Steve Lorenz: Mailbag questions
Hey guys,
After talking to Ace and Brian for the last few weeks about it, we agreed on me coming on to do a weekly mailbag on Michigan recruiting.
I believe the plan will be to run it on Tuesdays. I am assuming the MGoAudience may have some different style recruiting questions they want to know about and I think it will be fun to cover some different angles on the topic.
My plan is to take five-ish questions each week with some fleshed out answers for you guys to chew on. Anything recruiting related is really open game IMO, so have at it and I'll have something ready for Tuesday.

We're officially back!

Now that the rest of CFB has seen what Harbaugh can do with a simple recruiting calendar event such as National Signing Day, many of the other majors will now be rushing to do their own productions. How does the program plan to follow up on last year's successful event?
September 8th, 2016 at 5:23 PM ^
We get five questions an THAT'S the one you pick?
September 8th, 2016 at 5:45 PM ^
It's a fair question - recruiting oriented and involves significant exposure (and is pertinent to all of our incoming recruits, not just one or two guys). This is UM setting (another) trend in CFB which will be picked up by others for certain.
September 8th, 2016 at 6:04 PM ^
Fair question, but maybe let's hold that one for after bowl season...
But Michael Jordan.
September 8th, 2016 at 5:51 PM ^
Got something better or are you just being an ass?
September 8th, 2016 at 6:26 PM ^
I don't think that's the kind of question you ask in September.
September 8th, 2016 at 6:44 PM ^
Shouldn't be asking any recruiting questions until we beat OSU and MSU.
But thanks anyway Steve. See you in November.

Has Harbaugh historically recruited kickers and punters, and if so who is he looking at? We know about last year's sleepover, so he does have some precedence.
September 8th, 2016 at 4:42 PM ^
What were the incentives (and from whom) that Jim Hackett mentioned Gary receiving in his recruitment?
September 8th, 2016 at 5:00 PM ^
Cutting straight through to the good stuff.
September 8th, 2016 at 6:05 PM ^
To be precise, Gary was OFFERED incentives. I seriously doubt he ever actually RECEIVED any alleged incentives.
September 8th, 2016 at 8:11 PM ^
He must be a better Michigan man than me. I would have taken everything they gave me and their coeds too...
September 9th, 2016 at 10:13 AM ^
Well, you know, it's easier to be good if you're there with your mom... ;)

Without getting into any names....what is the most scandelous recurting story you can't really repeat....but maybe could give some vague details about (women, cash, gifts, etc).

I can PM you some stuff on Shea Patterson.
September 8th, 2016 at 4:57 PM ^
Or you could email it to the Ole Miss compliance department.

Better would be his office space in the basement...

I had a kid at work the other day give me the most sincere compliment on our stapler. It's your basic blue stapler. This may be his future.

about Shea Patterson?
September 8th, 2016 at 5:26 PM ^
Long story short, family is slimy as they come. NW Ohio people might remember when his older brother, Sean, was the QB for SJJ in Toledo. Basically they were demanding a coaching position for his older brother and cash for his dad to relocate to Biloxi. Older brother went from GA at Arizona, to Offensive Quality Control at LSU, to Associate Director of Recruiting at Ole Miss, all at the time coincidentally that Shea was committed to each program. Quite the fast riser, eh? Shea was also being recruited through dead periods via Xbox live and received many gifts along the way.
September 8th, 2016 at 6:04 PM ^
Xbox live, that's a new one
September 8th, 2016 at 6:11 PM ^
Actually, ISIS/Al Qaeda cells supposedly used PS4 and the PSN to coordinate the Bataclan/Paris attacks.
Supposedly, you can use VOIP or communicate in-game (like CoD), with almost complete anonymity.

Please tell me they were playing counterstrike on Xbox live

We have PMs on mgoblog?
September 8th, 2016 at 5:25 PM ^
Yeah it's "public message"
September 8th, 2016 at 10:03 PM ^
We certainly have PMS on mgoblog.
September 8th, 2016 at 6:49 PM ^
I once heard that Artavis Scott (remember when he was a strong Michigan lean and then suddenly committed to Clemson?) once received a few pairs of Jordans, a gold necklace, and some diamond earrings (if I remember right) on his visit to Clemson, and that's what prompted him to commit.

Could you maybe give a best case and worst case scenario with how our class could turn out? (Personally best case for me is when we steal a bunch of guys from PSU like last year lol)
September 8th, 2016 at 8:47 PM ^
This year it will be stealing from Alabama. Harris and Leatherwood, come on down.

How are jersey sales in Ohio?
September 8th, 2016 at 4:45 PM ^
Is Biff Poggi doing recruit analyses for us ? Or maybe opponent analyses? What is he doing?
September 8th, 2016 at 4:59 PM ^
in the press conferences? I swear whoever that is, is fishing for some sort of NCAA violation. He even asks the players if he is giving them any hands on Coaching.
September 8th, 2016 at 5:15 PM ^
Or he's trying to do a support staff puff piece and can't get the damn quote he wants.
In a vacuum, I'd lean towards what you posted as the motivation. Reading this lazy-ass press gaggle week in and week out, investigative reporting seems unlikely.
September 8th, 2016 at 6:58 PM ^
I'd lean towards fishing for something shady. There's really no reason to go through that much effort for a puff piece. And no disrespect to Biff, but who really cares? And if no one really cares, why try and go around the proper channels and spend weeks/months on fishing for quotes about him? You don't need that many quotes for a puff piece.
September 8th, 2016 at 7:23 PM ^
I doubt that. Whoever it is would have to have a great burning interest in support staff to keep doggedly pursuing this week after week, both with coaches and players. I had the same thought about fishing for a violation, especially given the way Harbaugh has shut him down.
September 8th, 2016 at 7:51 PM ^
Sorry to cause a problem, and I wasn't aware of the reporter. I was curious if we would hire a high school coach and have have peruse data on potential recruits, notably OL, so our coaches didnt have to do the legwork. his name came up that we hired him and his name came up recently and was unclear.
September 8th, 2016 at 8:37 PM ^
The only problem that I see is the reporter, whoever it is...
September 8th, 2016 at 10:25 PM ^
Very well could be fishing but I wouldn't say "doggedly persuing" because a guy spent all of 20 seconds over two weeks asking.
I would be surprised if a reporter pursuing an investigative story would ask that question in a presser. You want to get the story first, so why tip off other reporters? Also seems like Devin Bush Sr. would come up since we signed multiple Flanagan kids including his son.
September 9th, 2016 at 7:57 AM ^
It has been asked since summer, not just the past two weeks.
September 9th, 2016 at 9:08 AM ^
I remember questions when his hire was announced but guess I missed that.
If it's been an ongoing open forum question that long then I really don't see how it's a gotcha piece for the scoop reason above. Then again, doesn't really make sense for a lazy story either. Weird.
