OT: Worst national sports commentator?

Submitted by Eye of the Tiger on

I usually think it's Skip Bayliss, but I heard Jason Whitlock on the radio today--claiming that Art Briles shouldn't be fired because "it's his job to stand up for the players--and now I think it might be Whitlock.

Stephen A. Smith is another "top-quality" candidate.

Who do you think is the absolute worst?

The airwaves are devoid of talent.

I consider Tirico one of the best, there's no one left at ESPN worth a damn. The Fox crews are a joke between Buck, and Chris Meyers and the rest of their announce staff, it's pretty pathetic. Al Michaels is living off of the Miracle still, though the best job he ever did was during the 89 earthquake.

Some people may have a scale as to how much a commentator sucks but with me its grades on a pass/fail and almost all of them fail.

I disagree with you about Buck, but that will happen.

But you lost me with Michaels, one of the great announcers of all time. You could even argue that he's not your cup of tea, but the idea that he's "living off the Miracle" is beyond absurd.

Well, Craig James tweeted this today...

So I think he might get grandfathered in after years of his bullshit.

has not impressed since his return to Detroit.  He does really odd things, he will start to whisper certain things for seemingly no reason, he fake laughs to the extent that I can't tell if he is really trying to sell it or whether it is self parody.  He is truly a very confusion radio personality to listen to.

I know not everyone likes Gus, but I think he's fun. I like enthusiasm. Always liked Musberger for the same reason.

I'm very high on Tirico and Herbie, and Dave Flemming is a rising star. Always professional, always prepared. Herbie had his Les Miles fiasco, but he's been very good for a long time. Jalen Rose has become really good too.

Baseball probably has more great announcers than any other sport IMO - lots of games, lots of time to fill, so you'd better be good. Vin Scully, Ernie Harwall, John Miller - that's as good as sports announcing gets.

Skip, Whitlock, Stephen A., Berman are at the top. For those that happen to listen to CBS Radio, Brandon Tierney sucks too.

Joe Buck - he just grates on me.  Too smarmy.

Chris Berman - I literally cannot take listening to him any longer.

Forgot another - Doug Flutie is pretty terrible (I don't even know if he is still in the business . . .)

It sounds like during the telecast Dan Hicks is beating off to a picture of Tiger Woods when he's not even in the fucking tournament.

Also, I really miss Keith Jackson.
