Injury Timelines (Positive News)

Submitted by umbig11 on

Already some good news this morning. Mone (crutches), initial return to the field was looking like week 6. That is moving up to week 5 and possibly sooner. Taco (no cast, no boot, no crutches), maybe sitting one week and at most two.

But PSU brought in a new OC with a track record of successful spread offense. If he even gets everybody pointed in the same direction, that will at least be better than whatever the hell Franklin was doing with Hackenberg.

Still not afraid of that game, but I do think everybody here is really underestimating an above-average PSU team.

PJ Fleck is looking pretty solid now eh?? Just kidding, giving you a hard time.

Yeah I dunno about them. They have been 30-24 since 2011, basically the poster child for average. If Michigan can beat them on the road in a somewhat comfortable fashion last year, I don't really see the massive threat with an improved Michigan team at home and PSU traveling for their first Big 10 road game.

issue is that many people on this blog have never seen "success" at the level that we are primed to have it, and don't understand that you still lose games even when you are a really high caliber team.  There is going to be a big target on our back going forward.  To say we should beat Penn State(true) is not the same as saying we don't "need" two of our best players on the field against them.  If they are hurt and they can't go, so beat it, but after next week we need all hands on deck for the forseeable future after that.  We do not have elite depth at this point to have such a luxury.

have more depth than we had but we don't have Alabama/FSU/OSU depth.  Not yet.  It looks to us like we do because we have had basically 4 warm bodies on the D-line in all years between 2011 and 2015, but we are down two players right now and really have about 5 left that would be solid contributors.  It's not particularly a problem yet but it is not truly elite depth.

I just don't see Penn State, even with Michigan short 2, 3 guys on the D-line being good enough to win this football game. I have confidence in the backups and the rotation that Don Brown would implement to make it work.

And you can't really compare PSU to Indiana (Bismol). Indiana has this ridiculous offense that keeps teams off their flow. Penn State, even if it's faster this year, runs a methodical offense. As long as Franklin is at the helm, that team just doesn't scare me as a fan.

No offense, Leo, but you should read up on Penn State's offense. They brought in Joe Moorhead, who was coaching 1-AA, and previously was OC at some lower level FBS schools. Hes a spread guy. They're running spread now. What you saw last year or the year before is irrelevant.

Not saying they are now Oregon. But this is a new thing. You should at least be aware.

Michigan will face up to that point in the season.  Certainly, Michigan can't look past them and the starters will have to work harder than the previous 3 games.  But, I still see us winning by at least 3 TD's.

But we've seen first-hand how it works when you take a traditional power offense and turn them into spread overnight. There are always MASSIVE growing pains. I did not know they switched their entire scheme over, I apologize for that.

And I agree.  We saw how that works.  To their credit, their QB McSorley is a dual-threat guy, so they've at least been recruiting to run this type of offense, which Michigan definitely did not.  I still think there are bumps in that road, and we get them early enough to take advantage.  Their lines are their weak spot, which is why I'm not afraid.  But it's Penn State.  They recruit the crap out of Pennsylvania and have plenty of athletes.  My general point is that this forum seems to be lumping them in with Rutgers and the like, which I feel is vastly underrating their talent.

I feel like we beat them comfortably last year in Happy Valley, but it was a 1-score game mid-way through the 4th quarter.  And they were an offensive disaster.  Any upgrade there and I'm at least paying attention.

We can outmatch just about every one of our opponents at almost every position until OSU. If having some depth issues on the D line for one game against PSU would cause us to lose then this is not as good of a team as we thought.

Fleck is fine. Young, energetic, looks the part. If he can't win the MAC, he'll continue to be comically overhyped. Beating NW doesn't change that. Good win, but Northern Illinois beat NW two years ago. I don't remember there being a parade.

Since 2011, PSU has had 3 coaches, the Sandusky scandal fallout, sanctions and scholarship reductions. None of that has anything to do with this year. Unless you think throwing out Michigan's record since 2008 makes us a bad team now.

They'll probably dress him and see how the first few series go. If there aren't other injuries, I don't think he'll be needed. More a reflection of Michigan's depth than PSU really.

would be nice to have the whole cast and crew back by Wisconsin at the latest.  It is very, very important that Gasglow stays healthy now.

They did everything in their power to lose that game. Houston does not look to be much of a QB threat. Corey Clement did OK. I still don't think they are all that special.

It was a couple of rusty teams without any form of solid offense trying to let the other team win. I see Michigan's D just completely swarming and shutting down the Wisconsin O.

Do you feel like Les is being passed by the game? I think too often coaches at big schools with big time recruits and loads of success get complacent. Les is no spring chicken, so i wonder if he isn't able to keep up with the rigors of the game? Seems last few years LSU has been there, but not BEEN THERE.

Maybe the constant Fire talk has finally wore him down and it is bleeding over to the team.

Remember 2 years ago when Joel Stave forgot how to throw, and they had to find a QB to sub in for him for a while while he figured it out?

Houston did not win that competition. The guy who beat him for the spot was moved to safety (and occasional wildcat QB) after that year (and actually made the Seahawks roster this year as a WR). Houston is not a good QB. They're an injury or two on the OL from being pretty much DOA on offense.

Sucks they're hurt but glad it's not season ending. Silver lining in it is Gary will be getting a lot more playing time than he would otherwise, which will bode well come later in the season.

Whew. Having Mone back for Wisco would be huge. I think some double Mone/Glasgow packages would be nice for that game. All of a sudden looks like a more important and difficult game that preciously going into the season.

The LSU Offense is just bad

Ya gotta love Les and he would have saved us all a ton of anguish over the past decade but when you look at our ceiling now who has it better than us?

I think Wiscy beats Sparty this year. Not quite lemon eating confident but that's my pick.

somebody please tell me what possible benefit LSU gets from doing their "straight pitch" dive plays?  If you are running a sweep or some else to the outside a pitch makes all of the sense in the world, but what possible benefit is derived from turning a straight hand-off up the middle into a "mini-pitch" where the running back gets the ball at the exact same place at the exact same time as he otherwise would?  Why make that any more complicated than it is?  That is a really odd play and from what I have seen LSU is the only team that runs that does that garbage (and it never, ever works).

1. It gives the RB an extra split second to pick a hole.

2. LSU runs a version where they get an extra blocker as the QB blocks the backside DE. Can't do that if he has to run back to hand the ball off.
