One Michigan football game you wish you had been at

Submitted by patol8 on

Choose any game in the history of Michigan Football.

I would go with the 1997 Rose Bowl or 2006 @ ND.

Also, you can trade one game you wish you had not been.

The Horror is an obvious choice.

2001, 2005, and 2009 OSU are strong contenders though.

Maybe even worse: I held the M-club GO BLUE banner for that game. In 4 years I held the banner 4 times and our record for those games was 1-3. Needless to say I didn't hold the banner my senior year even though we ended up going 2-5 at home anyway.

want to be at: 2005 PSU

wish I hadn't been at: 2008 Northwestern. Stayed for that whole thing, coldest I've ever been. Nothing but bragging rights now.

'08 Northwestern was definitely the most miserable game I've ever sat through. I was back in Mich for a wedding Saturday night and they organized a whole bus thing for wedding guests to go back and forth from the hotel in Bloomfield to the game.

There were only 2 couples on the bus, one of whom didn't go to the game. My wife and I were the only people in like the 250 person+ wedding that went to that misery fest.

But I'm glad I did. Go Blue.

As bad as the Northwestern game was, I watched the last ten minutes from center field (3rd or fourth row), right behind our players. It's the closest I've ever been to the players and the field during a game. It was an amazing experience to an otherwise miserable game (and season).

As far as the game I wish I had been at: Wisconsin 2008. It was one of the only games I missed that year, and it turned out to be the best one.

He just kept running and running and running, and at the end of the game, few people in the stands knew exactly how many yards he'd gathered up. When the public address announced the total, the Big House blew up. Definitely memorable. Good call.

You do realize that you would have had to struggle through three and a half quarters of totally inept football before you got to the white meat, right? It was painful.

But GOD was it worth it. As soon as they recovered the onside kick, you could feel half the stadium saying, "wait just a minute here..." and the other half muttering "Oh, Sparty Noooooo..."

BlueintheLou

February 19th, 2010 at 5:46 PM ^

There better not have been 55,000 Sparty's at the Big House.

Wish I was at: Sparty 2004. Sophomore year, was on a rowing trip watching it in a high school cafeteria. Stadium looked like a madhouse.

Glad I wasn't at: OSU 2005. Sold that guy for a chunk. Normally, I would not have sold it, as I attend as many Michigan functions as possible, but I was in an incredibly bad way financially and it helped me out. That game epitomized the year and I would've wanted to cry, as my stomach was ripped out of my throat.

It's not that we were totally inept for all that time. Hart actually was having a monster game. We just kept making drive-killing mistakes. On one play, I remember Braylon needlessly stretching for an extra yard when he already had the first down and fumbling. Thankfully, he made up for it.

Since I was lucky enough to be at the 05 PSU game, I would say the 3 OT game with MSU would be the one I would pick. I watched that game at a house full of Spartan fans that day, so I would say that was just as good! Stupid Spartan fans!

Well, they're two games I really wish I had attended. The first is the 1969 OSU game, probably the biggest upset win in Michigan's history. The second is the 2004 MSU 2004. I sold my ticket to a friend; one of the biggest mistakes of my life.

I wish I was at Penn State 05. Wish I wasn't at Toledo 08 or tOSU this year. It's too bad I have to remember my first tOSU game as the game Forcier threw 4 picks and fumbled once, and a third of the stadium was red. I really thought we were going to win it too. I mean, 40 years ago we were huge underdogs, we were huge underdogs again, we were at home! WHY COULDN'T IT HAVE GONE BY THE SCRIPT?!

MaizeNBlue

February 19th, 2010 at 6:29 PM ^

I hate to say it, but that script that was so overplayed on campus that week really set us up for a harder fall...we had such a good shot at winning that game, and looking back on all of the The Games we've lost recently, we've always been a sliver away from winning...except for 2008 (and 07, but c'mon, Hart and Henne were wrecked).

I still think we could've won in 04 if we hadn't been freak-stopped on our way to Columbus...2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009...those are five games that could've easily gone our way but for a few back breaking mistakes (and usually one glaringly decisive one).

I wish I was at the App. St. game so I could have streaked onto the field right before the last second field goal attempt... it would of caused a delay and given Crable the time needed to realize he wasn't lined up correctly. He then would of made the block when play resumed after I was tackled, cuffed, and taken to jail.

I have only been to 4 Michigan games but only one in the big house. Man I wish I lived in Michigan. It was this year Purdue at home and WTF happened there? I still can't believe we lost that f*in game. But if I had to pick the one that I wish I hadn't gone to it was the year we played TN in the Citrus bowl. If I never hear Rocky Top again in my life I will die a happy man.

The one game that stands out that I wish I had gone to has to be the 3OT Braylon fest. That is one of the most amazing comebacks of all time.

My favorite games that I have attended were the 2001 Washington game and the 100th edition of The Game (2003).

The one I wished I had missed was the 01? Iowa game. 9 hr drive in, cold, rainy day, and a 38-9 beat down. I hated to drive the 9hrs home after that.

I would have loved to have seen one of the ND beat-downs or 07 PSU game.

And while I was at the Horror, I wouldn't trade it. It is a badge of honor. I watched my beloved alma mater lose to a Division 1-AA school, and I came back for more. I've watched them go 8-16 in the last 2 years, and I keep coming back for more. We have thinned the ranks of the uncommitted fans, which will make the success of future years that much sweeter.

The '07 Ohio State game, however, you can have. Curse you, Angry Henne Shoulder Nerve Hating God...

I'll expand mine a bit.

Game I wish I was at: PSU '05.
Game I wish I wasn't at: PSU '09 (At least I got to move down 70 rows at the end).
Game I would not give up: Notre Dame '09.

After graduating in '06, I go to one game a year.

I went to the Oregon debacle in '07 instead of the PSU win.

I went to Illinois '08 game instead of the Wisky comeback game

I went to the WMU game in '09 instead of the ND game the following week.

i think it was washington 02 where brabbs kicked the game winner. just watching the highlights on youtube is awesome.

also, i'd like to go the alternate-universe game where we beat OSU 30-0 in the shoe back in 06 to become undisputed #1

Game I wish I had not been at:

UM at OSU, 2008. After the quick interception to start the game, it was pretty much 60 minutes of pure torture. Brandon Minor was the only player on the Michigan offense that looked worthy of being on the field. To top things off, the weather was cold and miserable.

Games (among many) I wish I attended:

Capital One Bowl on 1/1/2008. It would have been a thrill to watch Lloyd Carr go out the right way in person with a heck of a win.

UM-OSU 1997. #1 UM vs. #3 OSU. Woodson & Boston going at each other. It was one hell of a game and one of the best versions of The Game that has gone in UM's favor in recent memory.

I never turn down a opportunity to go to a Michigan football game. I'll go every year, and I've been to the past two tOSU games. The 2008 game was pure misery, and almost everyone would tell you going into the game we were going to watch a massacre. Despite that, I was still there, which I'm sure you were not.

Good games mentioned already. I'll give a shout to...

Wish I'd been there: Bo's first Rose Bowl win in 1981.

Wish I'd stayed home with my fingers in my ears and my eyes shut, except I had good pizza that night: 1996 Northwestern game.

Between the Colorado Hail Mary and the '05 Minnesota game, I'd have to give back the Minnesota game. Seeing the Gophers running around our field with the jug raised over their heads sickened me.

However, I now have a much greater respect for The Jug because of that...we don't actually own it after all

I'm too young to really remember beating OSU. I have zero memories of beating OSU, even though it has happened a few times in my lifetime.

My first game in attendance. I thought I was going to claw my own eyes out at halftime. God that was the worst half of football that whole season. Watching the second half obviously made up for it.

I would like to have been at the '06 OSU game, in an alternate universe whereby Crable does not hit Smith out of bounds.

I wish I would have skipped the '99 game against Syracuse. "Boy this McNabb guy is pretty good"
