet echo chamber keeps reviving it.
There are some other allegations about Miles that may have legs, but they're about more mundane matters like possible NCAA improprieties.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:23 AM ^
Steve Spurrier was 60 when he got the South Carolina job. You don't think a team like Kentucky would hire him in an instant? He'll more than likely get another coaching job.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:26 AM ^
Spurrier also left the college ranks still considered as an elite college coach.
Is Miles still considered that after his last couple years, at his age, and his seeming refusal to address his offensive staff?

has a tenth of Miles' resume, and the same refusal to address his offensive staff, and he got a head coaching job less than a year after he got fired. Miles has a national championship ring and a pretty good recruiting pedigree. Kentucky, Baylor, and possibly Mississippi State will be open this year. A bunch of other mid level jobs will become available. Someone will take a chance on him.
September 25th, 2016 at 3:05 AM ^
Kentucky isnt going to make a change, they just gave Stoops that big contract with a Ferentz like buyout.
Why is Baylor going to be looking right now? Theyre currently 4-0 and favs to win the conference and are probably the Big 12's last hope at a playoff team.
And I highly doubt Les takes a mid major job after being at LSU for so long. I wouldnt be surprised if he did in fact retire.
And unless Mullen leaves on his own, Miss St isnt going to fire him. Theyve had 3 10 win seasons since 1940, and Mullen has one of them just two years ago and just sent a QB to the NFL thats currently starting.

You know what cracks me up is that everyone crows about how great the SEC is. Obviously Saban is god at bama but in his tenure the second best coach in the SEC has been Miles hands down. Is he struggling sure but it is strange the second best coach (long term) in the best conference is now not hirable? Strange.

2011 was a long time ago. His teams haven't been very good since that rematch with Alabama in the NC game.
September 25th, 2016 at 6:02 AM ^
Miles would be leaving LSU as a way more competitive program than the way Spurrier left SCar

Spurrier got tired of losing and quit on his team in the middle of the year. IMO he is a quitter.
September 25th, 2016 at 8:41 AM ^
Or Penn State, there is some serious talk about replacing Franklin with Miles on PSU blogs.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:32 AM ^
What could possibly go wrong?
September 25th, 2016 at 10:37 AM ^
Les can recruit like a mad man and if he could hire a halfway decent OC he could turn PSU back into a power in short order.
Yesterday's game would have gone a lot differently with Miles and Aranda coaching PSU's defense.
That said, I don't think Les would coach any B1G team that isn't Michigan. Like him or not, he does bleed Cajun flavored maize and blue.
September 25th, 2016 at 11:57 AM ^
He's had years to hire a decent OC. Why would going to psu cause that to change?
September 25th, 2016 at 2:38 PM ^
Aranda following him to Penn State if that were to happen. He's gonna get paid.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:30 AM ^
Assistant of clock management?
September 25th, 2016 at 6:47 AM ^
Pure gold, Jerry
September 25th, 2016 at 8:04 AM ^
NOOOOOOoooooooo!!!!!
September 25th, 2016 at 2:31 AM ^
If Miles can give up the dream of being the highest-paid coach +$1000, he could do something really Mike Leach-esque out there.
You have to think that guy is sitting on a plane tonight thinking about how it all went wrong...
September 25th, 2016 at 2:31 AM ^
Les should get a nice beach house and call it a day.
Although I am not 100% against him as an assistant. I think he would be good. Up to him though.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:33 AM ^
Lots of peeps haven't much use for him, including one man whose name I won't mention, but his initials are Lloyd Carr.
September 25th, 2016 at 3:01 AM ^
A man with the initials of lloyd carr had no use for a man with the initials jim mfin harbaugh either. But he happens to be here..
And if things seem as they appear, a man with the initials jim mfin harbaugh seems to get whatever he wants lately.
So if im betting. If the guy with the initials jim mfin harbaugh wants les miles as an analyst, the guy with the initials lloyd card will sit at home and be salty about it.
September 25th, 2016 at 8:28 AM ^
I think you read the lay of the land improperly if you think Carr didn't want Harbaugh here.
September 25th, 2016 at 10:33 AM ^
the 1st time around he seemed pretty cold to the idea....the second time around I think he'd figured out it was time to do whatever it took to get the program back in the right direction.
September 25th, 2016 at 11:39 AM ^
Wow! I never knew someone with 9 initials had that much influence at Michigan.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:47 AM ^
Just remind him what the grass in Michigan tastes like and he might be a cheap date too
September 25th, 2016 at 3:03 AM ^
Don't analysts basically study film all day everyday? Does that really seem like Les Miles' forte?
September 25th, 2016 at 7:54 AM ^
You guys are cold, man.
September 25th, 2016 at 8:41 AM ^
I'd imagine he would have plenty of value as an advisor and a recruiter. I'd let him work on whatever he wanted; scouting, watching film, watching practice.
I expect to see him working on TV next year. Seems like a good fit.
September 25th, 2016 at 8:58 AM ^
Nothing like a having someone represent the programs whose most recent accomplishment was to get fired. Wouldn't you think RBs would flock to him after the stellar job with Fournette?
September 25th, 2016 at 9:41 AM ^
2) He has a lot of good connections with HS coaches and recruits.
3) He's not going to be coaching here. No recruit is coming to play for him. He would be selling recruits on playing for our staff and on Michigan.
4) He would be getting paid by LSU with us kicking in a token amount.
I think it would be a no brainer to hire him as an analyst. I expect to see him on ESPN or FS1 instead.
September 25th, 2016 at 10:21 AM ^
he would be an awesome recruiter, but he'll either retire, tack a year off and then go coach, or go right back into coaching
October 8th, 2016 at 3:46 AM ^
Bc jim harbaugh wasnt fired by the tire fire niners.. and recruits have run from him..
And bc jedd fisch wasnt fired by the jacksonville, bottom of the nfl, jags..
And hes done a horrible job here too..
September 25th, 2016 at 9:34 AM ^
What's Miles going to tell Harbaugh, Brown, and Drevno that they don't already know?
September 25th, 2016 at 10:07 AM ^
I wouldn't dismiss Miles' knowledge of the game..
By the same logic, what could our other analysts, say Devin Bush Sr, tell Don Brown and Greg Mattison that they don't already know?
October 8th, 2016 at 3:50 AM ^
Drevno took a hc job. And fisch, or Wheatley becomes oc.. les is probably a mattison level hire as an ol coach if he wants he job..
September 25th, 2016 at 10:03 AM ^
But can 'analysts' recruit? I thought only official coaches could have contact with recruits. I guess he could help identify recruits, but is that really his strong suit n recruiting?
September 25th, 2016 at 10:09 AM ^
but they definitely can do a lot of recruiting. Look at Chris Partridge last year or Tony Tuioti now.
September 25th, 2016 at 11:09 AM ^
As an analyst he couldn't directly contact recruits. He could meet some on campus if they decide to visit.
I don't see a particular reason for Harbaugh to do this unless he just wants to give Les a soft landing. He could possibly help with Louisiana recruiting, but in general, Jim wants to hire younger, hungrier guys who want to climb the ladder.
September 25th, 2016 at 11:30 AM ^
analysts. Erik Campbell is certainly a veteran coach and there's no limit on how many support staff we can have. I'm not saying this is at all likely, but Michigan would just be a short term stop for Miles. He get's to spend a year in Ann Arbor before moving on the another HC job.
I'd expect him to do that in broadcasting, but maybe that's not what he wants.
September 25th, 2016 at 3:07 AM ^
LSU should be stuck with Les forever. I hope there's some clause buried deep in his contract that if Michigan offers him a position that his head coaching contract is automatically extended for 10 years. Their old and new AD's wanted him so badly. Now? Seriously, fuck LSU. Also, fuck Kirk herbstreit.
September 25th, 2016 at 3:09 AM ^
I'm with you that he can suck a fat one, but is there a specific reason for calling him out on this situation ?
September 25th, 2016 at 3:28 AM ^
he just loves thinking about Herbstreit late at night.
September 25th, 2016 at 3:58 AM ^
True. It's 4AM and I'm thinking about Herbie...
September 25th, 2016 at 3:40 AM ^
Herbstreit was a big player on us not getting Les. Instead of reporting the news he helped make it.

I'm thankful for Herbstreit's help.
September 25th, 2016 at 11:17 AM ^
Bacon, Rice, and Grits---looks like a nice Sunday brunch in the making!
September 25th, 2016 at 3:54 AM ^
Between Herbie calling Miles to Michigan, LSU extending Miles contract, and Bill Martin on the yacht, there was a lot of bad press at the time for Michigan. Obviously there was more going on, but it really made us look bad at the time and LSU got their man so to speak. Fast forward to now and, I just want LSU to be saddled with Les for the foreseeable future.
September 25th, 2016 at 11:12 AM ^
Look at it this way: if we'd hired Miles in 2007 he'd still be here, so we'd have no Harbaugh now.
Would Les have been better than RR/Hoke? Most likely. Better than Harbaugh? Uh, no.
