OT: Anyone own a domain name?
Does anyone own a good domain name that they are currently using or itend to use in the future? I have one that I want to use but can't decide what to do with it. I would appreciate some suggestions.
www.cracksmacker.com
godaddy.com im still working out the kinks
Umm, I think Brian might own one.
It's kind of an odd question though... Why would you buy the domain cracksmacker.com if you didn't have a plan for it?
What were your intentions when you bought it?
I could see why you'd buy something like sex.com, for obvious reasons, but what does "cracksmacker" even mean? It's not like very many people are going to suddenly wake up one day, and think, "Ooh, I wonder if anyone's bought the name 'cracksmacker.com' and if so, what it is!" and go type it into their browser. (Like they would with sex.com)
Maybe someone will have some genius idea for you, but I really don't know what you're expecting to get here...
Damn it, beat me to it. I agree, typing in sex.com or cool.com might be a fun thing to do at work (maybe not the sex.com one), but I'd never put cracksmacker.com into a browser by chance.
nothing gets a recruiter to notice you better than a catchy personal website name
Someone better jump on www.gardner4heisman.com before it's too late.
Another idea...
Buy: 4heisman.com
And then you can set up unlimited subdomains (free) for each player.
So, gardner.4heisman.com
That makes the most sense economically, but then you look like a pseudo-believer.
If you spring for the whole domain, then no one can question your faith when he becomes the first 3-time Heisman winner.
did you just post this so everyone would know you own a weird domain name? I really don't understand...
I just bought a brand new BMW M5. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to look the coolest while driving it?
/sarcasm
Unfortunately, that's not possible. The best you can do is looking like only half a total tool while you drive it.
Cracksmacker will attract buckeyes like flies.
I am surprised by the lack of freepboycott.com and firemikerosenberg.com suggestions.
Pretty limited what you can do with that name? Sell crack? Sell Smacks cereal?
Sounds like a porn site in the making. I hear those do well on this internet thing.
What is this internet you speak of? Oh, I get it now. Thanks, former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens.

Me and my buddies bought www.boozecalculator.com.
While drunk, we had this great idea that our website would keep track of beer prices around Ann Arbor, and that college kids would go to our site to find the best deals on campus that night. We also thought it would have some calculator function that would divvy up the prices of the booze order that would help in everyone paying the kid with the fake ID.
Man, the brilliance of boozecalculator.com has been negated by our lack of any web design experience. But whenever we're drinking, we always bring the [admittedly flawed] idea back up.
Is it sad that our only accomplishment so far has been the logo?
Hahaha!!
That is awesome.
And also, you're sitting on a goldmine here. I'm dead serious about this... A site like that would be incredibly easy to get some income out of. Maybe not enough for you to retire in your early 20's, but, you could put some serious extra spending money in your pocket with only a little effort to monetize the site.
Haha well, we have the name/logo down, and we've already got a sorority to wear our yet-to-be-designed shirts around campus. The actual work part, though, we haven't touched.
I don't actually know if there's any real potential in it. But it sounds great when you're drunk.
EDIT: if any web designer is currently drunk and reading this, and you want to get in on this horrible yet awesome idea, feel free to join the team. I can't imagine ever seeing a single dime from boozecalculator.com, but goddamn it's a fun URL to say out out loud.
(EDIT: This was supposed to be a reply to Flood's post above this... hit the wrong 'reply' button.)
Your t-shirt design is already done. Just throw that logo you have there - whith is great by the way - on a t-shirt and get the sororities wearing it. Get some frats too.
Find a printer to print them up cheap... get 2 versions... the kind for the girls with, I can't remember what they're called... but like those really short sleeves that just cover the shoulder, and a regular cut for guys.
Here's what you do. Get a bunch printed up. Sell them for $10 and donate any profits to a charity. Like the Mott children's hospital or something (That seems to be a popular one at U-M). Frat and sorority kids love buying t-shirts, and if they can do it with a community service/charity tie in, even better. And now you have a bunch of walking billboards advertising for your site. Everyone wins.
Start a Facebook group for your page and invite everyone you know... more free advertising using a medium that college kids are already plugged into.
Then, create a community on your site... some sort of message board or whatever where people can post about great places to drink in Ann Arbor, drink deals, etc.
Once you creat community and get traffic coming to the site, you start selling advertising.
I think a great business model is one where you facilitate connection between 2 groups that need each other. This is what you can do. College students want cool places to drink cheap booze at. Bars want booze thirsty college students frequenting their establishments. You serve are a connector between the 2. If you demonstrate you have the traffic, the bars will pay for access to your audience, it's that simple.
You could even go the next step and incorporate a bar/club/party promoting aspect to it... host events at local bars... like, "80's night at 'xyz bar' sponsored by boozecalculator.com"... If you bring the party, (i.e. paying customers) bar owners will pay you.... or at least set you and your friends up with the VIP treatment, bottle service, etc.
All I'm saying is there's serious potential for epic win here.
As far as the web development aspect.... Dude you're a U of M student!! I guarantee you there are thousands of kids on the U-M campus that are very web savvy, and that you'd be able to find a few that'd be willing to help you out.
You're all welcome.
