Jersey number changes: Devin Bush the sole #10

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The sole survivor of the #10 4-man jam.

Whoever got to see playing time got to keep their number. Maybe Bush has locked down a starting spot?

  • Josh Uche from #10 to #35
  • Nate Johnson from #10 to #25
  • Zach Gentry from #10 to #83
  • Devin Gil from #9 to #36
  • Quinn Nordin from #15 to #3

Wouldn't Johnson/Gentry not matter or even be a separate battle because they're on offense, or can we read this as Bush and the others will factor into special teams, causing a problem

You'd still think that one of Gentry and Johnson would keep it since they're on the other side of the ball, but I guess special teams?

Gentry's change makes sense, since #10 is a holdover from his QB days. And I love Johnson's change, because WRs with numbers in the 20s look cool.

I don't think Uche's and Gil's changes mean much, because those guys aren't going to see the field much this year (if at all) and can compete for whatever number they want next year.

Maybe Nate never wanted #10 but was just handed it and told it would sort itself out. He wore #2 in HS, but Mitchell had that here. Now? Why they wouldn't let Johnson have it I don't know.

But getting #25 means 1 of 2 things:

Dymonte will never play on Special teams, or Johnson won't.

How important has Dymonte been to ST? Would a slighter built guy like Nate have a role there outside of returner?

Dymonte played on ST extensively all through is career. They could be taking him off since he's The Guy at one of the safety spots now, but that was already kind of the case last year. Johnson is a bit small to be on ST outside of returner, so probably he'll be the one to sit out for ST.

Gentry was listed as #83 three weeks ago when the roster came out.  More than one poster noticed it on Twitter and mentioned it in a thread at that time.  I don't know how/why/when the actual change took place, but that post by Seth was August 8th, the first day of camp.  I don't think he was ever going to be 10 this year.

I want you all to remember that we are reading and pondering the significance of an 18 year old child's number change in a game. Then look in the mirror and feel bad about yourself. I know I do...

We've been sending 18 year olds off to war for decades and decades.  They can vote, buy a house, have a real job, and be convicted of crimes which result in a lifetime of incarceration.  The only difference for me between a man and a child at this age is what's between the ears.

I do agree that its just a jersey number in my favorite organized sport.

I'm not saying anyone here is doing this, but some people make such a a deal out of numbers. Specifically when a defensive lineman, for example, wears number ten. People DID fuss when Devin wore ninety-eight. I just don't see why certain numbers should be given to only certain position players. They're just numbers.
