OT: Pokemon Go- have you played it?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on
Although it's nowhere near popular as the original craze back when I was a little kid and hooked like every kid in America, this game is pretty popular. For better or worse, as accidents pile up.

I'm curious to see how many on here have or are actively playing it. I love it because I'm getting some needed exercise while playing.

I caught a Pikachu on I-75 on Saturday. I was in the passenger seat.

no interest, but my 15 year old daughter recently gave in and started.  The library in our town is a drop stop to get stuff you need, so it gets her out of the house and to the library, so it's not all bad.

AND she's promised not to walk into traffic while playing, so that's good...

Yes, I have. Not very much though.

There seem to be HUGE benefits and HUGE downsides from the game.

Benefits: it is getting kids outdoors, getting people to hang out, encouraging shut ins and depressed people to leave their homes, etc. It is turning into a very healthy activity for many people.

Down: Traffic accidents, deaths, and general idiocy.

I have to side with WD here. As an elementary school kid living in Japan when the first games came out in the late 90s, Pokemon consumed almost every second that I wasn't either at school, playing sports, or sleeping.

I've been playing it a lot. I'd say it's been more popular over these past two weeks than Pokemon Red/Blue were at the time if only because it is bringing in nearly everyone below the age of 30 and plenty of people older as well. This is like the Wii which targeted everyone as opposed to the original games which were mostly children. I'm sure it'll drop in popularity over the next couple weeks though.

He had to put it on my iPhone so in that regard, I'm playing with him. From a middleaged father standpoint its not bad because its forcing him to spend to time with me and me with him since he needs my phone and I walk around with him making sure he doesn't walk into traffic. I'm not playing the game exactly but we're talking about it and I'm making him explain to me which way he wants to go on the map using north, south, east and west. I'm also making him tell me where the Pokestops are (the churches and historical landmarks) so he at least has some idea what's around him.

Truthfully, you can't keep the kids from videogames and I'd sooner him be outside doing it than in the house.

What is a Pikachu and is it a big deal to catch one?  Heck I don't even know what Pokeman is. I grew up with the Flintstones, Gilligans Island, Brady Bunch and baseball cards.

Get off my lawn!  Maybe that should be for the colloquialism thread?

I'm playing it as another way of connecting with my daughter.  Otherwise I never would have bothered.  But it's been fun walking around town with her people-watching as everyone plays.  I think it's largely harmless, and the fad will soon pass.

I just downloaded it so I could play with my son.  I am looking forward to wasting time learning about something that came out after my time originally (Pokemon) and now is having a resurgence.  Being cool has nothing to do with it....

You know you're getting old when the thing that you were too old for when it first came out is seeing a resurgence 20 years later
