OT: What High School did you go to? And how were they in Sports?
I've seen some school trash talk going on in some threads over the last few weeks, and now that signing day is done, and it's things are slowing down again, I thought I'd see-
For those that want to reveal that much info about themselves, where did you go to school, was the Football team good? (Or great, if in a State other than Michigan that we'd recognize it). Who were your rivals? Any great memories? Or were you a basketball school? Or just not good at sports and such.
Me? Dearborn Fordson Tractors, great football, great tradition, winner for years and years, and origin of our newest preferred walk-on (Which is the thread this all got started for me...though I've seen more trash talk just recently). Only a handful of schools sport a better winning percentage, even fewer at the same level. Even less if you take the Catholic schools out of it (*cough*cough* recruiting*ahem*). But yeah, that's the limit of my smack talk.
How about you? What were you before you were a Michigan Man (or woman)?
February 18th, 2010 at 3:41 PM ^
I believe I was at that RHS GHS game in 2002. That was easily the best team Rockford has ever put together and is our only basketball state title team. I guess if it's any consolation, you lost to the championship team. We had quite a few close wins in that playoff run. Could've gone either way.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:26 PM ^
You got your years mixed up. They won the state title in 04. In 02 they should have but got beat the game after they beat us. Forest Hill Central put a beating on them with the twin towers. Visser who went to Wake Forest and played all four years and Murphy who went to Michigan to play TE but never saw the field.
I almost got into a scrum with RHS PG who was a asshole. He went to CSU and then ended up at WMU. Rumor always was that Majerle lost out on the Grady's and then went and plucked that kid from Ottawa Hills. Shady Shady... Not sure how true that was but rumor had it.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:36 PM ^
Forgot what year it was that we won it. We had a two to three year stretch where we were good at basketball. Not so much anymore, but we are still decent. Not sure how much longer Majerle will be able to keep coaching/teaching with his Parkinson's. What year was this RHS pg that you got in a scrum with?
February 18th, 2010 at 3:41 PM ^
Do you know the Nelsons? Or Schink?
February 18th, 2010 at 4:31 PM ^
Tom if you are talking to me, yes I know the Nelsons. We had one on our bball team in 01. I also know a Shink. He was on the bball team in 00.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:30 PM ^
Im a 2003 Belding grad. Nice to see bitter rivals can agree on a love of Michigan!
February 18th, 2010 at 4:33 PM ^
Yup we do have some common ground there. I never once in my life lost to Belding basketball. Most of them blow outs. 8th grade was 78 to 9..lol Football was 2-2 for me. Things have turned a bit in football I see? I don't pay attention to much.. Other then checking scores.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:44 PM ^
Yeah my graduating class was the team that beat greenville by a combined score of 89-8 in my 2 years on varsity. After we graduated our sports went downhill fast. We lost of all of our size up front.
One of the nicest and most sportsmanlike behavior I ever witnessed was after the 03 football game in Greenville after we had won 41-0 a defensive lineman who I went against all night ran across the entire field to say great game and congratulations. Thats what a rivalry is about, I have never forgotten that. I respect you guys a lot because of that.
Well that and because after graduating high school rivalries should mean nothing haha.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:38 PM ^
Flushing High School, which sucks at sports. But, we were next to Grand Blanc and Powers, which both have fielded some good football and basketball teams. I played b-ball against Mark Ingram, actually.
Edit: We did/do have a kick-ass marching band, we've been top 10 in the state for the past 30-some years, and won National Championships a few times.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:44 PM ^
We were and have been horrible in Football since the 70's ended
I was there from 96-99 and We actually did tie for the conference championship in football once and won the West Divisoin of our conference once..
I actually got to play against Charlie Bell, J Rich, Stu S in basketball... Went 1-2 in those games..(One guess on who we actually beat)
Now, Clio moved down to an easier league and still gets dominated in everything except Girls softball and golf!
February 18th, 2010 at 7:00 PM ^
CL-10 was usually pretty good in Baseball, Golf and Synchronized Swimming.....
February 18th, 2010 at 6:56 PM ^
Flushing smoked Flint SW in Quiz Bowl my Senior Year. The Raiders had decent Football/Baseball Teams and sent a few Baseball Players to smaller colleges.
February 19th, 2010 at 7:28 AM ^
I went to three high schools* including Grand Blanc, and probably passed a freshman Mark Ingram in the hallways as a senior, but I don't recall him. I do remember Zack Gibson signing to Rutgers, and track star Geena Gall committing to Michigan on signing day. Grand Blanc is home of Warwick Hills, formerly host to the Buick Open, so they were naturally very good at golf.
*I moved around MI a lot. I went to Clarkston HS and Rochester HS, also. When I was at Rochester they won the soccer state championship, and I believe they took cheerleading very seriously there as well.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:35 PM ^
Yes our band was amazing too my friend. In the top 10 in the country and the second best drumline in the world. Don't believe me look it up because I am not joking. I was damn proud to be apart of it.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:47 PM ^
National champs one of those years, can't remember which, but they played in front of President Reagan.
What is up with schools with bad football teams, always having good bands? That's a real head scratcher there.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:54 PM ^
My high school was actually fairly new. It was established in 1997 so it's kind of old but not really. It's first football victory was against my brother and sister's high school, Northland. Darby hasn't really excelled in football a great deal. My senior year they won their division and had a 12-0 season going into the playoffs and lost to those fucking Dublin Shamrocks. Best football year in Darby's history. Now if you want to talk about a great high school football program talk to our big brother Hilliard Davidson. They just won another title last year.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:54 PM ^
our, I wanna say 23 now? State championships. And our ¿3? losses in state in the last like 25 years, most of which weren't even close. And our 3 national championships, all since 1990, and our 3 regional titles (yah, much more of a 2nd half band and regionals were always early in the year). Also, I believe we have something like 23 national finals appearances too. Forgive the bragging, but proud is right :-)
EDIT: Reading above, we didn't go to the same high school. But our drumline was, maybe not second, but top 5 (too lazy to look it up) in the world once in the last couple years and top 10 nationals is us a lot as well. Sorry 'bout that :-(
February 18th, 2010 at 3:35 PM ^
Had our ups and downs but usually at least made the play offs in football and basketball but had pretty dang good CC and Track programs - especially the women. My senior year the girls came home w/ 3 state titles in track.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:38 PM ^
Ok at football and basketball........had Duane Young on the football team by freshman year, who went on to MSU at played for Chargers back in the 90's.
Derek Jeter was there at the same time also, you may have heard he's ok at baseball......I think the team was ok, but nothing great.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:38 PM ^
Yeah, Rockford is my school. Most people know they have a great football team with multiple recent State Titles, and most wrestling followers know that we have a solid wrestling program, as well. Pretty solid at most sports due to the large amount of students and great coaching. Biggest football players from RHS include Joe Staley and Bryan Anderson. Both went to CMU. We have had a few championship wrestling teams in recent years along with football. It's not common to see football players from Rockford go to D-1 schools, but Stefanski is going to EMU, and the kicker is going to CMU. We send a lot of guys to Grand Valley. Most people hate us, whether that is because of supposed arrogance (a legit argument for some athletes) or a hate due to jealousy or something along those lines. Not always a big fan of Rockford myself, but I definitely root on their sports. It's definitely a good school, but it is definitely overcrowded. For those who hate us, you may be able to look forward to a splitting up of the school into two schools because of the size, but that may be a good couple years away, if it even happens. I wouldn't be surprised if I was negged for being from Rockford.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:32 PM ^
I am also a Rockford guy...what year?
February 18th, 2010 at 5:54 PM ^
RHS here as well. GO RAMS!
Graduated (barely) in 2002. Ah, glory days.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:27 PM ^
Yeah your kicker this year was amazing. Had a boot. Would always kick through the endzone when we played them. I thought Stefanski was kind of over rated though. Everybody was in awe over him. but I don't think that he was that good. I guess that is just what I saw.
February 18th, 2010 at 11:02 PM ^
He's ranked 10th in the country right now, as a redshirt freshman, and beat out defending NCAA runner up Mike Miller for his spot in the lineup. Kyle Waldo is somewhere, I think Indiana, but I'm not sure how good he's gonna be. He almost lost to Pizzo in the finals last year, and Pizzo probably won't see the mat at Michigan.
February 19th, 2010 at 12:28 AM ^
Kyle Waldo is at Nebraska currently. (He also used to go to Grandville)
/Bitter
February 18th, 2010 at 3:40 PM ^
Decent at football. Michigan fans might recognize it because Doug Dutch went there. He was much more productive in High School than he was at M.
Always great basketball. Ranked #4 in the country my senior year.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:13 PM ^
Who won the God Cup this year?
February 18th, 2010 at 5:18 PM ^
But I'm confident in our ability to beat you in pretty much everything else
February 18th, 2010 at 3:40 PM ^
Back in my day we were solid in football and basketball - girls and boys. Class B/BB when I was there before they changed to numbered divisions. They've not been too good in boys bball since Kool left town. I just heard the other day that football is getting weaker and weaker - like having trouble fielding a team of 25. Dang kids these days don't want to come out and play on the gridiron I'm told. 4 or so state championships in bball in Class C, B, and Div 4 in the 60's, 80's and late 90's and early 00's. 1 football state championship and a runner up in Div 4 in late 90's or early 00's. I believe a football runner up in Class C and a Class B in the '80's as well.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:47 PM ^
I was there 2002-2006, and during that time we won at least one football and basketball state championship. I played 8th grade basketball with Kool (I was the only third stringer on a team of 11, hah.), so I guess that's my claim to fame. My brother played basketball the four years before I got there as well.
I think our women's golf team did very well this year, as they had at least one D1-caliber player (Meteorologist Terri DeBoer's daughter).
February 18th, 2010 at 3:50 PM ^
he is dating my best friends sister, we all went out to the bar had a good time, nice guy
February 18th, 2010 at 3:51 PM ^
Weren't the Boogarts on some good golf teams, too? That might have been around your time.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:17 PM ^
Could be. I don't think there were any in my class, but it sounds familiar.
February 19th, 2010 at 2:33 AM ^
Yeah, all the Boogards have graduated now. I think the youngest was a senior when I was a freshman ('03-'04). They're good golfers. Their dad is a nice guy, too. He owns The Pines on Byron Center, which up until my senior year was South's home course. FTR I played on the golf team and they go to my church, just in case you were wondering why I have all this crazy info about this stuff.
February 19th, 2010 at 8:47 AM ^
I used to go to church with them which was why I asked BlockM about them. That was when they were in grade school, though. They don't still go to Providence, do they? Ha, I knew something didn't look right about the spelling I had for them. Seeing you spell it like a normal human being would makes it so obvious now.
February 18th, 2010 at 7:29 PM ^
Do you think football has gone downhill because Blacqueire retired?
February 19th, 2010 at 2:35 AM ^
Nah, they were on the downward trend before he retired. I think it has more to do with the school getting smaller.
February 19th, 2010 at 8:53 AM ^
was my favorite coach of the 3 I had there between freshman, JV, and V. He was good coach but go.blue is right. I talked to Coach Z four or five years ago and he got all choked up telling me about how it was getting to be a struggle to even get kids to come out. Pretty sad seeing as how they're only a few years removed from a state runner up and championship. Not to mention perennially deep playoff runs since the mid 90's. I was hoping Tam would have had some better luck his first year.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:40 PM ^
We haven't produced anyone notable for ages, as our football program has been in the toilet for quite a while. Claims to fame:
Butch Woolfolk
Dave Brown
Steve Cheek
Otherwise, just a bunch of swimmers and golfers.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:40 PM ^
Home of Kirk Gibson, Jim Miller, and Pat LaFontaine.
Our football team made the playoffs once while I was there and got stomped in the first game. They also started a season 6-0 but had to forfeit all their games after a transfer from Pontiac Northern was found to be in his 9th semester (he was outed by his old coach after Kettering beat Northern that year).
The rest of men's sports were nothing more than mediocre. The women did win a state title in softball while I was there, though.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:41 PM ^
I went to Walled Lake Western. We were really good at football in the late 90's but have since been just mediocre.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:46 PM ^
walled lake western beat Stevenson in the state title game in 96 i was 11, my brother was a junior at the time. Went to the game at the silverdome
February 18th, 2010 at 3:47 PM ^
Forest Hills Northern '04
Basketball: pretty good not great
Football: bad bad bad
Baseball: bad bad bad (I played so I would definitly know)
Wrestling: very good
Volleyball: very good
Tennis: very good
Golf: very good
Soccer: pretty good
We were good at country club sports mainly.
February 18th, 2010 at 3:53 PM ^
Back in the 80's and 90's you guys had some good football teams. That whole Northern/Eastern split dicked you hard. You used to be our huuuuge rivals.
February 18th, 2010 at 4:33 PM ^
We were good back then. I think we just got caught up in the Wing T and people figured out our football team ran like 4 plays. 36 run,36 pass, 27 run, 27 pass. And the passing was like twice a game. By the time I started watching our team we just sucked. Where did you go? Was it the OK gold conference?
February 18th, 2010 at 4:37 PM ^
Belding grad of 2003 here. Yeah Irv Sigler syndrome haha He had you guys going pretty good there for a while though.
February 19th, 2010 at 1:16 AM ^
haha oh Belding. You were our big rival for a while. We made shirts for our games with you every year, and every year we got beat by you lol...I still have one from 98'
February 19th, 2010 at 1:33 AM ^
I went to FHN too, but give us a little football love. I graduated in 2002, and both my years on varsity (and at least one year before) we made the playoffs. No big playoff runs, but until Sigler retired, we were a consistent playoff team and the only teams that beat us were Lowell and East. Actually, my Jr year was the year before Grady, and we beat EGR 28-14 - the first year Stursma(sp) was the coach.
We also won a couple team state track titles in division 2 in the early 2000's. One of the top hurdlers in the Big Ten went to FHN, as did Mike Sadler, the punter we passed on who signed with MSU.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:45 PM ^
South Christian '95. Yeah, that Wing T was the balls...in the 80's. We'd play you guys and both teams would be middle trap, middle trap, pass to the TE on the flag or the TE coming across on the drag, punt. I think they re-aligned the OK conferences a year or two after I left and FHN went to the White and Belding came to the Gold and became the big rival. Nowadays I have no idea who they play anymore.
February 18th, 2010 at 6:10 PM ^
I was on the other side at Forest Hills Central, class of '05.
Football: Awful.
Basketball: Good to very good, depending on the year.
Tennis: Very good, then mediocre.
Other Country Club Sports: Hell if I know.
Soccer: Very very very good.
