Denard Robinson Crashes Car Into pond

Submitted by SHEAR WIZARDRY on
Just saw this on the local Jacksonville news. Upon arrival onto scene, the emergency personnel tried alerting him and he was asleep, perhaps unconcious. Link to story I'm sure will be added as story develops...

So as of now, it looks like he wasn't drunk. However, both he and his female passenger apparently were more interested in going back to sleep than escaping a sinking car. Both are apparently physically ok - at least, the story implies so. Not gonna speculate right now. But it's a weird situation for sure.

Exhaust leak into the engine bay and, in turn, into the cabin? CO will make two otherwise unimpared people REALLY sleepy and confused.

Could also be that Denard Robinson learned what a lot of us learned, that 4:22am for a college kid is a great time to leave a party, have a pizza delivered, etc., but staying awake that long gets a lot harder once you hit your mid-20s.

Glad to see it doesn't appear that drugs or alcohol played a role.

and i cant imagine what could have happened for him to end up in the pond. I'm curious to see where this goes. So glad he seems to be okay. Strange to say the least....

Very, VERY strange.

The entire "please let me go back to sleep" thing is more a sign of some form of drug being involved, or possibly carbon monoxide poisoning, than alcohol. So the "determined no need for a DUI" makes sense there. Do have to wonder what a toxicology report woud state, hard to draw conclusions so far.

Also very strange that the passenger was also in the same state. Either they both imbibed the same substance, were both running around at a super hectic pace and actually fell asleep, or were both affected by the same mechanical failure eg monoxide poisoning.

Really hope he's OK and isn't doing something stupid. I have a lot of respect for the guy, don't want that to go south.

According to the report, “The driver tried about three times to open the driver’s door which was the side that was underwater. I had to keep reminding the driver to climb out of the passenger side because his door was in the water.”

Very frightening indeed. Glad to see that he and the passenger were alright by all accounts, but a very odd situation. Hopefully, all is well all around.

Is seems as if he literally passed out in the middle of his left hand turn, and went into the pond. It was on Saturday night. Denard tweets he was tired and shouldn't have been driving.

Crazy story.  Glad he is OK.  Also glad that the gators did not get him in the pond.  Gators never get the better of Wolverines down in Florida.

Just down the board is a thread chock full of us ripping on PSU fans for not be willing to accept the truth.  I love Denard as much as the next guy (providing the next guy isnt Brian Cook) BUT....

Drove into a retaining pond without skid marks

Stayed "asleep or passed out" during rescue

Kept trying to opening driver door that was under water (three times in fact)

And both Denard and passenger were unaware they were in a car that was sinking and refused help initially

I'm sorry but if this story was about ANY other player other than Denard we'd be falling all over ourselves accusing the cops of covering it up and claiming the driver was wasted out of his mind on something.  I can only imagine what we'd be saying if it was an ex-player from OSU or MSU in that condition.

I'm pretty sure we'd not be going with "he was just sleepy that's all"

Caring so much about players from other programs is something myself and other fans gave up long ago.

Perhaps Denard had toked one with the girl and fell asleep... more than 50% of NFL players regularly use cannabis.  So that is a possibility.

I chalk it up to a probable lapse in judgement.... I dont think any less of the man.

Idk man even if he had smoked weed (unless it was laced with something goofy), adrenaline would've snapped him out of his high when he was in the pond. Almost seems like a bad reaction to a muscle relaxer or something, which all NFL players have access too.

Either way glad he's ok.

Dude you're writing your own narrative. I haven't read anything like that in the comments. The gist I got was it could be drugs, or it could be something else, because it's just so bizarre. I have several friends who are smoking fiends, but if this happened to any of them i'd still be second guessing. Either way this is the first any of us have heard of it, and we're just hoping for the best.

I've disagreed with you many times, but tonight, I couldn't agree more. Speculation would be running rampant if this happened to, say, Joey Bosa. But since it's Denard.... However, I am glad no one was seriously hurt, and I am really hoping the people above are correct in that CO2 poisoning is a reason.

Yeah, we should try to be objective about it. One thing is that Denard has had absolutely no personal issues I am aware of in nearly 10 years following him. Start from there. But yes it's weird.

I find the CO theory above compelling, but have no idea how often that happens--seems it would likely be a pretty rare event. Other than that it does sound suspiciously benzodiazepinish, like Xanax or something. Of course, if they determined at the scene that he was not impaired, then I'm not sure we will ever know for sure. Either way, this incident--whatever caused it--could have killed multiple people, so I'm glad they're ok. If there is a longer term problem, I hope Denard fixes it.

I'm not being a "huge asshole" for pointing out Denard's story and the resultant police report would be absolutely HAMMERED here if if were Kirk Cousins, Tyrrell Pryor or just about anybody from an opposing school.  And if you read the comments made before mine I'd like you to point out one of them that even slightly raised doubt that everything was as he claimed,

Want me to name one person who said he was "just sleepy"?

Denard Robinson.   That's the story he's going with.

So he was so drunk or high that he wasn't able to hit the brakes? There were no skid marks so they literally just rolled into the lake. And they wanted to go back to sleep even when they were sinking into a lake. What kind of drink or weed does that? I feel like carbon monoxide poisoning makes more sense here, unless they were both roofied.

I cant see a guy like Denard on any kind of drug. That would just blow my mind if this were the case. I mean if he had some funyuns or doritos sitting on his lap or something that might give it away. Hope he is okay. He is a well rounded young man.

Supposedly, according to John U Bacon, both Denard and Devin Gardner stay away from alcohol nigh-entirely.

I could have sworn I've seen otherwise on South U once upon a time, but *shrug*.

If they stay away from booze, I sincerely doubt they do any of the "harder" stuff. Unless you get any prescription stuff involved, which there's a good chance he's on for any number of athletic reasons.
