OT: Euro 2016 Day Five

Submitted by Wolverine In Iowa on

Russia v. Slovakia at 8:00am CDT

Romania v. Switzerland at 11:00am CDT

France v. Albania at 2:00pm CDT

The rubber really hits the road here for these teams, as this is the second group match for all six of these teams.  France and Suisse can secure knockout round places with wins.  Russia has been threatened with expulsion from the tournament if Hotel Putingrad's boys cannot control themselves inside the stadium.

I see the first two games ending up as draws, while France dispatches Albania (who I still am having a hard time believing is in this tournament).

Why hating on Albania and why are you having a hard time believing? With 10 players they had more than enough chances to tie the game with Swiss. Plus have you seen other teams play? Some of them seem like they dont even belong in the tournament.

Not hating, just surprised about Albania.  I've already been schooled on how they got in, and they deserve a lot of credit, especially since a team like Holland is absent.  I agree that the caliber of play has been a bit lower than I would expect.  Games like today are where the real class of these teams should be apparent, though.

They are def the underdog and remind me a bit of greece team in 2004 who end up winning the title in the end. But i agree today will show who can really pull it off. The first games are always a bit weird since players and coaches need to become more insync with each other (most of these guys barely play with each other).

The only reason I know what's going on in this tournament is because every game is played on the TVs in my office, but these Russian fans are out of their gotdam minds.

It's not exactly an original observation, but the Russian idiots sure are making the upcoming WC in Russia seem like something to watch on TV.  The Putinization of that country already was discouraging many from attending, but if it's downright unsafe to attend and pull for your team?  No thanks.

And with the next one in Qatar - which was a better choice than Burkina-Fasu and a worse choice than virtually everywhere else - it's going to be a while before I'm inclined to see the WC live.

I'll be there. Will end up costing about $6K. Best bet as a U.S. supporter to link up with the English while out at the pubs. This World Cup won't be for the face-painted, scarf wearing supporter. US always brings the second highest allocation to World Cups. There will be strength in numbers and if we should join up with the English and Australians to defend ourselves.

That Russian world Cup is going to be fun................

Also fuck yeah Iceland. Read up on their 15 year youth development plan, it's awesome and paying off big right now.

Thanks, WII. I meant to start a thread yesterday and then Work Happened (what a drag).

I worry for Lille if Slovakia score a few more. Hamsik is a beast!
