Love the rankings as well. Just wish we could see more inclusion of female athletes.

the only better shooter I've ever seen was Jimmy Chitwood.
August 20th, 2016 at 11:44 PM ^
Fun Fact: The character Jimmy Chitwood was based on a former 1954 Indiana Mr. Basketball, Bobby Plump who played on the infamous Milan High School basketball team for which the 1986 film Hoosiers is based upon.
Bobby Plump is also a fun name to say and it makes me laugh.

What made that team infamous?
August 21st, 2016 at 2:40 AM ^
Probably one of the best sports movies in existence being based on them. something along those lines...
August 21st, 2016 at 8:02 AM ^
The team won State as an underdog. Not really in infamy if I recall correctly.
August 21st, 2016 at 8:10 AM ^
I don't think Blau knows the definition of infamous.

Infamous is when your *more* than famous. This team Milan is not just famous, they're *infamous*.
August 21st, 2016 at 9:16 AM ^
For something notorious.

You and I had different childhoods.
August 21st, 2016 at 9:21 AM ^
How does that change the correct definition of the word?
August 21st, 2016 at 9:20 AM ^
Someone doesn't know the definition of "infamous" or "notorious."
August 21st, 2016 at 12:49 PM ^
Is being famous for being notorious.
For example: Bonnie and Clyde

Ok. He should be higher for the simple fact he ran roughshod in the tourney. 1989 title doesn't happen without Rice's shooting and freethrows.

What a shooter! Was about 16 when he played. When one didn't go in, I couldn't believe it. I thought to myself - something must be wrong the rim.
I've never been more confident of a shot going down than when Mr. Rice squared up.

it's insane to see he only got 2nd team AA with those percents and a title.
August 21st, 2016 at 1:10 AM ^
This list gets more confusing after every reveal. I expected Glenn Rice to be in the top ten, maybe even top five since...you know, he's the best basketball player in the history of our program.
August 21st, 2016 at 10:01 AM ^
He's just greasing the wheels for a Nick Sheridan top-5 showing. At this point, it makes sense.
August 21st, 2016 at 12:33 PM ^
Cazzie has more hardware (National Player of the year; 2-time first-team All-American; 3 B1G titles; two final fours). Glen's second best for leading UM to its only national title in record-setting fashion.
But both of them are ranked outside the top 10, for some reason, so I guess people like Zoltan Mesko are above them.
August 21st, 2016 at 2:03 AM ^
he was so money!
I feel like he should be ranked higher as well, certainly top ten but we've had many great athletes at Michigan, Go Blue!

I was in high school just down the road from Flint Northwestern when Glen Rice was a star there, and at that time there was so much talent coming out of the flint area. I ran track against Andre Rison, played a scrimmage against Jim Abott
However Glen Rice is one of my all time favorites, and he is a very nice and humble guy in person.
August 21st, 2016 at 3:44 AM ^
I loved watching him play when I was a kid. Aside from being a great shooter, he had one of the greatest put-back dunks I've ever seen. I think he may have even shot the free throw himself, then dunked it in. Maybe someone else remembers the play I'm thinking of?
August 21st, 2016 at 5:01 AM ^
He was on fire in the tourney.

Notwithstanding the previous players ranking I think Rice at #13 is about right. One overlooked aspect of his game (and you didn't mention it in the post Harambe) is that Rice led the B1G in rebounding his senior year!
Now he actually WAS "more than a shooter" (sorry Nik)
August 21st, 2016 at 12:28 PM ^
being especially impressive. But I think it was his sophomore year he led the league in rebounding (not sure if he was first or second). He did that when it was crucial that he stepped up that part of his game with young front line players like Hughes and Vaught developing.

Damn, those uniforms are slick.
August 21st, 2016 at 8:18 AM ^
I would have thought Rice would end up higher in this poll considering how valuable he was to the 1989 run and really for his entire time at Michigan, but then again this kind of makes me wonder which basketball players did in fact break the top then of this list.
One question I did have for the OP - what was the "n=" on this poll? How many responses did you get, out of curiosity?
August 21st, 2016 at 8:21 AM ^
164 - I asked the same question Friday.

As far as basketball is concerned ("top athlete") no one comes close to Chris Webber. People talk about McGary in the 2013 tournament, well Webber was that good his entire Michigan career. Also, blaming Webber and the Fab Five for the downfall of Michigan basketball is a joke. He wasn't the one that sat on his hands while we had the worst facilites in the conference or hire incompetent coaches like Ellerbe and Amaker. Sure the sanctions hurt, but as we've seen with OSU football and Syracuse basketball, if you have the right coach you can weather the storm quickly.
August 21st, 2016 at 9:14 AM ^
Or that not all of us are old enough to have seen Cazzie play. Hell, I was just a kid when Rice was playing.
August 21st, 2016 at 9:56 AM ^
Me too I'm 31 but I know who Cazzie is and what he was to the university. Maybe it's because I grew up in Pontiac and the Russell family moved here when he went to Michigan.

Dig the list, but no idea how Cazzie and Glen both aren't top 10.
Also, two nits:
1. Dierdorf, not Deirdorf
2. Russell, not Russel
