Camp Randall RV parking/away game experience.

Submitted by Helloheisman on
A group of us are looking into making the road trip to Camp Randall next year. We have done this once before to Penn State and had a great time. Just wondering if anyone has any advice for Wisconsin? Can you stay overnight? Is there anything to be aware of?

So... Saving on snark, next season parking with an RV I think will be tough. Tailgating in Madison is more like bar hopping than tailgating. Unless you plan to literally pop up shop and camp somewhere nearby and drive in for the game? Just make sure you go for some Smut and Eggs before the game. You won't be disappointed by the strange atmosphere and solid greasy breakfast

While I'm tempted to throw out some snark about how far away that game is, I'll refrain.

There's only one lot that allows RVs over by the hospital. They run shuttles to the stadium from there. No overnight parking allowed.

IMO camp Randall was the best big ten venue I traveled to. I went there in 2005 or so for a night game vs Michigan, they beat us 23-20 but that place was hectic that night, Brian Calhoun ran all over us

Game day parking near Camp Randall is atrocious, especially for RVs.   Plan ahead accordingly and try to snag a UW hospital spot.   Just be prepared to leave the premises after the game.

The Camp Randall game day experience is overall very good.   You'll love it.

Been there twice. Best game day environment in the B1G outside of AA IMO. Parking is not good as noted by others but inside stadium is fantastic.

Go.

When I was a student in 1985, some friends and I made a road trip to Iowa City on one day's notice (Iowa #1, Michigan #2). No planning. 500-mile drive, crashed in a dorm with complete strangers, bought tickets from a scalper and, sadly, watched Iowa kick a field goal right in front of us to win. Then drove 500 miles back to Ann Arbor.

Call the parking department for the University. We did that when we went to Lincoln and it worked out great. They actually had spots they rent out for RVs that nobody really knew about in some of their employee lots. Worth a shot.

The UW-Madison has some huge parking lots and (keeping in mind that I haven't lived in Madison for 8+ years so this may be out of date) I am pretty sure they allow game day parking in some of them.

However, the OP should keep in mind that the lots where I suspect they will be allowed to park are a healthy hike from Camp Randall. I think they have shuttles, though.

I'm planning on arriving to Ann Arbor for our 2032 match u with Rutgers (pumped for the big rivalry). I'm going to be on my jet pack - any idea on parking and tailgate? Thanks in advance!

More or less looking into what would be better for the group. We tend to plan these trips a year in advance since everybody has kids and schedules. It almost sounds like we might be better off staying in a hotel.

I was at the Nebraska vs. Wisconsin game in 2011.  I live in Nebraska so I was there with a bunch of Neb fans, but was wearing Maize and Blue.  Wisc fans were very nice to me, but talked a lot of smack to the Neb folks I was with.  I thought going to Camp Randle was one of the top tailgating spots I've ever been.   Take some time to see the town, very beautiful

I was very disappointed. I thought it would be a great place to tailgate but the RV lot we were in had only five RVs in it. We of course made the best of it. We found out in the stadium that they don't tailgate much but all go to the bars. I'll gibe it one more try but this time...no RV. Game experience was very good tho.

@bluestaffah I had the same problem the last 3 seasons with East Lansing, Maryland and Columbus I'm beginning to wonder if RVing to games isn't a big thing outside of Penn State. Did you stay multiple days or drove in game day? I've been leaning towards Wisconsin as opposed to a repeat trip to Happy Valley but if it's like you said I may opt for the latter. Not fun rolling into town on a Friday and you're in an empty lot wondering where the hell everyone else is.
