Likely Attrition: Butler, Horn, McGuffie (Again) Comment Count

Brian

So, the football bust was last night and word has spread that a few players weren't present: Carson Butler, Avery Horn, and Sam McGuffie. This is obviously a sign they won't be around next year. Some brief words on their status.

A couple sources suggested Butler was the guy who Rodriguez mentioned had not been present at the first team meeting after the season. Supposedly he was part of that flareup on the sidelines in the Ohio State game and challenged Rodriguez to an honor du-el or threatened to St. Valentines Day Nerd Massacre him or something. That sounds farfetched but I've heard the exact same story from two different sources. Butler was already hanging by a thread under Carr and quickly found himself in Rodriguez's doghouse for, you know, never blocking anyone.

Personal opinion on his departure: extremely likely.

Horn got to return like one kickoff the whole year even when two or three of the running backs in front of him were out. The writing is on the wall; I haven't heard anything specific on his status but a playing time transfer (Fresno State?) would make a lot of sense.

McGuffie. Hey, this electrical socket seems fun to stick my hand into. Ouch. Let's do it again!

So, yeah: yesterday Tom got a couple of independent reports that McGuffie was out again, and then came this bust thing. I think he's gone this time, and also expect him to change his mind fifteen minutes after this post goes up.

-----------------

If that's the whole flood of transfers—and these remain unconfirmed—Michigan got off easy. Other than McGuffie, the guys leaving (Babb, Chambers, Horn, Butler) were noncontributors. Babb and Butler did play a bit, but not well, and it was clear the staff was looking for better options.

Chambers was a potential contributor at safety or linebacker and his departure does thin the ranks at an already thin position, and McGuffie showed potential before his concussions.

.....but I wonder if because of the concussions, Sam is looking at a medical redshirt year......as such, his interest in transferring revives. Just a thought, with nothing but speculation to back it up. I worry about him given the multiple concussions. Hoe he gets healthy and becomes a productive football player whichever uniform he may wear. I also worry about my comrade Dex now that Carson could be off the team.

insert the typical, classy, "Best of luck to you all in all your endeavors. We love you with unfailing love because you played for michigan, even if you did challenge your head coach to enter the thunderdome" but also, the honor du-el pretty much debunks my "Richrod is a great motivator because he got Carson Butler to swich positions for the team" theory. meh. i will always remember carson speeding down the field against fla (on the sweet action that lloyd had been building up HIS ENTIRE CAREER for that play) and sam pinballing off defenders (and offenders) on the wet field at ND and babb's totally random circus catch at ND and chambers flailing his arms wildly (comicly) while chasing the utah back out of the flats (sorry, artis, that's all i can remember of you) and avery horn's sweet run on the mgoblue spring practice video. good luck.

Seems I was completely right about the Carson Butler situation, even though half the site scoffed at it when I brought it up a couple weeks back. BYAAAAAAH!

It sounds like his family is at least semi-dysfunctional (based on the brother care story), he's up here on the tundra, he keeps getting concussed, and he's a shy kid who has all this dragged all over the newspapers and Internet. I'd like to think things could all work out well for him here, not just for the football but the fact Michigan is a good network in lots of ways. I really sincerely hope the best for him.

Wasn't Butler potentially added depth at DE? That might be a thin area next year (Please stay #55, Mr. MVP), so I wouldn't say Butler is totally a non contributor. If that is it for transfers though, hallelujah!

Hate to act like a gossiping housewife but what is the Butler story?? Isn't that is what the internet is for?? Let's hear the(alleged blow by blow). Not sure why Brian doesn't just post it as.. "this is rumor but...." This isn't 60 minutes... Seems like a lot of juicy stories are alluded to but never fully explained so that we can comment or blow bullet holes thru.

I'd like to see Sam stay at Michigan but possibly take a redshirt so he can get his health in order and also use next year to spend the necessary time taking care of his family issues, then return the year after that. I feel bad for the kid because he came in with so much fanfare and had such high expectations already placed on him, then to take a few concussions and have all these off field family issues fall on his shoulders, all while trying to survive your first semester at college...man, that's tough. No one at that age should have to go through that much pressure. I hope the staff and his teammates are doing whatever they can to help him out, but if ultimately he decides to leave I wish him nothing but the best and hope everything works out for him in the end.
