During his college career at the University of Michigan, Howard set or tied five NCAA and 12 Michigan records. As I recall, MVictors had the audio from Moeller and the staff on the sideline in the moments before this play, and you can hear Moeller - for a minute - second-guessing himself with regards to formation and a few other things, so this may very well have never happened in some other world. Glad we got this highlight, and it is also one of my favorite moments that I had the pleasure of watching in person actually.

Desmond was just one of those freak of nature talents.  His diving catches were like poetry in motion.  Half the time, it seemed like he didn't even need to dive to make the catch but he just wanted to make a TD look "prettier" for the crowd.  Double covering him didn't make a difference.  Lethal return man.

And the amazing thing is he never caught a single pass in high school because he played tailback.  Try to wrap your head around that when you see his highlights.  TV commentators were in awe of him week after week.

People won't agree with me, but Willie Heston is our best player ever. He would've won the Heisman all four years if it existed back then.

Look at his stats. He AVERAGED 18 rushing TDs per season. That would be tied for second in the modern single season stats. So 18 TDs as a freshman.

He also had a 6 TD game and a 5 TD game.

This right here is why people get so annoyed with WD. You try to show you are a better fan than everyone else by pulling out some ridiculous history to make some ridiculous argument. Heston played in the 1901-1903 teams. The point-a-minute teams. How can you consider anyone on a team that won a "game" 119-0 to be the greatest of all time? A varsity RB can score 6 TDs against a freshmen team; does that make him the greatest of all time? No disrespect to awesome Heston or Yost's teams that laid the foundation for the greatest football program ever... but let's be honest about the level of competition during that era.

Chicago, Wisconsin. Buffalo was pretty good in 1901 and we put up 128 on them.

Heston played from 1901-04. 72 TDs.

He was a great reason that we won all those games. There were some low scoring games there during that stretch.

There is an unconfirmed fact put out by the B1G records that the 1901 team gained 8,000 yards of total offense.

Howard is a gift that keeps on giving. Not only was he exciting to watch on the field but he was and still is a great ambassador for Michigan Football.

Biakabatuka should be on the list somewhere just for his [319] yards versus OSU.

Skrepanak?  Messner?

Gerald Ford probably isn't in the 25 best athletes, but being President probably gets him on ahead of Phelps who didn't play a sport for Michigan.

and what about the Steiner brothers?

Well we know Harmon and Woodson will be #1 & #2.

No Jim Abbott.

No Willie Heston.

No Harry Newman.

Ugh.

I can only speak for myself (though it appears there are many others in my camp) but I am not a hockey fan so I have no idea who played at Michigan or anywhere else for that matter. My ignorance led me to omit athletes I did not know about when voting. I don't even think I could name 15 hockey players period, let alone Michigan ones.
