Recruiting mailbag questions for Monday

Submitted by Steve Lorenz on

Hey guys,

Hit me up with your questions for next Monday's mailbag.

There were some good questions remaining in last week's, so I may answer a couple of those still. I am keeping track of all questions asked in each of these so I'll keep picking out the best ones, even if they're from past board posts.

What do you make of the recent offers of lesser-rated CBs in the last week or so? At this point optimism seems low on Darnay Holmes. Does it have any bearing on where we stand with any other CB targets like Ambry Thomas?

Why does Sparty struggle to put together higher-ranked classes despite their run of success, and what is their ceiling another 1-2 years down the road when Harbaugh has fully re-established the winning tradition here?

Has Michigan changed it's recruiting strategy at all with the change from Partridge to Bush? Is Biff Poggi playing an active role in recruiting evaluation? (you know, asking that last question for a friend...in the media).

I saw the offer to a cornerback who plays with Tarik Black as well. He wasn't rated very high. My question is why aren't we offering Donovan Johnson from Cass Tech? He's ranked higher, he has speed as evidenced in THE OPEN where he almost won the fastest player, He REALLY wants to go to Michigan, He's teammates with two players that we highly covet in Kelly-Powell and Peoples-Jones (package deal)., Did I mention he was invited to THE OPEN and the other wasn't, which says something about what others think about him. Why are we offering a kid ranked around 1500 to sway Black when Johnson could help bring in truly elite players that we definitely want more.

I don't know who this CB teammate it you're referring to, but just because one guy went to the opening and another didn't doesn't mean a ton, really. It means Donovan Johnson either went to camps this other guy didn't or shows better in a camp setting. Considering Johnson is small and fast, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the latter. How big is this other recruit? I read somewhere that size was a reason for not offering Donovan Johnson. EDIT: just looked him up and Brandon Sebastian is 6'1". So that may play a role here. Lastly, keep in mind that recruits in places like CT are often overlooked.

Terry Richardson was an All American recruit and Stribling/Clark were not. So let's also not take the recruiting stuff as gospel either.

If we have the kind of season most of us are hoping for, do you see us recruiting on the same level as OSU and Bama next seasons? If not, what would it take for M to have a no. 1 class?
