OT - College Drunk Food
Saw something like this post a few weeks back but... This past weekend, while in Chicago to see The Smoking Popes, I made it out to my college drunk food spot for the first time in 8 years. El Famous Burrito in Summit, IL. Home of the football sized burrito. The prices haven't changed since the early 90's! Its been five days, and I'm still glowing. If you live out that way (there's a few in the Chicagoland area) and haven't been there yet, you need to go! Steak burrito - 4 bucks!

A burrito sounds so good right now. I might have to make the hike from work on central campus to BtB for lunch.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:04 AM ^
Cool story, bro. You should tell it more often.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:20 AM ^
Yesterdog FTW. It's really not that incredible, but it was a fantastic way to end a 21st birthday. Gotta make it back over there sometime soon...
February 24th, 2010 at 12:17 PM ^
That was about to be my comment. It is very very hard to top Yesterdog in the drunk food department. Anyone in GR needs to give it a try.
February 24th, 2010 at 12:45 PM ^
Yesterdog is THE drunk food spot in Grand Rapids. The fact that it's right next to at least two bars doesn't hurt. I may need to swing over there for lunch today.... unfortunately while non drunk...
February 24th, 2010 at 9:00 PM ^
I think Yesterdog is overrated. I had been told they were the "Dog to end all dogs" for the longest time, and when I finally had one...The disappointment train rolled into town. Not much into soggy buns and hot dogs w/no snap to them. It was like a regular cheap hot dog you'd buy in a 8-pack at the store for a $1.25...Maybe I got a bad batch, or Perhaps a noob was working the grill, but I wasn't digging them.
February 24th, 2010 at 9:05 PM ^
It's the sauce and the atmosphere, not the dog itself. To each their own though.
February 24th, 2010 at 1:01 PM ^
Yesterdog was high school drunk food for me. About 3/4 mile from my HS and my parents' house.
February 24th, 2010 at 1:38 PM ^
What were you doing drunk in High School, Hmmm?!? Naughty Boy!
February 24th, 2010 at 4:15 PM ^
Living in East Grand Rapids in the late 1980s. Not much else to do that wasn't more serious or more illegal.
February 24th, 2010 at 1:30 PM ^
Yesterdog is one of the things I miss most about living in Grand Rapids.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:21 AM ^
As far as late night food goes, nothing will ever top Fleetwood for me. I know it's not the best food in the world, and that going in there sober can be downright scary, but it will always be my favorite spot for drunken 3 am meals.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:21 AM ^
I should go to Ida for a Monster Burrito from Carl's Hideaway soon.
Or southern california for Super Mex.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:22 AM ^
They're still around? I remember really liking this song, but that was like '96.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:25 AM ^
Sorry, just had to add a post. That last one put me at 666 points. Nobody neg this one please. Or if someone does, nobody add a point back on.
Shit.
I'm screwed, right?
February 24th, 2010 at 10:28 AM ^
The Devil's number isn't 666, it's 313-223-4055.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:37 AM ^
Is that you ex-girlfriend or ex-wife's phone number?
February 24th, 2010 at 10:39 AM ^
That would be Monsignior Sharpe, no?
February 24th, 2010 at 11:02 AM ^
+1 to you
February 24th, 2010 at 1:17 PM ^
They played it this weekend! It was a great show.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:30 AM ^
there is a place called bubis awesome eats... when i was still living there it was open until 4am on the weekends with the full menu still available... there was nothing better then going there at 2am and ordering up a one pound buger with fires... problem, they love to use a lot of garlic in everything so you're sweating out garlic for the entire day after...
February 24th, 2010 at 10:37 AM ^
im sad that the nypd on south u closed. something about those garlic knots and being drunk just went together
February 24th, 2010 at 1:47 PM ^
But quite possibly the worst pizza in AA
February 24th, 2010 at 10:38 AM ^
Jimmy John's # 5 - the Vito. Though if all my money was spent on booze, the bread they sold for a quarter always worked in a pinch.
February 24th, 2010 at 11:45 AM ^
JJ's Hunter's Club on WW bread with mustard, a pickle and large Coke = awesome;
the "el Gordo" (steak, black beans, guac, pico de gallo AND hot salsa) with a large root beer from Panchero's was good, too;
a personal pie Midnight Special from Pizza House with large pink lemonade was better;
2 "white" slices from NYPD, 1 plain, garlic knots and an iced tea = knocking on heaven's door;
but...an order of bacon cheddar cheese fries from Bell's Pizza was the ultimate college drunk food. The ultimate "drunk" food has to be something you wouldn't order sober, or better yet, you may actually fear the consequences of the food when sober. But when intoxicated, nothing in the world tastes better.
The choice for shear quantity of food consumed by drunk college kids had to be the cheap slices at Backroom or In'n'Out on the way home from the Jug, Rick's, or Mitch's.
The ultimate hangover food: Blimpie Burger quint - fried egg, bacon, cheese, mushrooms and onions.
February 24th, 2010 at 8:55 PM ^
No onions, +sprouts...Best sub ever.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:40 AM ^
When Pancheros was a Mexican fast food place (as opposed to the "fresh" place it turned into), after a case of cheap beer, nothing was better than an El Gordo, chicken with sour cream and guacamole. Tomorrow afternoon be damned!
February 24th, 2010 at 11:08 AM ^
I lost my Gordo-ginity after the 2004 MSU game.
What a great day.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:41 AM ^
is a good drunk food destination especially when you're in South Campus area. You will see athletes frequent there quite a few times at weekend night.
February 24th, 2010 at 11:10 AM ^
I saw Zoltan at Bell's at least a dozen times
February 24th, 2010 at 10:47 AM ^
or Taco Bell always worked for me.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:49 AM ^
Taco Bell is usually my drunk food of choice. This was no exception on Saturday nite after the Mega 80s show at the Intersection in GR.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:50 AM ^
Bells and Pancheros are my drunk food of choice. BTB is dog food now sadly, it use to be great like 6 years ago.
If you are out in Kalamazoo or East Lansing, go to Mennas, amazing food. Kalamazoo also has Sweetwaters donuts which are incredible.
February 24th, 2010 at 11:17 AM ^
and Menna's is very good stuff too.
I was actually in Chicago a few weeks ago, staying with a friend in Wrigleyville, and after a night out drinking on Clark St (I think?), we hopped in a cab at 4 AM and told him to take us to food. We ended up at Burrito House, not sure exactly where it is, but they had some amazing drunk food. I'm convinced ordering in spanish helped
February 24th, 2010 at 11:25 AM ^
BTB got shitty? I lived off that stuff one summer. Come to think of it, that was 6 years ago come June. Dang it.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:56 AM ^
Pancheros FTMFW.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:57 AM ^
This makes me miss Red Hot Lovers. The new place sucks.
When I'm home in NC, nothing beats Cookout.
February 24th, 2010 at 1:46 PM ^
I still dream about the chili cheese waffle fries at Red Hot Lovers. I'm sorry to hear it's gone.
February 24th, 2010 at 11:08 AM ^
The pizza at the In n Out party store on East University. Now, sadly, gone the way of the dodo. I lived on that stuff when I was in East Quad. Don't let anybody tell you Backroom was better, because it wasn't.
February 24th, 2010 at 1:50 PM ^
That was some of the best slice pizza I have ever had! I would say that to everyone and no one would believe me. Although, Backroom was good in the 90s, but now it absolutely sucks. When a slice of pizza is still $1 after 15 years, something in the quality department has to give.
February 24th, 2010 at 4:16 PM ^
I occasionally would get In and Out between classes at the school of ed and honestly thought it was terrible while sober. I don't get the hype.
February 24th, 2010 at 11:11 AM ^
Living in Pittsburgh, nothing beats a Primanti's sandwich for drunk food - fries and cole slaw right on the sandwich.
February 24th, 2010 at 12:16 PM ^
Primanti Bros is on my bucket list...
February 24th, 2010 at 11:16 AM ^
This link should suffice. It's fucking awesome.
February 24th, 2010 at 11:30 AM ^
In Ann Arbor, especially around the South U area it's gotta be Backroom. $1 slices of cheese?! C'mon, I know it's not the best pizza in the world but when you're drunk who the fuck cares!
February 24th, 2010 at 11:49 AM ^
Backroom is terrible. It tastes like bad microwave pizza. In and Out liquor store pizza was way better.
South U Pizza is decent, but Bells is way better and worth the walk.
February 24th, 2010 at 1:51 PM ^
Backroom is great. It was my and my friends' drunk food of choice when I was in college mostly due to the $1 a slice deal. I once went there on a Sunday night, completely sober, because I didn't feel like spending too much money. NEVER AGAIN WILL I MAKE THAT MISTAKE!
February 24th, 2010 at 12:18 PM ^
Its a little expensive but damn them burgers are good when your drunk.
February 24th, 2010 at 8:21 PM ^
But when you're sober, you gotta go to Blimpie
February 24th, 2010 at 12:39 PM ^
I guarantee I've had at least 300 pieces while drunk
