Hockey-izing. Michigan takes on Michigan State in a home-and-home this weekend and desperately needs a sweep to keep on any sort of pace for the NCAA tournament. Fortunately, Michigan State looks far more obliging this year when it comes to that sort of thing:

MSU is 10th place in the CCHA with an overall record of 4-9-3 and a conference record of 2-6-2-2. They haven't won a game since Halloween night when they beat WMU 3-1. Since then they lost seven in a row, bookended by two ties. Before exploding for four goals in a 4-4 tie against Minnesota, the Spartans had scored 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 goal in their last seven games. It's like they're starting Billy Sauer in net every night. They've scored more than 2 goals just three times this season.

Hogan will play Friday and if things go well is expected to get the start Saturday.

If you're interested in going to Munn, there are huge numbers of tickets still available. I will be in attendance.

Looking a little farther down the road than this weekend: Matt Rust and Aaron Palushaj have been selected to the USA World Junior Championship team and will miss the GLI. Michigan takes on Tech in the first round and either State or North Dakota in the second. Also, Steve Kampfer's return looks to be sooner than anyone expected:

Junior defenseman Steve Kampfer is back skating with the team and could return by the Great Lakes Invitational according to The Wolverine.  Kampfer had said a few weeks ago that he was about a month from being full strength and that any decision to return to the team was in the hands of head coach Red Berenson.

That would put his return in early January, which would be great. Given Michigan's scoring struggles it also might mean a return of Chris Summers to forward.

Scapegoatin'? People have been muttering about a potential change at defensive coordinator ever since Justin Siller turned Michigan's secondary into Swiss cheese, and this might be an indication the mutterings have some validity:

Miami (OH): We hear that Michigan defensive coordinator Scott Shafer is interested in the Miami (OH) head coaching position.

That's from "Football Scoop," which is a website I've never heard of and may not be credible. I tend to give any site that reports on the fate of schools from Michigan to Eureka College the benefit of the doubt.

There have been some rumors—nothing solid—suggesting that Shafer was not likely to be back next year; this could be a symptom of that. For the record, I remain ambivalent about a potential change.

Rick Leach. No one in associated with the program has been more publicly supportive of Rich Rodriguez than Rick Leach, and here's another example:

“I’ll make you a promise before I go,” he said. “My promise to you is, I know that day’s coming. Maybe you had your fun and got your pound of flesh out of Michigan after 33 years. I don’t care if it’s Mark Dantonio, Charlie Weis or - you better believe it - Jim Tressel. Your freakin’ day is coming.”

This will draw immediate comparisons to Charlie Weis' statement last year that people should "have their fun now" (or, if you're Syracuse, in the future) but here it's a loose cannon ex-quarterback and not, like, the freakin' head coach.

Not a good week for Michigan State receivers. Remember Charles Rogers? Yeah:

Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Charles Rogers is being held in the Oakland County Jail on $100,000 bond for a probation violation.

Jail records show the 28-year-old Rogers has been locked up since Wednesday.

I still think Plaxico wins.

It's really hard to know what to make of him. I generally buy into the "it's not like the guy forgot how to coach" line of logic that would suggest that something other than him was the main problem. He did have - and I really don't mean to bash the young men - some truly horrid safety play in terms of taking angels and not letting guys get past you. The offense was (obviously) bad and it left the D on the field way too much. That said, the unit seemed to regress from the previous year. It is worth noting that Shafer didn't have Crable running around making a ton of plays in the backfield (and failing to keep contain). The defense was also adjusting to a new system and, at times, had to play a true freshman CB in Cissoko. I'm inclined to think Shafer is probably a pretty good coach, though not a brilliant X's and O's guy, and I'd like to see him stick around.

yeah he is a brillant x and o guy... but anyway, not having two of the better safties michigan has had in the past 10 years probably had a lot more to do with the defensive slide this year, than anything else... the biggest problem michigan defense had this year was the big play's... not having very good safties has a little bit to do with preventing big plays..

Does that mean that Plaxico wins for the most idiotic receiver? If so, there is no doubt there. But if you're thinking Plaxico wins his impending prosecution, don't hold your breath. Plaxico is going to the slammer for quite a while.

Brians original resume of Schaefer impressed me. Sure the d was garbage, but 1 season is not anywhere near enough to tell for doubters. For those so inclined let's look at English.. 06-Top D in country.....07 get smoked by App St Oregon...08-Give up 49 in 1 half to a mediocre O like Rutgers. Maybe players have something to do with it cause non of that adds up. Bo Pelini gave up 65pts this year so he's no genius now. Tenuta couldn't stop Syracuse so he's a bum. Only Muschamp is a geniu.....whoops got smoked by Tex Tx so it leaves Pete Carroll...whoops he has 9 NFL players on D and he got gashed by an average OSU offense. I hope Schafer stays and we start shredding offenses with sacks, if Rod gets rid of him it must be a stylistic or personal clash amongst the D staf that was kind of cobbled together from different places like an All Star team. they may not have been on the same page.

There's no need to be sarcastic. Like I said, the safeties didn't make a lot of "play's." The defense against Purdue seemed to suggest an inability to adjust. Maybe, though, you just can't do that with a bunch of 20-year-olds. Anyway, like I also said, I'd like to see him stick around.

Im quite sure i wasnt trying to be sarcastic, i was merely responding to something that i thought had been settled long ago when it comes to x and o knowledge... you said.. I'm inclined to think Shafer is probably a pretty good coach, though not a brilliant X's and O's guy, and I'd like to see him stick around. -Erik and i was merely saying shafer is about has good of an x and o guy as there is in the country.. if anything this season can be blamned on him, maybe it was that he tried to adjust TOO much, and tried TOO many different things.... once again i appologize for comming across as being sarcastic..

4-20-01 DETROIT _ Rick Leach, a former Michigan quarterback and Tigers utility player, was ticketed in Detroit for soliciting an undercover Wayne County Sheriff's deputy posing as a prostitute, police said Friday. Leach, who lives in Farmington Hills, "requested a sexual encounter and was willing to pay $100 for it," Wayne County Sheriff Robert Ficano said. The incident occurred about 3 p.m. Thursday on Michigan Avenue near Wesson, Ficano said. The female officer was a member of the Sheriff's morality unit assigned after police had received several complaints of prostitution in the area, he said. Leach, 44, was ticketed for offering to engage a prostitute. Thursday's arrest was not his first run-in with the law, Local 4 reported. Leach was reported missing from the Toronto Blue Jays, in 1987. He later reappeared and said he'd had an argument with his wife. Two years later, with the Texas Rangers, Leach disappeared again. That time, he was cited for marijuana possession. The league ordered him to undergo drug treatment. Ficano said that Leach was completely cooperative during his arrest Thursday. Leach had his vehicle impounded. He is due in court May 1. MSU should get Plaxico and Rogers to speak at their football events!
