OT: What High School did you go to? And how were they in Sports?

Submitted by M-Wolverine on

I've seen some school trash talk going on in some threads over the last few weeks, and now that signing day is done, and it's things are slowing down again, I thought I'd see-

For those that want to reveal that much info about themselves, where did you go to school, was the Football team good? (Or great, if in a State other than Michigan that we'd recognize it). Who were your rivals? Any great memories? Or were you a basketball school? Or just not good at sports and such.

Me? Dearborn Fordson Tractors, great football, great tradition, winner for years and years, and origin of our newest preferred walk-on (Which is the thread this all got started for me...though I've seen more trash talk just recently). Only a handful of schools sport a better winning percentage, even fewer at the same level. Even less if you take the Catholic schools out of it (*cough*cough* recruiting*ahem*). But yeah, that's the limit of my smack talk.

How about you? What were you before you were a Michigan Man (or woman)?

We were pretty good in a couple non-revenue sports. I played basketball and baseball. The baseball team won the Diamond Classic and should have won districts my senior year. The Soccer team won districts my senior year and basketball made a run after Blanchard finally graduated from Pioneer a couple years after me. Tennis always did well at state's.

Gull Lake High School (Richland, MI just east of K'zoo) class of '93. My senior year I was part of a 1-8 football season. Our only win was against Otsego, and against South Haven our kicker missed a last second FG that would of won the game.
A 2-7 season would of made all the difference...

Now, it is in the playoffs almost every year, and loses in the first round of the playoffs every time. I think the overall record in the playoffs is somewhere around 0-10 in the last 20 years.

Gull Lake represent! I graduated in '05, and it seemed like it was always St. Joe in the first round of the playoffs we lost too. We just had a guy a year or two below me get a D-1 scholarship to MSU. Some people I talked to said it was the first guy to go to a D-1 from GLHS, but I don't honestly know.

My shoulders are still sore from playing Three Rivers for 4 years. I honestly think the combined score in 4 Three Rivers' games was 25-127.

But 6 of that 27 was one of my punt returns. So, I got that going for me.

True story: My mother (class of '66 - first class of Gull Lake) was the one who came up with Blue Devils as the nickname).

The "religious" sect in my day wanted to change the name to Seamen. The Gull Lake Seamen. After the students came up with "The Seamen break through the Trojan line" (Plainwell Trojans) the sect quickly decided that "Sea Gulls" would be a much better name. Sin prevailed... still Blue Devils.

Hello, I was fortunate enough to go to Centerville High School in Centerville, OH. Class of 92. You many know some folks that went there KIRK HERBSTREIT, MIKE NUGENT, AJ HAWK. I believe the CHS High School Football Coach has a kid on the MUCKEYES right now. Must be a MUCKEYE pipeline. Great academics and very good athletics at good ol' CHS. Home of the mighty Elks!

Hilarious story, AJ HAWK and I passed each other in a grocery store with no one else in the aisle. I had my Michigan Hoody on. I bet he is used to people salivating at the sight of him. I didn't say a word to that MUCKEYE scum. IT WAS PRICELESS! He must of been in town for Mother's Day weekend.

Winner of 2 recent state championships in football (2005, 2008)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayzata_High_School#State_Championships

Most notable alumni would be Marion Barber III of the Dallas Cowboys, his brother Dom Barber of the Houston Texans, and James Laurinaitis of the St. Louis Rams (and of course, former Buckeye). We also have pro wrestler Daivari, if you're into that stuff

I believe that he lived in Wayzata but graduated from Minnetonka High School. I know that his brother Chris played in Minnetonka. Unfortunately, we lost the state championship in 2004 to Chris Joppru and Minnetonka (our biggest rival). He had a huge game against us. Luckily for us, we came back and won it the next year against Cretin-Durham Hall, Seantrel Henderson's high school

Berrien Springs HS in Michigan, graduated in 06. We were consistently good in baseball, winning the state championship my senior year, and we were consistently pretty decent in track.

Basketball and football were really up and down. The basketball team made it to the state championship my senior year, but were only good-to-average my first three years. From what I hear, they are doing great this year and could potentially go pretty far.

Football was pretty much the same. We were knocked out early in the playoffs two different years while I was there, and we weren't even close the other two years. This past season, the team made a pretty decent run in the playoffs, but lost. So we were good every once in awhile, certainly not a consistent power-house.

Performing/Fine Arts school, so our best sports were women's gymnastics, hand ball, and we were NYC Women's Soccer Champs!

More notably, facebook keeps recommending I friend Al Pacino since we both went to the same school, along with Jennifer Aniston, Adrian Grenier, and a few other notable celebs.

EGR has accumulated 114 state championships in 15 sports. Plus, an EGR grad from the year after me wrote the American Pie screenplay. Championships are mostly class B, BB, or division 3. Older stuff is often C-D or B-C-D for non-major sports, sometimes lower peninsula only.

Not known as a hotbed of athletic talent. Only major D-1 talent I know of is/was Aric Morris, sadly he went to State. I think the school's biggest known celeb (not even sports related sadly) is Booger from Revenge of the Nerds.

Wrestling was pretty decent in the mid to late 90s, that is about all I can vouch for.

Class of '99, man, I can't believe how long ago that was.

I went to Lansing Everett High School. Terrible in football, except for a couple of years recently where they were halfway decent. More of a basketball school, though. Both the men and women won the state title in 2004. The most notable grads, unfortunately, were both spartans; Magic Johnson and Goran Suton. They have also sent a few players to Oakland University recently, including one of their captains, Derrick Nelson.

CC-same one as Mike Martin. We also sent Conover, Griffin (the long snapper from 2 years ago), and a couple other guys. Lloyd Carr's son went to CC. We won football and cross country state championships this year. Our hockey and wrestling teams both have really good chances at winning state championships too. We have the #5 soccer player in the country too.

Belding High School class of 2003. Belding has a football tradition but lately they suck.

94-state champs
95,96-State runner-ups
97-state champs
98-state runner ups

After that it became very mediocre. 2002 we went 6-4 and lost in the 1st round of the playoffs to Reed City. 2003 we also went 6-4 and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Corunna.

Our Mens basketball team sucks and always has. Our Womens are actually fairly decent.

Wrestling has been good previously. A few of our wrestlers have won state.

Baseball was horrible and then good, and then horrible again. I was a varsity pitcher all 4 years and my freshman year we went 1-21, sophomore year 10-15, Junior year 18-11, Senior year 18-10. Softball has been competitive but nothing special.

Representing Detroit Public Schools!

While I missed the 2004 undefeated state champion boys basketball team with Malik and Joe (two Mickey D's All Americans!), we won a Class B state championship in 2006 over E. Grand Rapids and one Kelvin Grady with current Oregon senior Tajuan Porter at the helm. Girls won a state title in 2005. Both basketball teams are perennial city championship contenders, with the girls having a little more success as of late. The firing of Mark White for hitting a player really hurt the program. Paul Williams, Dayton G, is the last good boys bball player we produced. Ricky Paulding - one time Piston - went to Renaissance.

Football team sucks, but has - as everyone knows by now - produced Carson Butler and Andre Criswell for Michigan (thank us later for the St. Patrick's Day Nerd Massacre) and Chris Norman, Dana Dixon, and Mylan Hicks for MSU. Derek Knight at WVU went to Renaissance, and Ishmael Thomas, an Indiana signee. Home of Lawrence Thomas. NFLer Ron Bartell went to Renaissance.

The only other program that competes on a statewide scale is girl's track and field, and jesus do they compete. Won 10 state championships from 1998-2007 under Rick Miotke. Powerhouse.

The other programs almost all compete on a yearly basis for city championships, but really can't compete with the suburban schools in sports like tennis, soccer, and baseball. Girls softball and volleyball are powerhouses in the PSL. Boys swimming has won a few city championships in a row.

In my four years I played varsity baseball, soccer, swimming, and tennis. Good times.
