Fun Fact: The character Jimmy Chitwood was based on a former 1954 Indiana Mr. Basketball, Bobby Plump who played on the infamous Milan High School basketball team for which the 1986 film Hoosiers is based upon.

Bobby Plump is also a fun name to say and it makes me laugh.

What a shooter! Was about 16 when he played. When one didn't go in, I couldn't believe it.  I thought to myself - something must be wrong the rim.

I've never been more confident of a shot going down than when Mr. Rice squared up.

This list gets more confusing after every reveal. I expected Glenn Rice to be in the top ten, maybe even top five since...you know, he's the best basketball player in the history of our program.

Cazzie has more hardware (National Player of the year; 2-time first-team All-American; 3 B1G titles; two final fours). Glen's second best for leading UM to its only national title in record-setting fashion.

But both of them are ranked outside the top 10, for some reason, so I guess people like Zoltan Mesko are above them.

I was in high school just down the road from Flint Northwestern when Glen Rice was a star there, and at that time there was so much talent coming out of the flint area. I ran track against Andre Rison, played a scrimmage against Jim Abott

However Glen Rice is one of my all time favorites, and he is a very nice and humble guy in person.

I loved watching him play when I was a kid. Aside from being a great shooter, he had one of the greatest put-back dunks I've ever seen. I think he may have even shot the free throw himself, then dunked it in. Maybe someone else remembers the play I'm thinking of?

Notwithstanding the previous players ranking I think Rice at #13 is about right. One overlooked aspect of his game (and you didn't mention it in the post Harambe) is that Rice led the B1G in rebounding his senior year!

Now he actually WAS "more than a shooter" (sorry Nik)

being especially impressive.  But I think it was his sophomore year he led the league in rebounding (not sure if he was first or second).  He did that when it was crucial that he stepped up that part of his game with young front line players like Hughes and Vaught developing.

I would have thought Rice would end up higher in this poll considering how valuable he was to the 1989 run and really for his entire time at Michigan, but then again this kind of makes me wonder which basketball players did in fact break the top then of this list.

One question I did have for the OP - what was the "n=" on this poll? How many responses did you get, out of curiosity?

As far as basketball is concerned ("top athlete") no one comes close to Chris Webber. People talk about McGary in the 2013 tournament, well Webber was that good his entire Michigan career. Also, blaming Webber and the Fab Five for the downfall of Michigan basketball is a joke. He wasn't the one that sat on his hands while we had the worst facilites in the conference or hire incompetent coaches like Ellerbe and Amaker. Sure the sanctions hurt, but as we've seen with OSU football and Syracuse basketball, if you have the right coach you can weather the storm quickly.

My favorite MICHIGAN BB player and one of the best pure shooters in NCAA/NBA history. That tourney was crazy insane. GLEN should be higher on this list IMO
