Steve Lorenz: Mailbag questions

Submitted by Steve Lorenz on

Hey guys,

After talking to Ace and Brian for the last few weeks about it, we agreed on me coming on to do a weekly mailbag on Michigan recruiting.

I believe the plan will be to run it on Tuesdays. I am assuming the MGoAudience may have some different style recruiting questions they want to know about and I think it will be fun to cover some different angles on the topic.

My plan is to take five-ish questions each week with some fleshed out answers for you guys to chew on. Anything recruiting related is really open game IMO, so have at it and I'll have something ready for Tuesday.

Now that the rest of CFB has seen what Harbaugh can do with a simple recruiting calendar event such as National Signing Day, many of the other majors will now be rushing to do their own productions.  How does the program plan to follow up on last year's successful event?

Has Harbaugh historically recruited kickers and punters, and if so who is he looking at?  We know about last year's sleepover, so he does have some precedence.

Without getting into any names....what is the most scandelous recurting story you can't really repeat....but maybe could give some vague details about (women, cash, gifts, etc).

Long story short, family is slimy as they come. NW Ohio people might remember when his older brother, Sean, was the QB for SJJ in Toledo. Basically they were demanding a coaching position for his older brother and cash for his dad to relocate to Biloxi. Older brother went from GA at Arizona, to Offensive Quality Control at LSU, to Associate Director of Recruiting at Ole Miss, all at the time coincidentally that Shea was committed to each program. Quite the fast riser, eh? Shea was also being recruited through dead periods via Xbox live and received many gifts along the way.

I once heard that Artavis Scott (remember when he was a strong Michigan lean and then suddenly committed to Clemson?) once received a few pairs of Jordans, a gold necklace, and some diamond earrings (if I remember right) on his visit to Clemson, and that's what prompted him to commit.

Could you maybe give a best case and worst case scenario with how our class could turn out? (Personally best case for me is when we steal a bunch of guys from PSU like last year lol)

I'd lean towards fishing for something shady.  There's really no reason to go through that much effort for a puff piece.  And no disrespect to Biff, but who really cares?  And if no one really cares, why try and go around the proper channels and spend weeks/months on fishing for quotes about him?  You don't need that many quotes for a puff piece.

I doubt that. Whoever it is would have to have a great burning interest in support staff to keep doggedly pursuing this week after week, both with coaches and players. I had the same thought about fishing for a violation, especially given the way Harbaugh has shut him down.

Sorry to cause a problem, and I wasn't aware of the reporter. I was curious if we would hire a high school coach and have have peruse data on potential recruits, notably OL, so our coaches didnt have to do the legwork. his name came up that we hired him and his name came up recently and was unclear.

Very well could be fishing but I wouldn't say "doggedly persuing" because a guy spent all of 20 seconds over two weeks asking.

I would be surprised if a reporter pursuing an investigative story would ask that question in a presser. You want to get the story first, so why tip off other reporters? Also seems like Devin Bush Sr. would come up since we signed multiple Flanagan kids including his son.

I remember questions when his hire was announced but guess I missed that.

If it's been an ongoing open forum question that long then I really don't see how it's a gotcha piece for the scoop reason above. Then again, doesn't really make sense for a lazy story either. Weird.
